5-0 out of 5 stars A Student Pleasing Book
I teach at an urban school where academics typically aren't high on the priority list of most of my students. Using problems from this book, my students enjoy learning Math.I'll post a random problem and left it up to see who can guess it. There have been some interesting guesses before they get to the correct one, but it interesting to see how they come up with their solutions. It definitely makes them think.Worth getting if you are looking for a book to get your students interested in Math.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for teaching logic and thinking skills
Someone once said, "Bad reasoning as well as good reasoning is possible; and this fact is the foundation of the practical side of logic."

The book includes more than 300 math puzzles and critical thinking activities such as word puzzles, Sudoku, analogies, and cryptograms. 4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book to bring on vacation
This is a must bring when you go on vacation and just need some time to chill at the beach or at the end of a busy day, in between day and evening plans. If you happen to be interviewing in the technical fields you may run across interviewers that ask brain teasers. You'll find many of those problemsin this book. For technical interviewing this makes a good study guide. I have collected quite a few puzzle books and was never fully satisfied with any of them until I heard about the authoer and decided to pick up one his books. The puzzles are all differnt from each other, ranging from word problems to geometry problems. The solutions given are very complete and actually take up the largest emphasis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good puzzles book
I didn't expect much from a 5-dollar book, but I was pleasantly surprised. Other reviewers have already covered the quality of the book, so I won't go into those details, but I have the following suggestion for you.

Store this item in your wishlist and use it when you need a filler item to qualify for free shipping.

Highly recommend the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money
While the puzzles are intriguing and thought-provoking, the solutions don't explain how the answers were reached.I was highly disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great bathroom reading!
Very nice.I like the old-fashioned approach (I think the author has been writing books like this since the 1960s) and the problems are interesting and varied; most of them you can do in your head (hence an ideal "bathroom book") but some do make you break out the pencil and paper just to double-check.Highly recommended for interested people who studied Maths to around age 18 or beyond.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good for warming up your brain.

Product Description

Give your brain a workout on the type of brainteasers that challenge the best solvers at the World Puzzle Championships. They're tough, but fun, and the feeling of satisfaction you get when you succeed is simply unbeatable. Some of the puzzles are oldies but goodies, like battleships--and its many variants--where you search for a fleet hidden within a grid. In "Eminent Domain," try to determine which blanks cells are owned by the numbered ones. For "Hex Loops," locate a path that travels through adjacent hexagons: the trick is, it has to end where it started, and the lines can't touch or cross. From Snaky Tiles to Spiral Galaxies, these Mensa-level conundrums will get your mind in shape.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice little hobby
The puzzle are not too difficult but a little challenging at the same time. It is nice as a hobby or to exercise your mind. It's a good buy!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, challenging puzzles
This has challenging puzzles, but their lacking the "fun" and intrigue that some other books contain.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great workout!
A great book for those of you who are preparing for a puzzle competition and are looking for an exercise book (as I was when I bought this one). Despite it is only 96 pages, it has a great variety of puzzles, mostly contest types.

There are around 10 to 20 puzzles of each type, and these are:

- Alternate corners
- Battleships (classic, crowded, hexagonal, minesweeper, numerical, ocean view, semicircular)
- Corral
- Deja Vu
- Dominoes (domino hunt)
- Eminent domain
- End View (like ABCD)
- Fences (including big field fences and pentomino fences)
- Hex Loops
- Lighthouses
- Minesweeper
- Number place
- Nurikabe
- Oxtails
- Clouds
- Skyscrapers (only the 'number of buildings' type)
- Snaky tiles
- Spiral galaxies
- Spokes
- Square Roots
- Tents

The level of difficulty is pretty good, at least for the puzzles I tried.
The only drawback is that most of the puzzles are too small, especially the Fences. I've seen books where the puzzles on the answer pages are bigger than these ones. It's not like they are so small that makes it impossible to work them out, but still pretty small. What I'm doing on other books and will on that one too is to scan the puzzles, cut the white spaces and print them back again on larger sheets. This way you are not ruining your book when drawing and erasing and you can print (and solve) certain pages as many times as you like.

Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Puzzle Book I've Ever Worked!
If you love puzzles, this book is a **must have**! This is hands down the best puzzle book I have ever worked. There is a wide variety of puzzles and they are all unique, not your standard logic problems. Prepare to be challenged, these puzzles are definitely for the puzzle solver at heart! What a great mental workout! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars good fine fun
9-12 years old is just right for this book. Some of the puzzles seem overly simple, but for the most part they were just challenging enough.Throughout the book there are puzzles that have a surprising twist or are satisfyingly tricky, making this book worth a look.

5-0 out of 5 stars fun, thought-provokimg
My grandkids love this book and spend alot of time in it.
A great summertime activity when it's too hot to go outside.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for a precocious 7 year old
Great for my seven-year old grandson who loves puzzles, jokes and riddles. While much in this book is above him at the moment, he will grow into it. And what he can do now, is challenging and completely engaging. He especially liked a puzzle that asked him to find the differences between two drawings. Unlike the usual challenge in this type of exercise, the two drawings were mirror images where he had to distinguish between things on the left reflected as things on the right. He loved it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Jewel of math history!
This book, literally, is one of the best puzzle books ever published in history, capturing the world's greatest, most classic math problems and concepts!
The puzzles range from simple brain-busters to in-depth number theories, so there are puzzles for mathematicians at any age and level.

4-0 out of 5 stars As usual, Gardner rocks
No surprise. If you knew Gardner in the "good times" when he wrote in Scientific American you will have no surprise. Very good book for enjoyment when in a warm afternoon in a hammock.

4-0 out of 5 stars In Soviet Russia, the puzzle solves you
In Soviet Russia, the puzzles are also converted into practical problems involving steel working, railways and Young Pioneers (well, not all). But as with many older books (and also Soviet books), what they gain in a certain charm or obscurity, they lose in clarity or straightforwardness of presentation. So that you could make many problems at least 10-30% easier to decipher just be rewriting the descriptions.

I haven't read that many puzzle books yet, but this is probably my second favorite so far. My favorite is: Professor Stewart's Cabinet of Mathematical Curiosities.

5-0 out of 5 stars Funny, challenging, and well written!
I bought this book while working as a gifted children teacher. I liked it so much that I used to keep it in my car and solve riddles whenever I had to wait for someone. It is a great resource for all teachers; children are suddenly made quiet when you present a puzzle to them.

I especially like the stick puzzles, where you can distribute a number of matches to students (by the way, it works with kids, teenagers and adults alike) and give them a puzzle. The advantage of this kind of puzzle is that you can give additional tasks to those fast-solvers; you do not have a story behind it.

The organization of the book is excellent; it is divided by difficulty levels as well as by type of puzzle. For example, you have different levels of geometry problems and of sticks problems.

Great book!

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
despite of difficulty, I love it because there are various good problems

4-0 out of 5 stars very good book to have fun
This book is upto my expecations. There are very good math puzzles, both educational and entertaining.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good problems for fourth and fifth graders
I recently purchased this book for my children in third and fourth grade and I am glad that I did. The puzzles really challenge them, although some are a bit more than they can handle. While the solutions are given in the book, they are not allowed to look at them until I am completely convinced that they will not get the answer. However, I do give them plenty of clues before that option is exercised.
Some of the problems are classics, for example selecting socks until you have a matching pair and drawing figures without lifting a pencil are problems that I did in grade school many years ago. My favorite problem in this book is the one that is illustrative of the growth of powers. It involves a million sugar cubes each a half inch in width. Making a cube out of them would create a cube approximately four feet wide, a rectangle would cover a tennis court but a stack would be higher than Everest. Since the first involves the cube root of a million and the second the square root, this demonstrates the significance of squares and cubes in a unique and educational way.
This book is an excellent source of mathematical puzzles for students at the level of fourth or fifth grade. While none of them is really new, they are well-suited for children of that age and all three of mine enjoy them greatly, although they do get frustrated.

Product Description

An old favorite--Mensa Math & Logic Puzzles--gets a brand-new look: it's now in color!
And the puzzles are fantastic: they're the kind of challenge found at the World Puzzle Championships, and they require no language to solve. For example, you are given a grid of dots that has some numbers (0, 1, 2, or 3) in them. You need to connect the dots in one continuous path so that each number is surrounded by that many lines. So a "3" means that three of the four sides around it must be connected. All the puzzles are similar abstract exercises, and all have unique solutions that can be reached using pure logic. They're difficult--and really satisfying exercise for your brain.

3-0 out of 5 stars Very Difficult Puzzles
I own both this and the other "blue" book which also has very similar puzzles.

A few of the puzzle types are deterministic in the sense that you can reason to a solution without any backtracking. For example, the Number Place puzzles (variation of Sudoku) are deterministic in the sense that I described.

However, most of the others puzzles appear to be highly non-deterministic. In these puzzles, you can typically reason to part of the solution but then you need to guess at the next step, follow along until you get a contradiction and then backtrack, or continue until the next guess if you don't hit a contradiction. Maybe I am missing something here, but as I say, most of the puzzles are very complex backtracking problems which are better for computer solution. If in fact I am missing something here and the puzzles are deterministic, I would be grateful for some hints.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great value
Excellent book covering wide range of puzzles.

It's much like the blue book (Mensa Challenge Your Brain Math & Logic Puzzles) - same authors, format, number of pages, etc. Only the puzzles are different :)

So, you get around 75 pages of mostly well-known puzzles and 20 pages of answers.
There are typically between 8 and 20 puzzles of each type, although there are some extremes such as End View (30 puzzles) and Kakuro (only 6).

The puzzle types are:

- Alternate corners
- Battleships (classic, lighthouses variant, minesweeper variant)
- Black and White
- Cross Sums (Kakuro)
- Dominoes (Domino Hunt)
- End View (ABCD)
- Fences (Slitherlink)
- Half-Dominoes
- Hex Loops
- Lighthouses
- Minesweeper
- Number Place
- Rain Clouds
- Skyscrapers
- Snaky Tiles
- Spokes
- Square Numbers
- Square Routes
- Tents
- Worms

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Puzzle Collection!
This puzzle book, like the blue Mensa Challenge Your Mind Math & Logic Puzzles, is a FANTASTIC collection of puzzles! You don't need any prior knowledge or skills to succeed with this collection, just brain power and a pencil. They are challenging and lots of fun! There is a wide variety of puzzles in this book - some of the same type as the ones found in the blue book, some new and different ones. These are not your standard logic puzzles; there are no words involved other than the instructions. I REALLY wish Tuller and Rios would come out with a 3rd edition of these!

5-0 out of 5 stars Too short!

5-0 out of 5 stars If you can get your hands on this book, it's a lot of fun!
I love the variety of puzzles in this book. They range in difficulty - my 10-year-old son, myself, and my physics-adoring husband have all been challenged and entertained by the puzzles in this book.

I love that the author says at the beginning of the introduction, "If you really get stuck, don't give up - or you'll spoil the fun. Put the sticky puzzle aside, and perhaps the next day a new line of attack may suddenly strike you. Or you can try to solve an easier puzzle similar to the sticky one. Or again you can guess trial answers just to see if they make sense."

He does give the answers at the back, but he's right; it's much more satisfying to figure it out oneself.

The puzzles are grouped by type; the easier ones at the beginning of the section, gradiently getting more difficult.

This book is really wonderful for children and adults. As a homeschooler, I find this a wonderful tool for challenging myself and my kids. It's a great tool for making math FUN! ... Read more

I have been fascinated with puzzles ever since my teens;which is now over 60 years ago.The term "puzzles" covers such a field, that I was really impressed with this book. When I first started, the first puzzle I came across was "The 15 Puzzle;then later "The Towers of Hanoi".And that was only the start of what became a lifelong interest in searching for new puzzles and books on puzzles.
Although the reason the author set upon writing this book was to explain the association of ,and the mathematics involved ,with puzzles;he also did something else at the same time.He shows what the whole world of Puzzles and Mathetical Recreations is all about by taking what he calls "The Ten Greatest Math Puzzles of All Times",explaining them, then expanding on them to show how so many other puzzles stem from them.I have collected somewhere between 6 and 7 hundred puzzle books over the years, many of which the author references, and I have to say, that this book does as good as any I have ever come across ,in explaining what the whole fascination of "Recreational Mathematics" is all about. It was eye openingyears ago to find good books on this subject, even harder to find puzzles.Jigsaw and Crossword were common, but little else. Then I found Mathematical Games in "Scientific American;"which led me to many other things. Now,with the "Net" the whole world of Puzzles and books of Puzzles and Mathematical Recreationsopens upa pletora of things for the puzzler.
This book has something for everyone, whether it is Riddles,Paradoxes,River-Crossing Puzzles,Map Coloring Problems,Optical Illusions,Mazes,Magic Squares, etc.,a neophyte or someone who has been interested in puzzles for years;will find lots new and interesting here.As an example,I became fascinated with Magic Squares while in University.I learned a method to complete any odd-order Magic Square;but try as I may,I could never "crack" even-order ones.I asked the head of the Math Department if he ever tried. A few days later he handed me notes on how to do it--I was thrilled.I was thrilled once again when in this book ,what did I find but a Magic Cube!!
Although this is an excellent book in all respects and will give anyone interested in puzzles a lot of enjoyment, and there are along with everything else, 72 challenging puzzles with detailed answers, all kinds of related references for further reading, and a good Glossary;there are two things I would like to mention. For many years ,it was believed that Sam Loyd invented the "15 Puzzle";and it is stated so here in 2004.Jerry Slocum and Dic Sonneveld wrote an excellent book,"The 15 Puzzle" in 2006 whichproved that Sam Loyd didn't invent it after all. That just goes to show there's always something new in puzzles. The other comment I have ,is that I'm surprised that the Tanram was not chosen as one of the "greatest". However, with so many to choose from;it's almost like trying to pick the greatest song or the greatest of anything;but I must admit;the authors choice is his perogative ,and as good as any.

4-0 out of 5 stars For a mixed audience
I think this book aims at a mixed audience with mixed success. For the puzzle solver, there is interesting background on some popular forms, but probably not enough puzzles. For someone with a background inmaththe exploration is too simple, (e.g. one paragraph of Godel) and for the computer scientist not enough exploration of algorithms. For the historian of science there are some new perspectives, but the history is not carried through. On the discussion of Labyrinths, I wish Danesi would have mentioned the book Labyrinths by Borge, and also alluded to the form in some churches.

Although the book may not be for the "specialist", there is quite a bit of fun for anyone here. For example I had been familiar with the Fibonacci series, but hadn't seen the Rabbit Puzzle before. Everyone has heard of the Mobius strip, but the Klein bottle was new to me (and I'd love to buy one).I had done mazes before, but the one by Lewis Carroll us fun.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good start, but never becomes really challenging
Liar's Paradox has ten chapters covering 10 puzzles that mankind has created over its history. Each chapter covers a main puzzle, the historical and philosophical background behind it, and describes how each affected mathematics/science as people thought their way through the puzzles. Each chapter includes a set of follow up questions/puzzles, with a good answer section at the back.

One should note that while most of the chapters focus on math, others seem only indirectly related--for instance, one chapter is almost solely devoted to problems related to perception and psychology (such as two-tone pictures in which you can see both a vase and two people's faces), and other chapters are related to math only in extremely advanced ways--for instance, the Liar's Paradox may be a math problem for some, but at the level this book is written it doesn't really get past a discussion of logical paradoxes.

On that note, this book is written at the level of someone who vaguely remembers high school algebra (for instance, there is a fairly in depth discussion of what "exponents" are). For someone at that level, I think the book is excellent. The puzzles Mr. Danesi chooses are interesting and all described well. The puzzles at the end of each chapter are entertaining.

I think readers should recognize before they buy this book that it is probably not meant to be a brain-wracking, headache-inducing puzzle book, but rather a leasurely review of some of mankind's more interesting puzzles.Mr. Danesi has done a good job of accomplishing that. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A fun read
This was a great read. We are introduced to Zach Stone, medically retired from the police and his wife Savannah who creates puzzles for newspapers. Zach, now consultant for the police, is asked to come back to Charlotte to help solve a murder. I liked how the plot was played out as each turn of the page revealed more clues as to the identity of the killer. I had my suspect and enjoyed watching the author put several red herrings to throw me off. A good plot and likable characters made this a fun read.

3-0 out of 5 stars A MYSTERY BY THE NUMBER - #1
Another Tim Myers book. All of his books, regardless of his pen name are good books.Retired Charlotte NC police chief Zach is called back as a consultant on a murder case - the mayor has been receiving death threats and so far, there are 2 murders.Zach's wife, Savannah, creates number puzzles for the newspapers. She has come along on his trip as Zach's assistant.Fast Read.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Little Bit Disappointing
I was looking forward to reading this book, which was billed as "a math puzzle mystery."At first I didn't care for the heroine/narrator Savannah at all; I found her arrogant and with an attitude. As the book progressed and I saw her relationship with her husband, her uncle, and her old friends from Charlotte, I came to like her better.I don't feel we really got to know the suspects all that well, and we learned little or nothing about the first victim. We never learn why these people were targeted.

I did like the twist about Savannah's legacy from her late mother and the revelation that came from it.I have to admit that I was wondering why a 38-year-old woman and her 42-year-old husband, who obviously adored each other, didn't have any kids, especially as her best friend in Charlotte had three. That could be explored in the next book.

My main objection to the book, however, is the total & complete lack of puzzles.Kaye Morgan's Sudoku mysteries always contain several puzzles (with solutions in the back).Other cozy series have recipes for ice cream, cupcakes, etc. This had nothing. At least the grid Savannah used to solve the puzzle could have been shown.I really couldn't visualize it at all.

As it was well written, and as I ended up liking Savannah, it earned three stars.Next time, PLEASE put some actual puzzles into the book.

A Mystery By The Numbers
Berkley Prime Crime Mystery

First in a Brand New Series

Savannah Stone is a math whiz and makes her living creating puzzles that are syndicated daily in many newspapers throughout the United States for others to solve. Her agent constantly pushes her to come up with some of the most difficult puzzles she can.

Zach Stone, her husband, is a retired police chief from Charlotte, North Carolina. When he retired they left the big city behind for a small mini farm in Parson's Valley in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains.Zach's retirement was not his idea, unfortunately he was shot in the line of duty and had to retire for medical reasons. He keeps his hands in on police work by doing consultant work for various police departments in North Carolina and sometimes across the country.

Zach was feeling very unsettled one day putzing around the house trying to keep busy when a call came in from his old department.Savannah told the new chief that Zach was too busy to help him and basically hung up.Savannah is a terrible liar and when she told Zach the call was a "wrong number" he did not believe her at all. She ended up telling him who it really was and after one short phone call they were packed up and in the car headed back to Charlotte.

There was a killer on the loose in Charlotte and the mayor was receiving threatening messages saying he would be the next victim. The mayor was their friend, how could they not go to help.Savannah was basically along for moral support and thought she could catch up with old friends while Zach helped with the police investigation.Little did she know that she would be enlisted to help solve one of the most difficult puzzles of her life, and if she failed to solve the puzzle in time someone else would die.

I LIKED IT!!!!

This was a fun, quick read. The puzzle element was very intriguing and kept the pages turning.I found myself trying to solve the puzzle just like Savannah, of course she figured it out first. These are definitely two characters I want to read more about.I just think it may be strange if every case Zach is called in to consult on involves a puzzle for Savannah, so I am very interested in how the author will continue to have these characters evolve and unfold.I will be patiently awaiting the next book in this numerically inspired series.

5-0 out of 5 stars fascinating amateur sleuth-police procedural
Zach was the Police Chief of Charlotte, North Carolina when he was shot in the chest and forced to retire. He and his wife puzzle creator Savannah Stone moved to Parson's Valley far away from the big urban centers, but police work is part of Zach's DNA makeup so he opens up a consulting firm.

The new Police Chief Davis Rowles, who Zach recommended, asks for his services.Charlotte Mayor Grady Winslow is receiving threatening letters from someone who apparently has killed two people already. When they arrive at the Belmont, they are put up in the swanky suite owned by billionaire Baton Lane. One of the victims worked for him and was a friend so he believes hosting the Stones is his minor contribution to capturing the killer.Savannah's puzzle skills come in handy when letters and pictures come to the police station with a puzzle number on the package; she knows if she finds the key she will locate the psychopath.Zach uses mundane police methods by questioning suspects including Davis and Grady. Both of the Stones arrive at the identification of the killer at the same time, but now Savannah's life is in danger.

Casey Mayes has written a fascinating amateur sleuth-police procedural starring a husband and wife couple who work well together. The pair loves one another and talks to each other sharing notes on their respective inquiry.Character driven with several terrific twists, readers who enjoy mysteries like those of Parnell Hall's Puzzle Lady will enjoy observing the two Stones methodically work separately and together on their first joint case.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended
This is a good book on Sudoku for kids. The book includes 108 puzzles. All the puzzles in the book are simple 4x4 grids. The solutions to all the puzzles are available at the end of the book. There are three categories or levels of difficulty for the puzzles.

The first 22 pages in this book are dedicated for strategy, hints, rules, or tips. All the puzzles in the book are Classic Sudoku (with numbers). There are no Alphabet Sudoku (with letters) or Symbol Sudoku (with shapes and symbols) like the two books "Kindergarten Sudoku" and "Preschool Sudoku". Also, there are no simple 6x6 puzzles like some of the other books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be better
The book is just okay, the fun of Sudoku comes from variety, which is missing in this book. Not saying that it is a bad book, but could have been better, not great value for money, as a more enterprising kid will complete the book in a couple of days, but then it depends on the kid who will do it. One thing to note is that all the puzzles are 4 digits, meaning all sudoku games are with 1,2,3,4 only, the puzzles become more complex and challenging with an uneven set, like 5 or 7 digits. I was expecting the advanced section to have some puzzles like that but it's not, which is why gave the book 3 stars.

To help you decide my son is 7years old just completed 1st grade, he is good in Maths, but no genius, and the book turned out very easy for him. The age rating of 4 to 6 should be more appropriate for this book IMHO.
