Book Description
Learn how to harness the power of delta-sigma data converters

Understanding Delta-Sigma Data Converters brings readers a clear understanding of the principles of delta-sigma (ΔΣ) converter operation—analog to digital and digital to analog. It introduces the best computer-aided analysis and design techniques available. With an understanding of the great versatility of the ΔΣ converter, readers can apply their new knowledge to a wide variety of applications, including digital telephony, digital audio, wireless and wired communications, medical electronics, and industrial and scientific instrumentation. The authors make the material accessible to all design engineers by focusing on developing an understanding of the physical operation rather than getting mired in complex mathematical treatments and derivations.

Written for entry-level readers, the publication has a natural flow that begins with basic concepts, enabling the readers to develop a solid foundation for the book's more complex material. The text, therefore, starts with a general introduction to the ΔΣ converter, including a brief historical overview to place it in context. Next, the publication introduces the first-order ΔΣ modulator, covering oversampling, noise-shaping, decimation filtering and other key concepts. Then, using the first-order modulator as a foundation, second and higher-order modulators are presented and analyzed. Finally, the authors delve into implementation considerations and present several design examples using the Delta-Sigma Toolbox.

Everything needed to facilitate quick comprehension and help readers apply their newly learned principles is provided:Simplified methods to understand complicated concepts such as spectral estimation and switched noiseReferences that lead to in-depth analysis of specialized topicsFigures and charts that illustrate complex design issuesConclusion section at the end of each chapter that highlights the key pointsReference manual for the Delta-Sigma Toolbox, along with numerous practical examples that illustrate the use of the Toolbox

This is essential reading for all design engineers who want to learn and fully harness the powerful capabilities of ΔΣ data converters. Upper-level undergraduates and graduate students will find the book's logical organization and clear style, coupled with numerous practical examples, a great entry into the field. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars grade B
This is certainly one of the best book written on delta-sigmas but a good book on the subject has yet to be written.
There is a chapter dedicated to design examples which is quite good. Multi-bit versus single bit, high order versus low order modulators gets good coverage. The weakness is the organisation of similar information dispersed in several chapters. The authors tried to avoid an overly mathematical style of writting but one wishes a little less hand waving. Many pages of text could have been replaced by simple and unequivocal mathematical derivations. I found the page layout is below average and exposition of ideas and concepts too superficial. This book would have been ok if it was reasonably priced given the average quality of its content but it is twice what it should be.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Univied, Consistent Approach
Much of the recent literature on digital signal processing has concentrated on the digital aspects of the task. The result is a surplus of books on the digital signal processing chips and programming techniques.

In the real world you have a signal and you need it digitized, or you have some digital data and you need a real life signal that you can send out somewhere. The real world refuses to become digital, its analog.

The literature on how to do this aspect has been sparse. And most of what does exist is in the form of a book by many authors. Their different writing style, different assumptions on the background of the readers and the inevitable disconnects between chapters make a consistent flow impossible.

In this book Dr. Temes, a professor at Oregon State brings a solid theoretical background to the writing. Dr. Schreier, a senior design engineer at Analog Devices brings an understanding of what is possible today. Both men have a wealth of experience in the subject and an ability to convey their experience and knowledge to the reader. ... Read more

Book Description

This book is the first graduate-level textbook presenting a comprehensive treatment of Data Converters. The advancement of digital electronics urged the availability of a still missing support for teaching and self-learning analog-digital interfaces at many levels: the specification, the conversion methods and architectures, the circuit design and the testing.

This book, after the necessary study of the background theoretical elements, covers aspects and provide elements for a deep and comprehensive knowledge. The breath and the level of details of topics is enhanced by introductory material in each chapter and the use of many examples, most of them in the form of computer behavioral simulations. The examples and the end-of-chapter problems help in understanding and favor self-practice using tools that are effective for training and for design activity.

Data Converters is a textbook that is also essential for engineering professionals as it was written for responding to a shortage of organically organized material on the topic. The book assumes a solid background in analog and digital circuits as well as a working knowledge of simulation tools for circuit and behavioral analysis. A background on statistical analysis is also helpful, though not strictly necessary.

Coverage of all the basic elements essential for a clear understanding of sampling, quantization, noise in sampled-data systems and mathematical tools for sampled-data linear systems

Comprehensive definition of the parameters used to specify data converters and necessary for understanding product data sheets

Coverage of all the architectures used in Nyquist-rate data converters and detailed study of features, limits and design techniques

Detailed study of oversampled and Sigma-Delta converters with simulation examples and use of spectra and histograms for a clear understanding of features and limit if the noise shaping

4-0 out of 5 stars A true must have for bus nuts!
Anyone who is serious about converting a bus or is even interested should have this book in their library.
I expected a basic "how to" book that would skim over the important topics but that one would be 'Beginners Guide To Converted Coaches' by Larry Plachno which I also recommend for initial reading. When you really get more serious and want to learn about the different systems and what is involved then this book is a must and earns it's claim as a bible!
There are precious few books and useful articles on this hobby but the only reason that I didn't feel that this merited 5 stars was because some of the drawings, schematics and diagrams were a little small to really read and scrutinize. Maybe a few more pages in the book and larger diagrams next time?
Whether you are a complete novice or fairly adept, when you are getting serious about a conversion you really should start here and then move on to 'Bus Wiring for Bus Nuts' and 'Plumbing for Bus nuts' by the same author.
There are other books by Mr Galey as well but I have yet to read them.

5-0 out of 5 stars For all bus converters.
This book is is a great source of information for creating your own motorhome.Covers topics from raising the roof, plumbing, wiring to interior layouts, etc.Factual information will help you plan and build your motorhome.Plenty of photographs and diagrams. This book will help any would be bus converter.

Product Description
Analog-to-digital (A/D) and digital-to-analog (D/A) converters provide the link between the analog world of transducers and the digital world of signal processing, computing, digital data collection, data storage on magnetic material or optical disks and data processing systems. Practical converters must use standard digital CMOS technology without requiring special processing options or processing steps. Scaling of digital technology into the submicron range results in a reduction of the supply voltage into the 1 V range and below. Designs in this field require special circuit techniques to solve this problem. Examples and practical designs will be discussed in this book.

CMOS Integrated Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog Converters describes in depth converter specifications like Effective Number of Bits (ENOB), Spurious Free Dynamic Range (SFDR), Integral Non-Linearity (INL), Differential Non-Linearity (DNL) and sampling clock jitter requirements. Relations between these specifications and practical issues like matching of components and offset parameters of differential pairs are derived.

CMOS Integrated Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog Converters describes the requirements of input and signal reconstruction filtering in case a converter is applied into a signal processing system.

CMOS Integrated Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog Converters describes design details of high-speed A/D and D/A converters, high-resolution A/D and D/A converters, sample-and-hold amplifiers, voltage and current references, noise-shaping converters and sigma-delta converters, technology parameters and matching performance, comparators and limitations of comparators and finally testing of converters.

CMOS Integrated Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog Converters is the second edition of the most comprehensive book available on this subject. It contains an extensive bibliography and an index to all subjects.

CMOS Integrated Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog Converters describes in an innovative manner the small signal stability of noise-shaping 1-bit and multi-bit coders and sigma-delta converters.

CMOS Integrated Analog-to-Digital and Digital-to-Analog Converters is an ideal book for use in advanced courses and is an essential reference for researchers and practicing system and circuit designers in this field.

1-0 out of 5 stars incomprehensible
The book covers different Data Converter architectures. The coverage by itself is not sufficient to undertake a data converter design rather it should be treated as a starting point. However, this is not why I am giving this book a "one star". The book is almost incomprehensible. Sentence structures are awkward and confusing. Sometimes, I wonder even a good editor could salvage this book. Bottom line, the author is well known circuit designer and you may extract some useful information if you are willing to read each paragraph at least twice. ... Read more

Book Description
Systematic Design of Sigma-Delta Analog-to-Digital Converters describes the issues related to the sigma-delta analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) design in a systematic manner: from the top level of abstraction represented by the filters defining signal and noise transfer functions (STF, NTF), passing through the architecture level where topology-related performance is calculated and simulated, and finally down to parameters of circuit elements like resistors, capacitors, and amplifier transconductances used in individual integrators. The systematic approach allows the evaluation of different loop filters (order, aggressiveness, discrete-time or continuous-time implementation) with quantizers varying in resolution. Topologies explored range from simple single loops to multiple cascaded loops with complex structures including more feedbacks and feedforwards. For differential circuits, with switched-capacitor integrators for discrete-time (DT) loop filters and active-RC for continuous-time (CT) ones, the passive integrator components are calculated and the power consumption is estimated, based on top-level requirements like harmonic distortion and noise budget.
This unified, systematic approach to choosing the best sigma-delta ADC implementation for a given design target yields an interesting solution for a high-resolution, broadband (DSL-like) ADC operated at low oversampling ratio, which is detailed down to transistor-level schematics.
The target audience of Systematic Design of Sigma-Delta Analog-to-Digital Converters are engineers designing sigma-delta ADCs and/or switched-capacitor and continuous-time filters, both beginners and experienced. It is also intended for students/academics involved in sigma-delta and analog CAD research. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive discussion of issues in sigma delta mod.
This is the only book I know of that gives such a thorough discussion on the state of the art in sigma delta modulation, including design tips and insight into the authors' own experiences.A necessity for anyoneconsidering the design of a high-order modulator. It is not an introductorytext, and does assume basic knowledge in signal processing and A/Dconversion in general.

This seems to have been written by experts in the field, FOR experts in the field.Takes a highly mathematical approach to the subject, the supporting text seems to only describe the mathematical derivations.Thisbook would probably be fine for academic environments where the need forpractical and 'real world' implementation issues, is unnecessary. Fordesign engineers wishing to explore this field it is unhelpful andfrustrating to read, for as soon as the mathematical analysis is completethe text moves to another subject.Text descriptions (in plain English) ofthe concepts that underpin the principles would be helpful, this is adifficult subject at best, there seems no sense in confounding thesituation further with books like this ! ... Great idea.Wonderful windows and views. My issue is the slide was horrible and construction pitful.I could barely move the piece that slides and it bent and cracked right away.Basically I had to break the unit, shave parts, reglue. Now it works great.Basically good unit with very poor construction quality.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should have one
I'm a big fan of the metric system, and it breaks my heart every day that our country goes without it.However, just because our country uses a less popular system, doesn't mean all of its citizens have to.That's why this converter comes in handy. Thanks to it, I can live my life in liters and meters, while everyone else is bumbling along in gallons and feet.I use it to convert speed limit signs and mile markers (my car's dials are in metric), gas prices (per liter), and when I'm ordering a beverage at the local fast food joint. You should see the looks I get when I accidentally order the 250mL beverage!

I wholeheartedly endorse and recommend this product, and hopefully I can one day add to it.You see, I'm working on my own addition to the metric system, called metric time. Our current 60/24/7/360 is unwieldy and asymmetrical. That's why, under my system, we'd be working with a metric unit of measurement called "beaters".Hours would be "beaters", days would be "kilobeaters", minutes would be "centibeaters", and seconds would be "millibeaters".It's been a challenge to get the math figured out, but I've started using it twice a week to get the hang of it.Hopefully, the world will follow eventually.

Book Description
For the first time in power electronics, this comprehensivetreatment of switch-mode DC/DC converter designs addresses manyanalyticalclosed form equations such as duty cycle prediction, outputregulation, output ripple, control loop-gain, and steady statetime-domain waveform. Each of these equations are given varioustopologists and configurations, including forward, flyback, and boostconverters. Pulse Width Modulated DC/DC Converters begins with adetailed approach to the quiescent operating locus of a power plantunder open-loop. The reader is then led through other supportingcircuits once again in the quiescent condition. These exercisesresult in the close-loop formulations of the subject system, providing designers with the ability to study the sensitivities of asystem against disturbances. With the quiescent conditions wellestablished, the book then guides the reader further into theterritories of system stability where small signal behaviors areexplored. This book provides an essential link between the theory and application of analyzing switching power convertors. The book presents methods and techniques of analysis using modern software tools. Analysis is anessential part of designing high reliability power convertors, and thisbook provides the necessary analytical tools to accomplish the job. A musthave reference for the detailed designer.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book gets to the heart of converter design and analysis
The authur has come up with unique methods of analyzing converters in their close loop form. He presents actual design examples showing both theoretical and measured results for several key topologies. In addition,he discusses filter design, series pass regulators, methods of convertercontrol and finally methods of modeling and simulation. I would highlyrecommend this book as a reference for the advanced designer.

They interface most signal processing devices and are embedded in an ever larger number of integrated circuits used for example in the telecommunications industry, remote control devices, and medical electronic instruments. This book surveys recent progress and gives an account of the working principles of integrated converters. It describes the architectures and discusses accuracy and speed in depth. The suporting web site provides MATLAB programs (in UNIX, PC, and Mac versions) which allow the reader to experiment with some of the concepts explained in the book. The appendix describes how to use the programs in order to simulate converters at the system level; thirteen examples are given to show what is feasible and how to run programs. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book for practicing engineers
I purchased this book a little longer than one year ago, trying to get a better overall understanding of various A/D and D/A.This book did not let me down.

The book provided quite a few implementation examples of A/D and D/A of various architectures. The Matlab code as examples for analyzing the A/D and D/A of various architectures has been very helpful.

The data listed on page 25 about resistor matching are out of date.Modern process technologies can do better than those numbers.

Overall, Paul G.A. Jespers did a good job writing this book.
I would recommend this book to Amazon readers, especially those who are into Matlab scripts for analyzing the behavior of A/D and D/A. ... Read more

Book Description
MACC 2001 is the successor meeting of the first international conference on Materials Aspects in Automotive Catalytic Converters, MACC '97, and concentrates on the high-temperature mechanical and oxidation behaviour of both metal-supported and ceramic-supported automotive catalysts. The metal-supported catalyst is based on a ferritic steel with 5-8% aluminium, 17-22hromium and small additions of reactive elements. More than 20,000,000 units were produced in 1999. The ceramic-supported catalytic converter is based on corderite. The production rate of ceramic-supported catalysts is much higher. Both materials have specific advantages and disadvantages which determine the application for a given car model.
In addition to these two basic groups of catalytic carriers, the scope of the conference also refers to coating aspects, since the influence of the coating composition is becoming more and more important. The car and car-supplying industries report on their future requirements with respect to performance and service life. Maintaining good performance is mandatory particularly in the view of thinner supports and higher temperatures. Service life predictions, based on modelling and simulation techniques, will depend on reliable materials' data. This volume will therefore be invaluable to all scientists and engineers involved in the design and development of automotive catalysts. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
Design of Low-Voltage Low-Power CMOS Delta-Sigma A/DConverters investigates the feasibility of designing Delta-SigmaAnalog to Digital Converters for very low supply voltage (lower than1.5V) and low power operation in standard CMOS processes. The chosentechnique of implementation is the Switched Opamp Technique whichprovides Switched Capacitor operation at low supply voltage withoutthe need to apply voltage multipliers or low VtMOST devices.
A method of implementing the classic single loop and cascadedDelta-Sigma modulator topologies with half delay integrators ispresented. Those topologies are studied in order to find theparameters that maximise the performance in terms of peak SNR. Basedon a linear model, the performance degradations of higher order singleloop and cascaded modulators, compared to a hypothetical idealmodulator, are quantified.
An overview of low voltage Switched Capacitor design techniques, suchas the use of voltage multipliers, low VtMOST devices and the SwitchedOpamp Technique, is given. An in-depth discussion of the presentstatus of the Switched Opamp Technique covers the single-endedOriginal Switched Opamp Technique, the Modified Switched OpampTechnique, which allows lower supply voltage operation, anddifferential implementation including common mode control techniques.
The restrictions imposed on the analog circuits by low supply voltageoperation are investigated. Several low voltage circuit buildingblocks, some of which are new, are discussed. A new low voltage classAB OTA, especially suited for differential Switched Opampapplications, together with a common mode feedback amplifier and acomparator are presented and analyzed.
As part of a systematic top-down design approach, the non-ideal chargetransfer of the Switched Opamp integrator cell is modeled, based uponseveral models of the main opamp non-ideal characteristics. Behavioralsimulations carried out with these models yield the required opampspecifications that ensure that the intended performance is met in animplementation.
A power consumption analysis is performed. The influence of all designparameters, especially the low power supply voltage, is highlighted.Design guidelines towards low power operation are distilled.
Two implementations are presented together with measurement results. The first one is a single-ended implementation of a Delta-Sigma ADCoperating with 1.5V supply voltage and consuming 100 &mgr;W for a 74dB dynamic range in a 3.4 kHz bandwidth. The second implementation isdifferential and operates with 900 mV. It achieves 77 dB dynamic rangein 16 kHz bandwidth and consumes 40 &mgr;W.
Design of Low-Voltage Low-Power CMOS Delta-Sigma A/D Convertersis essential reading for analog design engineers and researchers. ... Read more
