1-0 out of 5 stars Run Away!
I used this book (and that CD that came with my edition) as part of a college algebra course that I took to brush up on basic math so I could do well on the GMAT and GRE.

I have a good background in math so didn't find the information very challenging, which is good, as the people in the class who had a less mathematical background struggled with the text and CD all semester.

The book is not all that well organized and still has a lot of politically correct and new math filler for my taste. Most annoyingly, every time a new concept is introduced, the first technique presented is to guess a solution to the problem, and then see if you are correct. I grasp that Martin-Gay is trying to use the concept of reasonableness of answers, unfortunately, most students don't get it.

If you happen to have an edition with a CD-ROM, good luck. I had continuous computer and program errors when I used the program, and in fact my computer (at the time with Windows ME) began crashing regularly after I installed the software (I complained about this constantly to my teacher) which it had never done before. I can't prove the PHIM software did it, but I can't imagine what else it may have been. This edition may not even come with the CD, I can't tell from the description, so you may be safe. I just suggest extreme caution if you ever happen to run any PHIM software.

To sum up here, if you take a course where this is a required text, be ready to ask lots of questions in class, and beware of the software. Better yet, try and get into another section that uses a different book. If you are interested in a basic algebra book for independent study, please buy any other algebra book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars LOVE this book. Probably my favorite from my teaching days.
Great for a variety of levels. This book has some any great activities in each lesson.Graphing, addition, subtraction, money concepts, multiplication etc. As part of each lesson the kids also read color words and color a detailed picture.I really liked how the lessons took each child a good while to complete :-)Not just your boring math worksheet, the kids enjoy working through the lesson and have to focus and refer back to previous pages for needed information. I still use this in homeschooling my own kids.I would highly recommend this to anyone. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb and concise summary of discrete mathematics
I was looking for a book to review discrete mathematics that I had taken 8 years ago using the obtuse Rosen book (Discrete Mathematics and Its Applications). I ordered another book on discrete math and the bookstore sent me both my ordered book and this workbook (I guess to get rid of it). Wow. This book offers a fantastic summary of discrete math, has good sample problems, and has tons of problems for the student to work out (along with answers to all the problems at the end of the workbook). The actual book I ordered is ok. This one, however, is definitely a hidden gem. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars I agree with Debbie L.
Debbie L. is spot-on. This is an absolutely horrible workbook. My wife and I have trouble interpreting the lessons so we can help our kindergartener with his homework - and we're both working professionals with college degrees! If we can't figure it out, how are those little five-year-olds supposed to?

Avoid at all costs.

1-0 out of 5 stars Tell your school district not to use it
Not sure what kind of backgrounds the designers of this curriculum have, but I imagined their purpose is to make math more fun and/or approachable. If that's the case, then it's been poorly executed. The worst part is the online portion of it, which is what would "make or break" this curriculum. The explanations and questions presented are often confusing. Also the only interactive feature "tools 4 math" which allows the user to "write/draw" the answers to the practice questions does not even provide enough tools to perform some of the actions the user is asked to do.There is no way to check if an answer is correct, and there is no record keeping of any kind that the teachers or parents like me can look up on.My child, while he likes to listen to some of the lessons, actually learned very little as far as the actual math concept being taught is concerned. It almost seems to me that he likes it because there's no feedback on whether his answers were right or wrong, therefore he can just sit there and not turn on his brain.Eventually I ended up to be the one teaching. What a waste of time and money, especially when our school district is cutting instruction days and teacher salaries and eliminating programs for financial reasons! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars Not good
I have a CA high school math teaching credential. I've been teaching 20 years, and I believe I'd put this book at or near the bottom of all the high school math texts I've ever seen.

I've gone through the IMP year 4 book. There are virtually no equations given. No sample problems solved. The series relies totally on the teacher to give this information in the classroom, or for the students to "discover it" which makes no sense. A text book is meant to be used as a resource in conjunction with classroom lessons. This book is just a long, ongoing word problem with no practice problems or any other such support for the topic.

Yes, this book is way outside the box. If you want to do well on the SATs and/or ACTs, or expect your students to do anything in college that is science or math oriented (Biology, medicine, engineering, chemistry) do not use this book. It could be used as a supplement to a regular math text book, but that's a lot of $$ for some word problems.

Not good.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best math text available
First of all, let me state that I am a math teacher. I have taught using a variety of math texts and, in my professional opinion, IMP is the best by far. Compared to traditional curricula that teach procedures and algorithms, IMP teaches students how to understand math--not just how to *do* math. The program is problem-based, which allows students to interact with math in a much more authentic context than traditional texts that just require students to manipulate algebraic symbols without really understanding what any of it means. Students who use IMP enjoy taking math, understand how it is relevant to their lives, are more likely to take future math classes, are better able to communicate their ideas, and still score as well or better than peers taking traditional math. In fact, IMP has been identified by the U.S. Department of Education's Mathematics and Science Expert Panel (1999) as an exemplary mathematics program (See The Mathematics Teacher. Oct 2001 Vol.94, Iss. 7; pg. 540 for a detailed review).

For some reason, there are a lot of opponents of IMP and other reform curricula. I believe they feel threatened by a new way of learning math that is different than the way the learned it growing up. When I was in school, I learned traditional math and did well grade-wise. I got excellent grades and eventually majored in mathematics, but I did not really understand a lot of what I learned. I knew how to *do* it extremely well, but I didn't understand how to use it in the real-world. I have learned as much math *teaching* with IMP as I ever did as a math major.

There is a great deal of research on the subject, and I encourage anyone interested to look more into it instead of listening solely to myself or those with opposing opinions.

Product Description
Also featuring: Keith Peters, David Hirmes, Lifaros, Paul Prudence, Pavel Kaluzhny, Ken Jokol

Forget school math class, Flash math is about fun.it's what you do in your spare time - messing around with little ideas until the design takes over and you end up with something beautiful, bizarre, or just downright brilliant.

It's a book of iterative experiments, generative design; a book of inspiration, beautiful enough to leave on the coffee table, but addictive enough to keep by your computer and sneak out while no-one's looking so you can go back to that Flash movie that you were tinkering with 'til 3 o'clock this morning.

In New Masters of Flash the designers told us about themselves and deconstructed their finest effects. Well this time we've gathered the best in one book and simply asked them to go away and do what they do best: play. We give you the code and explain the essence, then you take your inspiration and run with it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great book
Though it's in ActionScript 2.0, this book is very good if you're into creating visualizations via programming (not only ActionScript). It shows the creative and logical process behind the code (I think that's much more important that the code itself). And it's also a beautiful book to add to your collection :-)

And you can also download all the .fla used in the examples.

5-0 out of 5 stars Math and Flash combine to provide interesting animations
This book is stunning visually and is just overflowing with inspiration. This is a book intended to show us what the Flash community has been able to come up in terms of creation and allows us to tinker around with the code. If you like to take a basic principle and see it evolve given enough time and interest, then this is the book for you. If you enjoy seeing "how" things function rather than "why" they work, you have the opportunity to tinker and toy with the variables to see exactly "how" it changes the overall look of the final piece. To get the most from this book the reader is expected to understand the basics of ActionScript as well as the techniques common in most projects. This is not intended to deter the beginner, as you will surely learn much.

The book is laid out pretty straightforward. There are 15 chapters with each one dedicated to a certain individual who goes through each of his creations and iterations.Suggested reading by the people at "Friends of Ed" is to grab the source files, run them, and then read the chapters. Some of the source files are adequately commented so in some, the book isn't even needed. That is not to say, however, that this book is not necessary to understand what's going on. The book gives you quick insight to the authors' mindset and thinking, and each chapter begins with an overview of where they are from, what they do, how they have come to do this, and interests.

There are actually two parts to the book. The second part consists of the last three chapters and has what you'd consider an "application" or an "engine" for viewing the creations and being able to manipulate them directly. The first part of the book is dedicated to finding a variable, which for the most part is explained in the book, changing it to your liking, viewing the results, and reviewing the code. At the end of the book there is a Tangents page which provides 54 links to explore.

In case you are wondering where the math fits in, it's scattered throughout the book. However, sometimes, we are not presented with the reasons for using "128" for variable "p" to multiply by var "b" which has the value of "14". You may often be left scratching your head and asking why, but that isn't the point. Sine and Cosine are presented quite clearly in the first chapter and there is a terrific example from Gabriel Mulzer, but if you are looking to the find the mysteries behind using atan2 to get an angle, then this book will not answer that question. It is up to you to play the part of explorer to find those answers. You are presented with a wealth of methods that people use, inspiration for them, and experiments that the reader is encouraged to break. You are given a chance to use these methods to have fun and use them as springboards to access that creativity that lurks in each and every one of us.

In conclusion, if you enjoy going through code with a fine toothed comb and if you want to pick up valuable techniques for doing certain things with Flash, as well as be dazzled by some of the innovators of our time, get the book. It is the perfect culmination of what Flash ActionScripting can do. I would show the table of contents at this point, but all of the chapters are named after the innovators themselves, and would provide little insight to the contents.

4-0 out of 5 stars actionscript and Math
I appreciate the book and it helps to understand how to create nice animations by using maths.
I think it needs more Classes writing and not only timeline.

4-0 out of 5 stars People, it's called flash math CREATIVITY
The Flash Math books are great. But not if you want an O'Reilly cookbook of answers to your design problems. It's all about inspiration.Being able to look at something and say "wow, that's so beautiful" and either need to make it yourself just on principal, or see that maybe one day you can use the idea yourself on all those practical things you're so worried about. If you get all juiced up creatively from the things you see around you, this is a perfect book. It's 4 instead of 5 because it doesn't come with a CD.But you can go to the website for the book and see things in action.

That probably appealed to the left brain folks.

For the right brain ones among you.No, this will not teach math.No it won't explain much in the math department at all.It does give the code, it allows you to experiment with what Flash will do, it might renew your interest in Flash.Kind of like watching one of the a-lister Flash kids talk at a Flash Forward conference, it might do that more than looking at a Hockney photo collage (both work for me).If you don't work that way, buy it and give it to one of your left brain Flash friends.

It will be great fun for them, they will get to feel like they remember their math and are much better at it now.And it will make pretty things.

5-0 out of 5 stars Some Assembly Required
The book is great.I find the negative reviews puzzling because this book is like a $30 kit for a working spaceship, but you have to weld the wings on yourself.Big deal. What's wanting in so many Flash books are examples of the astonishing things you can do with Flash. This book shows what can be done, then hands you the code on a platter.I guess if you're more the designer type and you want to do great stuff using the math functions in Flash, you, um, er -- need to learn some math. But don't complain that every author hasn't lined up to correct your particular brand of ignorance.Read a book. ...
