5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Program
I began using Saxon Math Homeschool because I needed to home school for a few years and wanted to use the same curriculum as the school I expect to send the kids to when we move back "home." I was delighted with Saxon K and am just as pleased with Saxon 1. My 5 year son old is doing well with it and enjoys most of the lessons (because it was designed originally as a remedial program the publisher says kids can easily work one year ahead of designated "grade"). He does not however enjoy all the written work and we don't really need to do all of it. Each grade level repeats a healthy portion of the previous book. It is a great curriculum to stick with and I don't know anyone who has switched to something else once they used Saxon.
I would recommend it to anyone! The hands on lessons and the incremental approach are great. Incremental means rather than a chapter of this and a chapter of that each lesson builds a little and concepts are interwoven. For instance dimes and pennies are interwoven with counting by tens, adding up a receipt with money in the tens place & ones place, and regrouping is introduced by exchanging pennies for dimes.
There are specific manipulatives required for this program: balance, student clock (teacher clock with gearing is very helpful), geoboard with rubber bands, hundred number chart, mathlink cubes, pattern blocks, & ruler. You will also need the work books. Some people skip the meeting book portion of the lesson but I find it helpful though we don't do it every day. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Saxon really works for the lower grades
This is a general review of Saxon, not specifically this book.Saxon math program has worked for both of my kids for the lower grades. However, as soon as the student gets mature enough to say "now I am studying this topic.", I switch him or her to Singapore Primary Math. Saxon Math grades 1 through 3 comes as worksheets, which are very easy to use. Each worksheet has "more of the same" on the back, which you can skip if the child already "gets it".Saxon 2nd grade covers the material that is being taught in public school nowadays in 1st grade (except that with Saxon, your child will actually master the material).Use the placement tests availableonline. For each grade, the first 20 lessons repeat what was done in the previous year, so feel free to skip most of them.In Saxon, if your student is very good at math, I recommend that you skip every other day's lesson, or else at least cross out the review problems. Some students like the success that comes with repetition, but for many students, Saxon provides way too much tedious practice.

When your student can do the work quickly, consistently scores 100%, and is bored, it is time to consider transitioning to Singapore Math.Singapore Math gives a much more profound understanding of math, so if your student can handle it, I suggest using Singapore instead.Beware that 7/6 or 6/5 in Saxon is equivalent to level 3b in Singapore, so you will need to step down. There are good placement tests available for both systems.

One caveat:The last 20 or so lessons for each grade look like they are not really meant to be covered. They seem to jump around and not really cover things methodically. It seems like they are only meant as enrichment for students who have completed the year's work fast.So if you find the last few lessons in the book too hard foryour student, strangely enough, justjump to the next year for easier problems.

This math program is great for homeschooling because the student can work somewhat independently, and each day's work is clearly delineated.

If your child is using Everyday Math or some other flavor of "Chicago Math" in school - in other words, your child is not learning math in school, Saxon is a solid program that you can use at home. From what I understand, the better private schools use Saxon one year ahead of grade level.

Another caveat: the worksheets are great, but some advanced students, particularly the 6-year-olds who can do Math 3, and particularly boys, may find that they have trouble doing their work within the space provided or with organizing their work. They are still developmentally not ready to write their numbers smaller, or they have trouble positioning things.I find that with my kids, I sometimes need to draw blank worksheets for some of the questions.Children working at grade level, especially if they are girls, are not as likely to have this problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great Math Program
When you order the Saxon Math program be sure you get the complete kit. You will need the student workbooks and the teacher's book.

This program is a comprehensive math program that develops on itself. It continually provides assessments as a means of checking and rechecking learning and retention. The one thing it does not do very well is provide a guide to what to do when the child fails the assessment. It moves at a fairly even pace.

Product Description
Innovative, hands-on math and science activities of many cultures, from one of the world's foremost science museums.

Too often, the study of science, math, and technology is limited to the major successes of the Western world. Yet people all over the world have observed and explored nature and developed technologies to help them in their everyday lives.

From the creators of the national bestseller and Parent's Choice Book Award-winner The Explorabook (over one million copies sold) comes Math and Science Across Cultures, designed to help teachers, parents, and youth-group leaders use hands-on activities to explore the math and science of different cultural traditions, and to make these subjects more relevant and approachable for children of all backgrounds. With instructions in this book, you can:

• Construct a Brazilian carnival instrument and investigate the science of sound.
• Play a peg solitaire game from Madagascar and learn about mathematical patterns.
• Experiment with a traditionally prepared cup of Chinese tea and learn about energy flow.
• Count like an Egyptian, decipher Mayan mathematical symbols, and decode the ancient Inca number system of knotted cords. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hole-Free Math Skills
In his customary succinct and painless way, Richard Fisher has written a series of skill specific math workbooks. Like an efficient patch kit, each book seals any holes that might exist in your student's math skills. I had the opportunity to look over these six, streamlined, no-fluff workbooks (just the way I like them). Fractions, Geometry, Percents and Decimals, Problem Solving, Whole Numbers and Integers, and Pre-algebra Concepts are individually and precisely targeted. Each subject is given a thorough yet simple treatment (a rare combination). First, by laying a firm foundation with the basics, building precept upon precept, and finally topping off the skills we have gained with final reviews to ensure hole-free mastery. With my limited understanding of math, I was able to easily comprehend the short lessons in the Helpful Hints section with examples. I could have used a little more explanation for the more complex concepts to nudge my brain to its grasping point; still, I was able to ascertain a concept by looking at the answer and figuring out how it was arrived at (I call it creative learning). I used Pre-Algebra Concepts with companion DVD for a review of Pre-Algebra and would unquestionably have used it as my son's primary text had I discovered this series sooner (the other books in this series do not come with a companion DVD). I recommend these books and will be using them for reinforcing any weak areas that crop up in my son's math comprehension. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Miquon Must-Have
The Miquon Lab Sheet Annotations are an absolute must-have alongside the Miquon Math series. Without the annotations, it would have been quite challenging for me to figure out what to do. I am a teacher (whose strong suit is not math) and am fortunate to have to the lab sheet annotations as my guide. I also purchased the First Grade Diary and Cuisenaire Rods to further compliment the series.

5-0 out of 5 stars Miquon Math with Cuisenaire Rods
I am a former public school teacher . . . this is interesting to teach - I have used it two years in home school situation with two children - my granddaughter now finishing 2nd grade and the 3rd (blue) book and my just turned five year old grandson in the 1st (orange) book. Fun to teach . . . kids love the "hands on" approach . . . concepts are grouped so childrenget a feel for the relationships between numbers . . . then they are asked to "make up a problem of your own."Wonderful!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great math program
My daughter loves this math program! We have started homeschool this year partly because she was so far behind in math and could not keep up.She hated math and it was a struggle when we first started math at home. Then I came across the Miquon series and bought the whole set.My daughter loves it she acctually likes to do math now!We have skipped around in the books a little since she had some of the basics down already. It still has been good to have the orange book because we have been able to review.I am so excited because my six year old started it today and he likes it too.I highly recomend this math program!

5-0 out of 5 stars Miquon + Cuisenaire Rods -A Way to REALLY Understand Math!
Miquon + Cuisenaire Rods = a wonderful way to learn mathematics!I'm a homeschool mom, and my son used the Miquon Math Student Workbooks (consumable) along with the necessary Cuisenaire Rods to discover math inan enjoyable, stress-free, hand-on "Mathematics Lab"-style way.[Another veteran homeschooling mom recommended Miquon to ME:)]

The"Miquon Teachers Manual: Lab Sheet Annotations" book -- anintegral part of learning math the Miquon way -- is a one-time purchase --as it covers all six of the student workbooks. The Lab Sheet Annotationsare just that -- helpful, informative, illuminating descriptions andexamples... Very few "answers" are given in the Lab SheetAnnotations -- which is a plus -- moms and dads can discover the joy andsimplicity of math in a way that they've probably never experienced itbefore -- along with their children.

I can't imagine a better way todiscover the patterns and concepts of mathematics. I highly recommend theCuisenaire Rods, Miquon Student Workbooks, and the Miquon Teachers Manual:Lab Sheet Annotations. Your student will be introduced to such concepts asmultiplication, division, fractions, and factors in the FIRST grade -- allwhile "experimenting" (playing) with their Cuisenairerods!

NOTE: In response to another reviewer's opinion that "The downside to this book is sometimes the workbook sheets that are reproduced andreduced in size in Annotations, are not easy for the student tofollow." -- While all of the Student Workbook sheets are duplicated --in a reduced size -- in the Lab Sheet Annotations for reference, the intentis for the student to use the very reasonably-priced, consumable StudentWorkbooks.

3-0 out of 5 stars Annotations reviewed
I think the Annotations book is good for those comfortable using the Cuisenaire rods. The hands-on Cuisenaire rods are used extensively throughout the book. The Annotations book is basically a teacher's guidefor using the Miquon Math workbook series. It does help with clarifyingconcepts introduced in the Miquon books. The down side to this book issometimes the workbook sheets that are reproduced and reduced in size inAnnotations, are not easy for the student to follow. ... Read more
