Extractions: addend A number that is added in an addition problem. addition The process of combining two or more numbers to find their sum. Addition is used to find the result of putting together items in a group, or parts in a whole. Addition is indicated by the plus sign (+). Addition is the opposite of subtraction. arithmetic A branch of mathematics that involves combining numbers by addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. borrowing In subtraction, to take one (unit of ten) from a digit in the minuend to add as ten to the digit with the next lower place value in the minuend. Done when the number in the minuend is smaller than the number in the corresponding place in the subtrahend. carrying To move numbers from a given place value, or column, to the next greater place value. When the results of addition or multiplication are a number greater than 9, the number is regrouped this way. The ones are put in place, and the other values are carried to the next column. commutative property In addition, the order of addends does not change the sum (2+4 = 4+2). In multiplication, the order of factors being multiplied does not change the product (2X4 = 4X2). (See order property)

I plan to show you the different parts of an equation, and how to pick them out of a problem. First: mx This looks really strange right? Yes, of course it looks odd to untrained eye. But really this helps us with many equations we use in our daily lives. The mx part of the equation is the slope of the equation, or the ratio of movement (rise over run) Second: b Another one? Yes, another one. The b part of the equation is the y-intercept, or the point where the line crosses the y-axis. Easy? Of course.

Extractions: Felix Savart (1791 - 1841) improved upon the ideas of Daniel Bernoulli (1700 - 1782) and Ernst Florens Fredrich Chlandni (1756 - 1827) and developed a logarithmic interval term called the Savart. There are 303.03 Savarts are in one octave, or doubling of the frequency. This scheme works out very well when talking about musical notes, because it is completely ratiometric, and works the same for low frequencies through high frequencies. Later, Alexander John Ellis (1814 - 1890) developed another similar concept, the cent. In Alexander's scheme the octave would be broken down into 1200 cents, making each equal tempered half tone equal to exactly 100 cents.

In Math Terms, Pi Is Not A Delicacy, Nor A Greek Letter Take the Math Quiz. In math terms, pi is not a delicacy, nor a greek letter.Heather Rae Bingham Staff Writer. 11+x=2x? Looks simple enough. http://orion.csuchico.edu/Pages/vol40issue12/d.3.Math.html
Extractions: Staff Writer 11+x=2x? Looks simple enough. But solving for "x" was one of the questions that gave some Chico State University students trouble while taking The Orion's basic math survey. Out of 50 surveys taken, 32 students correctly solved for x in the former example. The question students missed most often was a word problem involving distance, rate and time. Only 14 students got that question correct. The Orion's unscientific math survey consisted of ten basic math questions taken from the Graduate Record Examination, the test needed to get into grad school. The questions were easy, basic, elementary - so The Orion thought. Most questions received only a 60 percent passing score. The highest score was question five, "What is the square root of 81?" Five college students still got that one wrong. Knowing that answer probably isn't going to be the factor in getting that high-paying job. But if you had a plane to catch in Sacramento you would need to figure out how long it would take to travel there and get to the airport in time. It seems as though only the 14 students who answered the time/rate question correctly would make their flight. Former California State University Chancellor Barry Munitz wrote in a letter that accompanies the registration packet for the Entry Level Mathematics Test (ELM) that all students need certain math skills to succeed in college courses. This test is apparently important to the CSU system because the ELM score determines whether or not a student may register for a general education math course without taking prerequisites.
