Book Description
This volume of Analog Circuit Design concentrates onthree topics: RF Analog-to-Digital Converters; Sensor and ActuatorInterfaces; Low-Noise Oscillators, PLLs and Synthesizers. The bookcomprises six papers on each topic written by internationallyrecognised experts. These papers are tutorial in nature and togethermake a substantial contribution to improving the design of analogcircuits. The book is divided into three parts:
Part I, RF Analog-to-Digital Converters, the application of digitaltechniques to process analog modulated rf signals in radio receiversrequires high linearity and high-resolution analog-to-digitalconverters. In portable applications these converters must have anextremely low-power consumption to allow a long standby time. Inlow-cost signal processing applications these converters are combinedwith a digital signal processing system onto a single chip. Todaydigital signal processing systems use advanced CMOS technologiesrequiring the analog-to-digital converter to be implemented in thesame (digital) technology. Such an implementation requires specialcircuit techniques. Furthermore the susceptibility of converters toground bounce or digital noise is an important design criterion. Inthis part different converters and conversion techniques are describedthat are optimized for receiver applications.
Part II, Sensor and Actuator Interfaces, interfaces for sensors andactuators shape the gates through which information is acquired fromthe real world into digital information systems, and vice versa. Theinterfaces should include analog signal conditioning,analog-to-digital conversion, digital bus interfaces anddata-acquisition networks. To simplify the use of data-acquisitionsystems additional features should be incorporated, like self-test,and calibration. To make these goals economically feasible, thesefunctions should be integrated, preferably with the sensor, on asingle chip. This part describes the latest techniques in sensor andactuator interface design.
Part III, Low-Noise Oscillators, PLLs and Synthesizers, the phasenoise of the receiver's local oscillator limits the immunity againstinterfering signals. Therefore it has become the most importantspecification of the local oscillators of all integrated transceivers.Frequency synthesizers for digital tuning in portable radios requireextremely low phase noise for the same reason. This part describesdesigns and architectures which give rise to very low phase noise.
Analog Circuit Design is an essential reference source foranalog design engineers and researchers wishing to keep abreast withthe latest developments in the field. The tutorial nature of thecontributions also makes it suitable for use in an advanced course. ... Read more

Book Description
Power converters are at the heart of modern power electronics. From automotive power systems to propulsion for large ships, their use permeates through industrial, commercial, military, and aerospace applications of various scales. Having reached a point of saturation where we are unlikely to see many new and revolutionary technologies, industry now seeks to optimize and standardize the performance of these devices. Power-Switching Converters: Medium and High Power examines the characteristics and operating principles of these systems in terms of how to increase their efficiency and produce them at lower cost. This book begins with an introduction to the field, placing the technology in its business context to highlight the current trends and issues facing the modern power engineer. The remainder of the book provides a detailed examination of three-phase power switching converters, including the various problems and solutions involved in different applications. It discusses high-power semiconductor devices, pulse-width modulation (PWM) principles and algorithms for various implementations, closed-loop current control, component-minimized topologies, power grid interface, parallel and interleaved power converters, and practical aspects such as protection and thermal management.Filling the gap between textbooks and technical papers, Power-Switching Converters: Medium and High Power offers practical solutions to current industrial demands with a focus on the particular business needs of performance quality and cost efficiency. It also serves as an excellent textbook for graduate study. ... Read more

Book Description

In modern systems signal processing is performed in the digital domain. Contrary to analog circuits, digital signal processing offers more robustness, programmability, error correction and storage possibility. The trend to shift the A/D converter towards the input of the system requires A/D converters with more dynamic range and higher sampling speeds. This puts extreme demands on the A/D converter and potentially increases the power consumption.

Calibration Techniques in Nyquist A/D Converters analyses different A/D-converter architectures with an emphasis on the maximum achievable power efficiency. It is shown that in order to achieve high speed and high accuracy at high power efficiency, calibration is required. Calibration reduces the overall power consumption by using the available digital processing capability to relax the demands on critical power hungry analog components. Several calibration techniques are analyzed.

The calibration techniques presented in this book are applicable to other analog-to-digital systems, such as those applied in integrated receivers. Further refinements will allow using analog components with less accuracy, which will then be compensated by digital signal processing. The presented methods allow implementing this without introducing a speed or power penalty.

1-0 out of 5 stars Please look for a better book on this subject
I hate to give a bad review but this book really is so bad that I had to get rid of it and warn others about it. I can not imagine what the author was thinking when he wrote it. It just does not cover the topic well at all and any useful information in it is so poorly organized and written that it is mostly just a useless lump of paper. I think I gave my copy away but I should have thrown it in the trash. I am sorry I spent any of my money on it.

1-0 out of 5 stars Useless
It does not give any practical guides on switching power supply design, it's just an overview of topologies.
Useless

1-0 out of 5 stars A useless book
Book just skims the topics mentioned in its title - just a disordered collection of a bit outdated drawings with childlike commentary. No word about power conversion essentials: topologies, magnetics, feedback, stability, EMI, power semiconductors.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's more like a reference book.
This book presents different circuit configurations and tries to explain what they do theoretically. Definitely not for beginners in electronics. It does not give you an introduction to many things you should know to be able to understand what is explained here. It is good as a reference book.

1-0 out of 5 stars An assortment of data sheets
This is by far the worst book I have bought on the subject of switching regulators. It is in essence a collection of manufacturer datasheets and application notes, thrown together in no particular order... with virtually no reference to feedback design, stability, or considerations for board layout.I guess all of the author's designs work perfectly on paper, but try building one and making it stable! Not a good choice for the beginner, definitely not a good choice for the seasoned designer. ... Read more

Book Description
DC/DC conversion techniques have undergone rapid development in recent decades. With the pioneering work of authors Fang Lin Luo and Hong Ye, DC/DC converters have now been sorted into their six generations, and by a rough count, over 500 different topologies currently exist, with more being developed each year.Advanced DC/DC Converters offers a concise, practical presentation of DC/DC converters, summarizing the spectrum of conversion technologies and presenting many new ideas and more than 100 new topologies. The treatment begins with background material on DC/DC conversion and discussions on voltage lift and super-lift converters. It then proceeds through each generation, including the groundbreaking sixth generation--converters developed by the authors that can be cascaded for high voltage transfer gain.More than 320 figures, 60 tables, and 500 formulae allow you to more easily grasp the overall structure of advanced DC/DC converters, provide fast access to precise data, and help you quickly determine the values of your own circuit components. Nowhere else in the literature are DC/DC converters so logically sorted and systematically introduced. Nowhere else can you find detailed information on prototype topologies that represent a major contribution to modern power engineering. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars An effort not reaching a good result
The book is written with the purpose to be an "up-to-date [source about] DC/DC converters for students and practicing professionals". It is a shame how this target is not reached. Since from the very begin, the introduction, you will face an answer: what is its usefulness? You'll hope that, going on reading, everything will be clearer, and, from a certain point of view, this is what you get: what you've seen in introduction is eventually explained so that it could be useful even to students. However the text neither is "practical" nor gives you the "in-depth-analysis" you were hoping since its title begins with "Advanced". Schematics are rarely useful to understand the following analysis and are often badly sketched/printed. Mathematical derivations are quite good but not enough to fulfill designers needs. Apart from this it is a good effort. In my opinion readers should have to wait the next edition, if there will be a next edition. ... Read more

Book Description
As the trend to system-on-chip solutions gradually consolidates, including an ever-increasing usage of digital signal processing, a concurrent enhancement of the analog front-end performance is required. Moreover, such enhanced performances must be achieved under the constraints imposed by digitally driven technology roadmaps, with low-voltage supplies, poor-performance (and often badly characterized) devices ... and above all the unavoidable presence of noisy digital circuits. It is under the pressure of these challenges that analog designers must sharpen their wits to overcome the problems. Supported by both designers' ingenuity and slow, but precious, improvements of digital CMOS technologies, the results of recent research confirm that solutions can be found.
In consonance with this trend, CMOS Telecom Data Converters compiles the latest achievements regarding the design of high-speed and high-resolution data converters in deep submicron CMOS technologies. The four types of analog-to-digital converter architectures commonly found in this arena are covered, namely sigma-delta, pipeline, folding/interpolating and flash. For all these types, latest achievements regarding the solution of critical architectural and circuital issues are presented, and illustrated through IC prototypes with measured state-of-the-art performances. Some of these prototypes are conceived to be employed at the chipset of newest generation wireline modems (ADSL and ADSL+). Others are intended for wireless transceivers. Besides analog-to-digital converters, the book also covers other functions needed for communication systems, such as digital-to-analog converters, analog filters, programmable gain amplifiers, digital filters, and line drivers.
In addition to case studies on state-of-the-art converters, the book includes overview chapters aimed at presenting the existing knowledge in a structured, comprehensive style. Nyquist converters and sigma-delta converters are covered in such a way. The overview chapters are complemented with chapters devoted to describing basic methodologies and tools needed for designing telecom analog-to-digital converters and capturing designers' expertise for re-usability.
CMOS Telecom Data Converters provides unique information for those interested in designing converters with state-of-the-art performance for the latest generation of communication systems. Since this unique information is embedded in tutorial descriptions, the book can also be used as a valuable reference for non-expert readers willing to learn basic concepts as well as practical recipes for the design of CMOS data converters. ... Book Description

The Analogue-to-digital converter (ADC) is the most pervasive block in electronic systems. With the advent of powerful digital signal processing and digital communication techniques, ADCs are fast becoming critical components for systems performance and flexibility. Knowing accurately all the parameters that characterise their dynamic behaviour is crucial, on one hand to select the most adequate ADC architecture and characteristics for each end application, and on the other hand, to understand how they affect performance bottlenecks in the signal processing chain.

Dynamic Characterisation of Analogue-to-Digital Converters presents a state of the art overview of the methods and procedures employed for characterising ADCs dynamic performance behaviour using sinusoidal stimuli. The three classical methodshistogram, sine wave fitting, and spectral analysisare thoroughly described, and new approaches are proposed to circumvent some of their limitations.

This is a must-have compendium, which can be used by both academics and test professionals to understand the fundamental mathematics underlining the algorithms of ADC testing, and as an handbook to help the engineer in the most important and critical details for their implementation.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book on Sigma-Delta converters, theory and practise
A good book on sigma-delta converters, even though it is a compilation of chapters by different authors. It is obvious that they collaborated, because you really don't get the impression that multiple authors are involved. Theory and practise are discussed to a reasonable depth. Make no mistake though - it would still be difficult to rush off and design a working prototype and expect a spice simulation to agree with theory. The illustrations are good, and the book is well written. I take off a star mainly because it is expensive.

Book Description

One of the main trends of microelectronics is toward design for integrated systems, i.e., system-on-a-chip (SoC) or system-on-silicon (SoS). Due to this development, design techniques for mixed-signal circuits become more important than before. Among other devices, analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters are the two bridges between the analog and the digital worlds. Besides, low-power design technique is one of the main issues for embedded systems, especially for hand-held applications.

Modular Low-Power, High-Speed CMOS Analog-to-Digital Converter for Embedded Systems aims at design techniques for low-power, high-speed analog-to-digital converter processed by the standard CMOS technology. Additionally this book covers physical integration issues of A/D converter integrated in SoC, i.e., substrate crosstalk and reference voltage network design.

Book Description
The Analog to Digital Converters represent one half of the linkbetween the world we live in - analog - and the digitalworld of computers, which can handle the computations required indigital signal processing. These devices are mathematically verycomplex due to their nonlinear behavior and thus fairly difficult toanalyze without the use of simulation tools. High Speed A/DConverters: Understanding Data Converters Through SPICE presentsthe subject from the practising engineer's point of view rather thanfrom the academic's point of view. A practical approach is emphasized.
High Speed A/D Converters: Understanding Data Converters ThroughSPICE is intended as a learning tool by providing building blocksthat can be stacked on top of each other to build higher ordersystems. The book provides a guide to understanding the varioustopologies used in A/D converters by suggesting simple methods for theblocks used in an A/D converter. The converters discussed throughoutthe book constitute a class of devices called undersampled or Nyquistconverters.
The tools used in deriving the results presented are:

  • TopSpice® by Penzar - a mixed mode SPICE simulator- version 5.90. The files included in Appendix A were writtenfor this tool. However, most circuit files need only minor adjustmentsto be used on other SPICE simulators such as PSpice, Hspice, IS_Spiceand Micro-Cap IV;
  • Mathcad 2000 - Professional byMathsoft. This tool is very useful in performing FFT analysis as wellas drawing some of the graphs. Again, the mathcad files are includedto help the user analyze the data.
High Speed A/DConverters: Understanding Data Converters Through SPICE notonly supplies the models for the A/D converters for SPICE program butalso describes the physical reasons for the converter's performance. ... Read more
