3-0 out of 5 stars Good reference
I can't imagine what's not to like about this book. You won't find derivative tables or anything but you will find explanations and formulas for almost any math you'll need in daily life. I especially like the book because it gives explanations and concepts that lie behind the numbers and formulas. For example, in the money section you'll find the standard formulas but you'll also find hints about investment strategies (mathematically based) and hints for reading stock tables. A great reference book.

4-0 out of 5 stars dandy book
This a very helpful book. I know a home-skooler wacko who distrusts government but trusts this volume enough it is the main textbook in maths for her 6 year old. I claim responsibility for introducing wacko and her treble wacko hubby to his book ... desperation, the kid is not going to be engineer material [but I can hope] but I am trying to save him from a life of flipping hamburgers.
That written, much of this book covers what was called `practical math' ... really useful stuff not `rocket science' stuff culled from an MIT blackboard.
This book not only well written and understandable it is totally without the sick `humor' which seems to be in style in maths books.

4-0 out of 5 stars For those who need to brush up their math ....
Many of us forget math concepts we were introduced to at school. For a quick brush up, this is a good reference book. Fractions, decimals, percents, arithmetic concepts, elementary algebra, trigonometry and other such items are all covered. Besides, in keeping with its title of"everyday math," the book also goes into such things are interestrates, IRA and 410(k) math, stocks, mortgages, basic book-keeping and evencasino gambling! The occasional anecdote or story pertaining to math (onewas on the titles of alcohol measures such as jeroboams and rehoboams, another on the Father of Algebra) give welcome breaks from the technicaltext. ... Who invented numbers? What are prime numbers? How do you do longdivision? How do you calculate percentages? If your child is asking for help with these questions, and you're feeling a little rusty, this is the perfect book to have on hand--for yourself and your inquisitive fourth- tosixth-grader. Colorful and accessible, this clear guide defines math terms and concepts with both visual and written description. For example, authors Anne Zeman and Kate Kelly describe a fraction as "one or more parts of a whole or a set," and they also offer the image of a necklace of beads to show how each bead is part of a set. The book is divided into the followingsections: "Numbers and Number Systems" (ancient number systems, the decimal system);"Basic Math Functions" (math symbols, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, rounding and estimation, averages and medians, properties and orders, story problems); "Measurement" (measuring length, distance, weight, perimeter and area, volume, temperature, time); "Geometry" (geometric shapes, symmetry, congruence, similarity); "Money and Monetary Systems" (U.S. currency, other currency systems); "Graphs" (plotting information, four kinds of graphs); "Statistics and Probability"; "Computers and Calculators" (the abacus, simple calculators, the computer); and a complete index. Information for the Scholastic Homework Reference Series wasgathered from current textbooks, national curricula, and the assistance of the UFT Dial-A-Teacher staff. (Ages 9 and older) ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great reference for homeschoolers
We checked this book out of the library, and I love it.I recently started homeschooling my 4th grader.Teaching math has proved a challenge for me--I have trouble helping him understand key concepts.I found this book at the library and it has become indispensible.I'm now buying a copy so that I don't need to keep checking it out.

I too have found a couple of errors, but since I am referring to it, not my son, it has not been a problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the best book!
I love this book.I bought a copy for my oldest child 8 years ago to help her understand various math concepts and help with homework as needed. All three of my children have used it over the years and I am once again introducing it to my students at our local elementary school. The visual examples and wording in the book really help children to understand. The index is very thorough and allows the child to find what they need quickly. It's a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent math reference for 4th to 6th grade
This book provides an excellent overview of math through 6th grade. Each topic is covered clearly and concisely in 2 to 4 pages: idea overview, verbal description, formulae, picture demonstrating the algorithm, and one or more examples. Pictures clearly demonstrate the idea, and are colorful and creative, adding to interest.Descriptions are clear yet brief, as is the entire book.Does not include problems to be worked by the student. Many topics covered, including addition, subtraction, long division, factoring numbers, greatest common denominator, money, measuring, computing volume, and more. Well organized chapters and table of contents provides easy access to information required.Excelent reference to help 4th to 6th graders understand their math homework.

We purchased this book in 2006 and found no errors so far. It has really helped my daughter with her math homework.

5-0 out of 5 stars Homeschooler's Blessing
My mathphobic 11 year old went wild when he saw this book. He loved it!!! And as a 20 year veteran of homeschooling, I find it's a fantastic resource - I don't know how we ever lived without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Terrific Book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference book for elementary school kids
I actually prefer this book to the in-color, glossy, more expensive Scholastic Homework Reference book, "Everything You need to know about Math Homework."

It is black and white, printed on rather cheap paper, but the information is presented clearly and concisely. Each page is laid out the same:A header in the same font and in the same grey bar, with the information below in grey boxes. It is easy to read, and easy to find what you are looking for.

The book also contains a handy glossary in the back.

My son has been in 4th grade for about 3 weeks now, and this is the book we looked at to review lines of symmetry and fractions. ... Read more

Book Description
Acing the New SAT I Math is a test prep guide for the math section of the new SAT I.The book covers all the math topics found on the new SAT I, organized clearly into twenty chapters by subject: 11 chapters under "Arithmetic and Algebra," 6 chapters under "Coordinate Geometry," and 3 chapters under the label "Other Topics."

The comprehensiveness and methodical organization of the book make it a stand-alone resource, so students can prepare for the SAT and PSAT on their own.The clear subject organization also enables students to focus more time and energy on the topics they find most challenging.

Each chapter starts with a tutorial that provides key terms and illustrations in the left-hand column and example problems in the right-hand column.Acing employs the "key terms" format to teach students mathematical concepts as clearly and directly as possible, eliminating the unnecessary wordiness found in many other test prep books.Placing these terms and illustrations alongside example problems enables students to simultaneously learn the mathematical concepts and the application of these concepts.

The tutorial is followed by a set of practice problems.Answers and complete explanations are provided so students can identify and build on their mistakes. This book does not offer any gimmicks or "test tricks."Working on the belief that practice is the best preparation for any test, including a standardized exam like the SAT, Acing simply focuses on teaching and reinforcing the necessary skills. To that end, the book gives students 500+ practice problems (not including the examples or practice tests), many more than are found in other test prep books.

Finally, since students should also be ready for the test-taking situation, the book includes three realistic practice tests. These tests are also accompanied by answers and complete explanations. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Test Prep
I use this book in my SAT prep class. Both my students and I find this book is very helpful and well organized. Thumbs UP!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful book
I bought this book for my daughter and this is a very useful book for her. This book has a lot of practice and very detail explaination. My daughter improves a lot after learning this book. I very recommend this book for the people who want to know more about SAT MAT I.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, you can increase your SAT I math score dramatically
By using this book as a study guide, my daughter increased her SAT I math score by 110 points. She did this over the course of 25 days, doing a section of the book each day in addition to her other school work. She was motivated to do this by the need to increase her score to qualify for a program that she was interested in.
I chose this book for her because it was laid out in managable chapters and had a review at the end of each section. Of all the SAT math review books, this one seemed to approach the subject in the most logical fashion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Bill
I am private math SAT tutor and a math professor at a top tier university in New England, and I recommend this book without reservation. The problems are thorough and serve as an excellent refresher for the types of problems found on the new SAT 1 math portions.

If you are looking for a review book that prepares you and then a little bit more for the SAT 1 test, this will do it. Thisbook assumes you have a good foundation on high school math tobegin with; but if you are looking for a cookbook to fill the voids in your math foundation, this review book does not provide that level of hand-holding.

I use this book when I tutor students for the SAT 1 math sections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good and comprehensive
This book is a very fine book to study in preparation for the New SAT I. I've studied MANY different SAT books as a student. This book offers problems that may be given on the SAT's that I have not seen in other books. There are all levels of difficulties also. There is no "fluffy" pages with wordy explanations. Its explanations and summaries of every topic is concise and understandable. A major plus of this book is that it offers MANY math problems of every subject covered on the SAT I. (the key way in getting a higher score is being exposed to many types of problems and becoming familiar with them through repeated exercises)Each page of this book is worth its money. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good review, not great for the non-math minded
This offers a decent review. It moves slowly in the beginning, but picks up the pace almost too fast in the end. Also, much of the terminology was different than what I learned in school, so I had to translate much of the book.It did give me a good review, though, and I did much better on the math portion of the test than I would have without it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommendable!
This book is very useful, very organized in presenting and showing solutions. It is easy to understand. I highly recommend it to everybody who wants to refresh their math.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great
This book provided a good refresher in terms of math skills that have not been used for a while. It had good explainations and questions, however I would use this early on and study actual math tactics in a GRE math book specifically, because you do not have enough time on the actual GRE to do the math questions as explained by this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars GRE math refresher--great!
The concept reviews and practice sets were easy-to-follow, focused and extremely helpful.I highly recommend this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful
I'm awful at math, and bought this book to help me prepare for the GRE.I was not very impressed with it.Since the GRE is multiple choice and you have limited time to finish, you need help on how to cut corners (e.g. work backwards, guesstimate etc), which this book does not provide.I found the math chapters in the GRE-specific manuals much better. That said, if you need a short refresher on math -and- have plenty of time to prepare for the GRE, this might help you out.For me, the Princeton Review "Cracking the GRE"and the Kaplan GRE comprehensive edition worked better. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Math Study Guide
Heard great things from my colleagues about this series. They really lived up to my expectation though the book covers could have been laminated to make them sturdier! Overally speaking, it is a very good book. Basic to advanced. Tons of difficult questions. Solutions are very detailed. I also found a lot of free downloadable study guides from Manhattan Review's website (www.Manhattanreview.com). Try it. I also emailed them directly about my suggestions on the books. They were very responsive and receptive. In sum, I recommend the Turbocharge books after going through a half dozen other study books. OG is also a must.

4-0 out of 5 stars updates
I have recently purchased a set of Turbocharge GMAT books. The books are
very comprehensive and well structured with practice problems at the back of
the book behind all the chapter-by-chapter instructions. I noticed that all
the books are updated recently within the last two months. It is quite
assuring to know someone is always fine-tuning the content and updating it.
Highly recommend it. A friend studied with the set and scored 740 lately. I
hope I will match or beat it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Many Mistakes!!!
This book is good cause it is small, has a good glossary of terms/formulas, but there are a ton of mistakes. Some that apply to numbers and make some concepts hard to understand.Plus, they don't explain anything. They show you a concept, give you a couple practice questions, then that's it.I guess that's a way for them to sell the other book and make more money. For the size of the book and overall worth of it to me, I'd pass. The 1st 20 or so pages are good, but the rest was sub-par.I prefer Princeton Review's Cracking the GMAT.

2-0 out of 5 stars where's the rest of it?
I have only been using this book for only a couple of days but I have already found quite a number of errors. This is unforgivable for such a text book which the reader is relying heavily on to be accurate in order to understand the concepts it is attempting to explain.Especially considering the price compared to many other GMAT texts.

Also, what is the point of providing practise questions in the chapters if you don't also provide the answers? How do you know if you're getting it right? If the answers and techniques are shown then it helps understanding.Something the authors obviouslymissed.

I'm shocked by the high ratings this book has received. Granted, it's quite well structured and gets down to the stuff you need to know ( I assume) but it feels like it was put together very quickly with information left out.

The GMAT Official Guide seems to be the best of a bad bunch.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quite helpful
Although math is the easier part of GMAT, typically people out of school for a while need to get the skills back. This book does an adequate job for that.

It comes with two free online tests which I found very useful. I also checked out their free online workshop recording on GMAT & MBA Admissions. Very informative. Another valuable freebie for any MBA aspirants. ... Read more
