Product Description

A field-tested and research-based approach to mathematics instruction for students with learning problems designed to build the confidence and competence of pre-service and in-service teachers (Pre-K-12).

Field-testing over a three-year period showed the approaches in this book resulted in significantly improved teacher candidate attitudes about mathematics, increased mathematics content understanding, and professional-level skills in mathematics assessment and instruction. Teacher and student attitudes about mathematics are addressed from the first page, as are other student learning issues such as language, specific mathematics disabilities, prior experiences, and cognitive and metacognitive factors. Written in a clear and engaging style this book is also organized to make it easy for practicing teachers to locate material, ensuring the text will continue to serve as a valuable reference in the classroom as well.

“The author has a good overall view of what is needed to teach the target students. The format of the book flows well and gives needed support to each section as needed. … The rationale for this book is very much in line with the current thinking as I see it for a book dealing with this type and scope of material.” –J. Patrick Brennan, Ed.D., Armstrong Atlantic State University

Highlights:

  • References national mathematics content and process standards (NCTM) – standards often ignored by special education texts.
  • Pre-K to 12 scope that enhances student ability to diagnose gaps in learning and provides appropriate content connections, a benefit that addresses NCLB’s “highly qualified” requirement.
  • Attention to both pedagogical issues and approaches and specific content area instruction, enabling students to develop a comprehensive pedagogical repertoire and strong content understanding.
  • Realistic teacher vignettes incorporated in each chapter that connect to chapter concepts and offer additional opportunities for discussion.
  • “Try This” boxes that actively engage students with the material during reading and instructors can draw on these additional exercises during class activities

Product Description
This is a little book for students to have the essential formulas and equations of mathematics in a single easily accessible source. In about 50 pages, the 350 most essential mathematical formulas are listed. Unlike other large books on this topic, there is no need to go through hundreds of pages and thousands of formulas for the student to get the basic equations. The author has searched several books on mathematical formulas and tables and selected only those equations which are essential to the student. The mathematical formulas and equations listed in this book are useful for students and researchers in various fields including mathematics, physics, engineering, etc. Only the most elementary and basic topics are covered including formulas for various geometric shapes, several types of functions (trigonometric, hyperbolic, exponential, logarithmic, etc), the quadratic equation, analytic geometry, derivatives and integrals, arithmetic series, geometric series, andTaylor series. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent mathematics reference book for late elementary or early middle school children
Students in late elementary school reach the point where they now have enough mathematical background so that they need reference materials. Those reference materials are basic, generally definitions and a short historical background. This book provides the references necessary for students in late elementary and middle school to understand and explore mathematics.
A large number of figures, graphs and tables are used to demonstrate the concepts. The basic arithmetic operations, statistical computations, probability, measurements and fundamental geometric figures are all covered. Written in clear concise text, a short set of review problems is included at the end of the sections. An answer key to the review problems, a glossary and an index together form the last section.
This book is a simple, effective reference book for the basic mathematical concepts. It is worthy addition to any elementary school library.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not worth it. Useless
Useless book for a grade 2 kid. it is a book for parents not for the child. One has to read and give instructions to the kid to make mathematical observations during our daily lifes. what a piece of S**T. Not even worth a $1.00 i paid plus $3.99 shipping. Don.t buy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars As a tutor
In my spare time I work as a math tutor.Currently I have a few grade school students who use the Everyday Mathematics program.Since I do not have all the materials that the teachers have, knowing what exactly to tell the kids can be difficult at time.Luckily for me and my students, Everyday Mathematics provides a student reference book. With the aid of this book, reinforcing the lesson at home is much easier and much more effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars As an editor
I came across this book almost a year ago now.I didn't think much of it at the time, but as worked progressed (I am a grade school math books editor myself) I found that the UCSMP Everyday Mathematics Student Reference Book was superior to the text that I was currently working on.Its now disappointing to see my publsiher work they way they do, but reassuring to know that some people still care enough to put out a quality product. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Positively an addition to any homeschool bookshelf!
There are several things I really like about the Singapore Approach to math and this workbook in particular.

1.It's all in black and white on the inside pages, which allows the student to focus on the MATH concepts / problems rather than being distracted by lots of flashy color and activities.

2.There is a terrific variety of problem types.Students do basic addition and subtraction in different formats, learn to use picture and bar graphs, figure out how to "translate" items into units, compare numbers, learn to regroup, telling time, counting money, solve basic word problems and much more.Normally I would think this was a bit much for a first grade book, but the concepts are added in a sensible order so that students progress at a reasonable rate.

3.There is plenty of review.Students are not bombarded with the same problems over and over, but the author does include enough review exercises so that the student will not forget the material in previous lessons.

4.The ONLY thing I didn't like about the book were short sections where the student had to write the particular mathematics "rule" for a function.Although I thought this was a bit too much to write for first graders, we got around this problem by simply letting our first grader TELL us the answer out loud (rather than write it down) so the book still gets five stars!

I wish all public schools would use this book.It makes learning math so much easier. As for homeschoolers - you have a choice!Don't hesitate. This is a wonderful product and if you have more than one child close to first grade level, you could let them all work through it together. You don't HAVE to use it just for first grade.

3-0 out of 5 stars Need More Info
I do not have this product. I would really like to buy it, but feel that there is not enough information provided on the Amazon site about what is taught in each level, therefore making it extremely difficult to know which level to purchase. There is no information about how accelerated the program is. Should I buy the level that his physical age is? (second grade) or the level of math he is currently doing? (sixth grade).
