1-0 out of 5 stars Misrepresentation
Pstricia S Klein is simply cashing in on the good name of CS Lewis to her own personal benefit. She adds nothing to the conversation yet is more than willing take that which she has NOT EARNED.If you buy this book under the assumption that it is the complete CS Lewis, simply return to Amazon. This book does nothing for Amazon's character or reputation.

1-0 out of 5 stars Quick, let's take a few quotes from Screwtape, publish it seperately, and call it a new book!!!!

Oh look, a new C. S. Lewis book! But didn't he die in 1963.So how is this a new book?

Well, Walter Hooper, his lit. exector, has made a cottage industry in the last 40 years of publishing posthumous C. S. Lewis books, from little inconsequentials (such as this) to more substantial works.Over the years these posthumous publications have come under heavy fire as being suspect or counterfeit works, or changed or badly edited.I've read one version of Screwtape where Lewis references the books of a particular writer (don't remember who), and in this newer publication Hooper changed the writer to Lewis.Bad, bad, bad, Mr. Hooper.

Such is the case here. All this book amounts to is a few quotes from THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS.That's it.Screwtape Letters is a mere 160 pages. Why not buy the full book and just read it.Publications like this are just in poor taste.

Yes Virginia, this is no such thing as a "new" C. S. Lewis book.Just the publishers and Walter Hooper trying to squeeze out more money from his fans. Now, what would Screwtape say about Greed, Mr. Hooper?

1-0 out of 5 stars Paved with Profiteering Intentions
Beware of "new" books by authors who passed away in the 60s. Lewis' tireless literary executor and editor, Walter Hooper, incessantly repackages Lewis' writings and markets them as new books. Recombining and repackaging for new audiences is warranted under some circumstances. But why abridge "The Screwtape Letters," which weighed in at a scant 160 pages to begin with? Buy the original; "Paved with Good Intentions" is not.

1-0 out of 5 stars Read the Real Book
This is just a cheap quick money making scheme by publishers. They took a few excerpts from the Screwtape letters and called it a new book. For the same amount of money and sometimes less you could get the real complete book.Don't waste your time with this wasteful volume. ... Read more

Product Description
Did you ever

dream of talking to a mermaid?

Can you imagine

facing off with a bully who

barely reaches your knees?

What would you do

with a box of golden coins?

Have you ever

said thank you to...a button?

And how would you respond if you met a magic genie who asked you for a handout instead of granting you a wish?

Free to Be...You and Me creator Marlo Thomas has once again produced a joyful volume for children and the grown-ups in their lives. Reaching into the heads and hearts of our most acclaimed writers, artists, and performers, Thanks & Giving celebrates the best things in life -- family, friendship, giving, thankfulness, and love (and just for fun, a few of their opposites -- stinginess, bullying, ingratitude, and the occasional urge to stamp your feet and throw a fit).

From Tiger Woods and Maurice Sendak to Hilary Duff and Newbery Medalist Kate DiCamillo, this colorful collection of stories, poems, and songs will take readers on a lighthearted and thoughtful (but never overserious) adventure. Whether you're gazing at the brilliant child's-eye paintings of illustrator Eric Carle, or laughing out loud at the off-the-wall humor of Mel Brooks, you'll enjoy every step of the magical journey that the creators of Thanks & Giving have planned for you:

• Delight in Jon Scieszka and Lane Smith's fractured fable starring a mouse, a bird, and a sausage who learn all about sharing -- the hard way.

• Hold on tight as Rosie Perez recounts the tale of a little girl confronted with a heart-stopping decision.

• Rock along with Kevin and Michael Bacon's funky valentine to sibling rivalry and brotherly love.

• And laugh with Ray Romano as he reveals how his life was changed by a giant burrito.

Designed for both cover-to-cover reading and selective excerpting (when you can't refuse that last impassioned call for "One more story!" just before lights-out), this sparkling anthology also includes marvelous contributions from Avi, Shel Silverstein, Tom Chapin, Arthur creator Marc Brown, Matt Groening, Deepak Chopra, Donald Trump, Frankie Muniz, Walter Dean Myers, Paul Newman, Sumner Redstone, Jerry Pinkney, Whoopi Goldberg, Sonia Manzano, the Sesame Street Muppets, Julianne Moore, Ed Koren, Wendy Wasserstein, and Paul O. Zelinsky. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice book but my kids like the CD - and you'll have to buy it seperately
As a child of the '70s who grew up on Free To Be You And Me, I was excited to learn that Marlo Thomas and Friends had published another collection! This nicely illustrated book includes a whimsical variety of stories, poems, and songs as well as a teaser CD with three of the selections performed by famous people (much like Free To Be You And Me). I was mislead by the discription into thinking that all of the selections would be included on the CD and was very disappointed to find that they weren't.I ended up ordering the complete CD seperately and my kids really do love it.The book is nice but if you have to choose one or the other, I would recommend the CD.

2-0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE:VERY MISLEADING PACKAGING OF BOOK AND CD
I am extremely disappointed with this purchase (and I just made three of them.)Last year I bought the book and the companion CD separately, so when I saw this special edition and price with the book and CD combined, I was delighted because I could afford to give both as Christmas gifts for three separate families.Boy was I embarassed yesterday when they opened up the book and tucked in the back was the "CD" with only 3 songs on it (as opposed to the nearly 20 the original has).I reread the description of this edition on Amazon's website this morning and I don't see it mentioned anywhere that the CD was so incomplete. It implies its the same CD as the companion CD.Charity or no charity, this should have been clearly explained in Amazon's description. If that was the case, I would have bought my family members ONLY the companion CD, which we've enjoyed much more than the book (which is pretty uneven, as previous reviewers have noted.)BUYER BEWARE!

3-0 out of 5 stars Odd but well intended
This collection of stories, reminiscences, poems, songs, from famous authors and show-biz folks hangs on a thin thread of "thankfulness" to unify its contents. Sometimes, it's just not quite enough. Good stories by JonScieszka, Whoopi Goldberg, Tiger Woods, Kate DeCamillo (Winn Dixie), and cute songs (CD is good too)redeem the weaker entries. This will be heavily promoted because its royalties go to St. Jude's Hospital and media campaign starts right after football on T-Day. It would make a nice present for your child's dentist or doctor for the waiting room--all the stories are short and sweet. ... Read more

Product Description

Over the fifteen years that Harvey Cox taught his Harvard undergraduate class Jesus and the Moral Life, the course grew so popular that the lectures had to be taught in a theater usually reserved for rock concerts. The overwhelming response was a clear signal of the hunger for guidance in today's confusing world, where moral guidelines seem to shift daily. How can we ask today "What Would Jesus Do?," when Jesus never had to cope with an unintended pregnancy, or confront a teenage daughter about her drug use, or decide whether to put an ailing parent in a retirement home?
In his new book, Cox brings the moral wisdom of Rabbi Jesus into the twenty-first century by way of the questions, arguments, responses, and doubts of centuries of rabbinic and Christian theological exploration, as well as the voices of the thousands of Harvard students who attended his course over the years. Cox shows how we can extrapolate from Jesus' parables and bridge the gap between the ancient and modern worlds. As an example, he recalls his experience while locked in a southern jail during the civil rights movement, when the song "We Shall Overcome" rang from nearby cells. The message he takes is from the story of the Resurrection: transcendent hope rising from the depths of injustice.
When Jesus Came to Harvard is not another look at the "historical Jesus," but it considers Jesus' contemporary significance by concentrating on the stories he told and those told about him. For youth and adults, Christian and non-Christian, When Jesus Came to Harvard is urgently relevant.

i thoroughly enjoyed this wonderful book from a serious scholar and very spiritual man. it helped coroborate some of my own ideas about jesus and god and spirituality. i enjoyed every single page. the writing style kept me thoroughly engaged. i can't recommend it enough to anyone with an open mind and a spirtual bend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Young people need to think about moral choices.
It pleases me to know that liberal arts schools care about the moral issues using a religious format.A recent article in Newsweek suggests that this program is no longer functioning.I hope that Harvey Cox's retirement did not cause the demise of such a good class.

Great read. This book is about making moral choices. It should be a required read for all on Wall Street and those in business.

3-0 out of 5 stars An Honest Book That All Can Enjoy
Title: When Jesus Came to Harvard - making moral choices today
Author: Harvey Cox
Published: NY: Houghton Mifflin, 2004

The well-known Harvard University was first founded in 1636 as a place to train Puritan clergymen for ministry. Through the years, it has shed its religious affiliation to become one of the world's most famous secular institutions of higher learning. The title of the book can mislead readers into thinking Harvard has become more religious recently. Nothing could be further from the truth. The key incentive lies in the authors belief that Jesus is relevant today. Moreover, in the light of many recent moral failures, there is a greater need to cultivate moral values into the premier institution of learning, so that Harvard graduates will live with integrity and stay on the right side of moral behavior. Harvey Cox's course, "Jesus and the Moral Life" at Harvard is consistently one of the most popular undergraduate courses at Harvard. The teachings of Jesus form the bulwark of this book of moral reasoning from the point of view of Jesus the Rabbi-Teacher. In this book, Jesus is translated not only as a teacher to students of the Bible, but a Rabbi for the world. The course curriculum is based largely on the life of Jesus and the stories he told.

Why You Should Read This Book
Jesus' teachings have universal application. Both Christians and non-Christians have everything to gain and little to lose. Cox says that `there is no generation gap' with regards to Jesus's teachings (10). Cox maintains that Jesus is relevant and morally significant, especially in a corrupted world of today. The challenge is connecting yesterday's teachings with today's relevance. Two keys are necessary. The first is to remember Jesus is himself a rabbi, a skilled teacher who uses stories as a key teaching tool. The second is to relate Jesus' stories yesterday via creative imaginations of today.

Key Observations

* Cox focuses not on the content of the stories but the narrative style itself, connecting it to the way people learn, ie via stories.
* Some of the gospel narratives are meant to be sung, rather than analyzed, such as the genealogies (50); [This connects to the need to be imaginative in our applications]
* Jesus read the signs of the times accurately (84); [this forces us to read our own modern signs]
* Religious imagination is necessary in order to see Jesus's relevance; this is especially when Jesus's teachings can have more than one interpretations (90);
* Reading the gospel introduces a more personal touch, like Jesus' road to the crucifixion being of one with anguish; much like modern ethical processes that puts decision-makers to agonizing tough choices (104);
* One conviction Cox maintains is that the declining interest of religious studies does not mean people do not need to grapple with issues religions have long wrestled with. In other words, religion is still alive and well. An interesting observation was when Cox, at one year decided to simply pause from introducing the many interpretations of Jesus, to simply let the students interpret the Sermon on the Mount themselves, as if Jesus words were like Jesus's Fifth Symphony.
* One of the touching points of relevance is the healing scenes of Jesus. It sparked off many lively discussions and students were typically more receptive to the topic of healing, and Jesus as a Healer (183-4). [Healing is everybody's business.]

My Comments
This is a not exactly a book for Christians, but that does not preclude believers from learning from it. In fact, some Christians may find Cox's interpretation refreshing. The book treats Jesus primarily as a Rabbi. Some Christians may be uncomfortable with this approach. Yet, I feel that I can understand where Cox is coming from, as his course is supposed to be as open as possible to people of different faiths. What I like in particular is his personal reflection, on Jesus as a person. After all is said and done, he sums up his personal preference, choosing to see Jesus more as his `friend,' highlighting his favorite hymn, What a Friend we have in Jesus. Even though large portions of his book concentrate on Jesus' teachings, and how they can be applied to daily life, his view of Jesus is remarkably more reverent and respectful than some liberal theologians. Some liberal theologians even question the deity of Christ. Cox's fascination with Jesus as a person is a surprising admission by the Harvard don. I am personally glad that he decides to tackle the question: "Who is Jesus?" more seriously toward the end rather than simply relegating Jesus to the rank of a 1st century University Professor. His two observations of the theological confusion surrounding Jesus sum up the essence of his view of Jesus' relevance today.

1) Jesus is able to survive all the different views about him, and remained himself;
2) There is nothing new about multiple interpretations about Jesus. Personally, I feel that every person in the world will have to interpret Jesus for him or herself.

"He is where he always was, doing what he was always doing: teaching, chatting, eating and drinking without regard to rank. Today, like then, he meets the same mixture of `welcome and hesitation, skepticism and rejection. He runs the constant risk of real trouble with both the religious and the political establishments. But he gently forces people to look at life differently." (302)

There are not many books that openly talk about Jesus, and also appeal to both Christians and non-Christians. Cox is open to his students and also to his own discovery of who Jesus is. For this, I must say I enjoy this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Informative almost journalistic into the appreciation of modern ethics
My Profile: 45 yo, unemployed, living in Perth, Australia

As someone who had an unexpected failed second marriage last year, I went into a depression that made discover my faith and touch with God again. Although I am still wondering in the desert, I have retaken all interest in ethics again, that is why at reading the preface for this book, I thought I was going to meet lectures on present day moral issues that were not present (at least in their actual form) in the days when Jesus was walking here. It turned out that the approach was rather hands-off, since the author was not inclined to convincing his students with any moral stance, rather, tod display the problems and report how dis the students react to the issues. I must admitt that sucha an approach represented a sort of a dissappointment for me, slowly I began to appreciate it as showed me an unbias report of how students, of even different religious background, felt about moder day ethical dilemmas.

The book first of all tought me not to shoot out my standing on any moral issue, but to approach it from the point of view that the rabbi of Nazareth (as well as the classical rabbinical style is), to present it with a twist that invites to review your own personal stance on the matter. At least, that is the apprach I will take with my son, as I found out in this book, the fog of ignorance or of wide open confution is more vast than I though of.

I must say, that the book did not help me find comfort to my personal problems, but it did raise my ethical awareness that was dead asleep. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing Book
I have enjoyed Stanford's other books, and the reviews made me believe this would be a great book.Unfortunately, after purchasing it, I realized that it contained very little text and was rather a long list of tables on advanced ways of playing hands. This book would be good for an extremely proficient card counter looking to add more indices to his game; however, it does little to teach someone how to go from being a good card counter to being a professional. It seems more like the output of a computer simulations that we could memorize to alter our playing decisions. While this may be helpful to some, it's certainly not what I was expecting or looking for in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you!
Thank you for this wonderful book.I appreciate its great quality and speedy delivery.

3-0 out of 5 stars It's Okay
Very in-depth information on the art of card counting, doubling, surrendering, etc.Lots of good charts and odds.
Definitely for the professional blackjack aficionado.

5-0 out of 5 stars Card Counter Instruction
The best of 23 BJ books that I read. His instruction on Hi-Lo is absolutely accurate. He has Basic Strategy deviation table to + or - 20 on the different popular casino rules. His calculations on optimal bet is imperative.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but dated.
This is a no-nonsense how-to book on how to gain a mathematical edge over the house when playing blackjack. Wong is a solid writer, and relays the information in a direct and straightforward manner.

There are several counts outlined in the book. Do yourself a favor: learn the simplest count (the Hi-Lo), and learn it well.

A common mistake many beginning players make is to learn the most complicated count available, thinking that this will win them the most money. (In Professional Blackjack, this count is the "Wong Halves.") Don't bother learning this count. Complex counts are worth learning if (1) you are playing single decks almost exclusively where (2) the dealers deal fairly deeply into the deck. While such games existed when Wong originally published this work, they are rare to nonexistent now.

One criticism I have is that Wong gives the act short shrift. In order to gain an edge over the casino, you must learn to count. Wong imparts this message admirably, as far as that goes. But counting is a necessary -- but not sufficient -- condition to take what was until recently the casino's money out the door with all of your body parts intact. To do that, you will have to act like someone who is not counting. Developing an act is extremely important (and is another reason to choose a simple count. You shouldn't look like you are counting while you are counting; hence, choose a count that will allow your brain to do more than one thing at a time.)

I attempt to wrap up each blackjack book I review on two levels:

(1) The *current* practical value of the specific information provided in the book (e.g., basic strategy, counts, betting strategy, etc.)

(2) The *meta-value* of the information contained (meta-value: includes entertainment value, what the book teaches you in general about the game of blackjack, and the practical value of the book given the circumstances of the game at the time the book was written).

1 - The current practical value of this book is fairly high, if you stick to the Hi-Lo count. There is really no good reason (and a number of bad reasons) to learn the Halves count. Similarly, Wonging has now been around for a long, long time, and is unlikely to fool anyone for any length of time.

2 - The meta-value of this book is fairly high. It is one of the few books that in and of itself can turn a reader from a novice to a fair approximation of a professional player. And that is saying a lot. (I'm not suggesting that you should not read other books; only that I believe you could get away with reading this one alone.)

Product Description
For the past three months, Eve Renner has struggled to remember the night she was nearly killed and her lover was tried for murder. She remembers getting the anxious call from a friend from her past: “Meet me at the cabin. I’ve got evidence.” She remembers seeing that friend lying in a pool of blood. And she remembers a horrifying glimpse of her lover Cole Dennis’s face as a gunshot plunged her into darkness. Now, her memory and emotions scarred, Eve has returned to New Orleans to forget the past. But the past will not be forgotten. Eve’s shattered memory has helped Cole walk on murder charges just as a new series of killings begins.

The latest murders are bizarre and baffling. The victims are killed in a ritual fashion, a series of numbers tattooed into their bodies. 212. 101. 111. 323. There is no clue to their meaning, no connection to the victims except one: Our Lady of Virtues Hospital, the crumbling old asylum that was once the scene of unspeakable madness. For Eve, it was a second home as a child. Her father was a doctor there, and she spent hours exploring its secret chambers, hidden rooms, and forbidden passageways. Somewhere in its decaying rooms lies the key to a terrible crime, a betrayal beyond imagining whose echoes are now being felt with a vengeance – a crime that seems to lead to Eve herself. And the only man she can trust with the search is Cole, her former lover and, just possibly, a cold-blooded killer.

As forgotten memories begin to surface, bodies are found and each twist leads to another terrifying piece of the puzzle. Someone is watching, planning, luring her back to the ruins of Our Lady and the shocking truths hidden there – someone who has been waiting for this moment to strike. He is deadlier than she knows. For the sins of the past must be revealed, the crimes brought to justice, and the price paid – in blood.

4-0 out of 5 stars Complex Murder Mystery
The Story
Eve was called one night by a friend, upon arrival she found her friend dead and a gun pointed at her. The last face she saw was her boyfriend Cole. Cole was arrested for murder and attempted murder. Cole was a hot shot lawyer, now he's lost everything. Three months after the murder, Eve is finally heading home to New Orleans. The same day Cole is released, charges dropped. Not enough evidence to convict. Eve starts getting mysterious phone calls with creepy messages. The same day someone plants newspaper articles in her car - all about Faith Chastin. Faith was a patient of Eve's father at the mental hospital. Someone's out to get Cole and Eve. Out of options Eve turns to Cole to to protect her and help her end the madness. Detective Montoya and Bentz are on the case, still unsure of Cole. Bentz's daughter Kristi is also on the case out to write a book, despite of Rick Bentz's requests to stay out of it. Danger follows all them all to one goal that remains unseen.

Thoughts
I love Lisa Jackson's stories. She's an excellent romantic suspense/mystery writer. I set out to read a few chapters and before I knew it the book was over. The pace is fast enough to keep people captivated. Jackson is really good at misdirection when it comes to the plots and the evil doers. The plot is complex with multiple story lines and points of view. Its complex, but simple. It isn't hard to follow or comprehend. I didn't guess who has behind this. Cole and Eve have a complicated by undeniable attraction. Eve quickly understands that Cole would never hurt her. They are unable to stay apart, both are still in love. This story connects so many New Orleans characters together, I'm really glad I read it.The next in these story lines MALICE is another fantastic read to those interested.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hated it!
I just finished this book within the last week. I feel as if I just wasted my time. I have read all three of the previous books that are part of this series, "Shiver", "Hot Blooded", and "Cold Blooded" which I really enjoyed. I looked forward to reading this book because I was hoping it would finish out some of the story-lines from the previous books. Unfortunately, it only half way finished the job and the ending just made me decide that I'm done with this series. I don't know if the author has a contract to write so many books within this series but she really needs to stop already. I mean seriously, how many times can bad things happen to the same people? I'm so tired of reading about Rick Bentz and his daughter Kristi with all of their family drama. In this book, they tied him and his daughter to this new character Eve which really just pissed me off (it just felt like some serious crap). Then she finally explained the rest of the Faith Chastian story and the twists were not worth the wait. The author has never explained what happened to Reuben Montoya's girlfriend. She was mentioned in both "Cold Blooded" and "Shiver" her name was Marta Vasques. She goes missing in "Cold Blooded" and in "Shiver" the reader finds out that she's been dead for two years. At no point, throughout this series has the author explained her death, which is frustrating because in "Shiver" Montoya goes on and on about her so I really would have liked to know what the heck happened.

As for the love scenes, it seems like once you've read one of the books you kind of know what to expect from the next one. They all seem the same except that the names of the people have changed and maybe the scenery (that a big maybe). For the most part all of these people's lives are in danger (especially the women) but they are always willing to make time to jump into the bed and get some "so-called" great sex while being stalked by some Catholic killer that wants them to pay for their sins. And wouldn't you know that the killer always sees them having this great sex at some point in these books. It all gets pretty old pretty fast when your working on a series of books that seem to share the same theme and the same characters over and over again. At what point do these character's learn from what has happened and move forward in a positive light? I guess never because now the author plans on killing off Rick Bentz at some point which seems pointless to me.

So if you can't tell from the heading, I really disliked this book. I'm glad I checked it out from the library and didn't buy it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Stupidest Characters Ever
Listening to Absolute Fear by Lisa Jackson was like watching a train wreck-- there was much of it that was unbelievably awful but I stuck with it because I was interested in the underlying mystery and wanted one of the main questions answered.

First let me say that the two main characters, Eve Renner and Cole Dennis, were the stupidest characters ever. Eve is suffering from amnesia from a gunshot wound several months ago. The only memory she has of the night she was shot is of her fiance, Cole Dennis, pointing the gun at her. Now she is heading back to New Orleans to start her life again. The DA has declined to prosecute Cole because Eve's lack of memory makes her a less than credible witness-- her lack of memory and the fact that traces of some other man's sperm were found in her vagina, along with Cole's sperm since she had been in bed with him when she left to meet an old friend who called to tell her he had evidence of something. When she gets to his remote cabin, she finds him with his throat slashed. Then she is shot.

However now she is back in New Orleans and some creepy guy keeps calling her on her cell phone and growling creepy statements like "He's free!" Yet she keeps answering her phone. Hello! He can't bug you if you don't answer the phone dummy! The night she returns to New Orleans, someone slashes her father's throat and his body is discovered by Cole. Then there are more bodies, all of them seemingly related to the mental asylum where her father was head psychiatrist when she was growing up and where she used to play on the grounds.

Now despite the fact that people around her are being killed and that she seems to be at the center of things, she ventures into the insane asylum, long ago locked up and abandoned, to look for her father's files. While she's there, guess what? Yep, the killer is there too and leaves a gruesome artifact for her to discover. Cole shows up at the asylum but instead of calling the police to look at the artifact, they wait till the next day to take the police there, by which time, as any idiot could have told them, the artifact is gone. Instead they find another dead body in its place.

Then later when she and Cole are going back to her house, they notice her cat is outside even though she is sure she left him inside. Yet neither of them thinks this is suspicious, even though someone has obviously targeted Eve, is making strange calls to her cell phone and the people around her are dropping like flies. Not surprisingly, they find the artifact in her bedroom, giving Eve yet another opportunity to break down and seek solace in Cole's muscular, arms. Then, even when it's obvious that someone has a major grudge against her and she is in real danger, she stupidly goes out to a bar by herself to meet her sister-in-law. Jeez! This woman is just too stupid to live!

Now I'm sure you are wondering why Cole was going back to her house with her since she accused him of trying to shoot her. Well, this is a romantic suspense novel so the romance is just as important, if not more so, than the mystery. Personally, I did not find the romance between them believable because there was absolutely no trust there-- she thinks he shot her and he thinks she was having an affair. However, their relationship isn't built on trust, it is built on sex. So we have to suffer through lots of paragraphs of Eve and Cole lusting after each other, and Eve and Cole falling into bed together, and Eve remembering their passionate lovemaking, and Eve coming close to making passionate love with him again but then pulling back and declaring she can't because it's not a good idea because she saw him shoot her even though he assures her that he didn't. Which reminds me, his reason for not telling the truth about what happened on the night she was shot seems just absolutely stupid to me-- as well as the fact that even though he was a successful attorney before Eve was shot, he ended up in poverty because of his legal expenses afterwards even though the prosecutor declined to prosecute the case. As you can tell, I didn't particularly like either one of them very much-- in fact the only character in the book I did like was Kristy, the daughter of one of the police detectives investigating the murders.

I listened to the audio version of this book and since I'm laying all my cards on the table, I'll add that Joyce Bean, the reader, way overdid the southern accents to the point that it was distracting-- I felt like I was listening to Scarlett O'Hara. That wasn't possible though because Scarlett had more brains than the main character in this book.

As I said at the beginning of this review, I stuck with the book because I was interested in the underlying mystery and I wanted to find out how the stranger's sperm ended up inside of Eve. The final resolution was barely worth it-- let me just say that from reading her previous books, Jackson is consistent in picking her perpetrators and is not necessarily fair to her readers.

If you like romantic suspense, you will probably like this much more than I did. But if, like me, you are reading more for the mystery than the sex, I'd suggest you give this one a miss. I doubt I'll read another Lisa Jackson book-- this one was just too painful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent military thriller
"Ultimatum" was R.J. Pineiro's second published techno-thriller.Unlike his more recent novels that deal with the computer/high tech industry, this novel is a military thriller that takes place soon after Desert Storm.Saddam Hussein has nuclear missiles and is readying them for deployment against neighboring countries and U.S. troops stationed in the area.

The central figure, Lt. Kevin Dalton, is a fighter pilot in-training who nearly is stripped of his ability to fly due to the direct disobedience of orders. However, the CG makes an exception and gives Dalton another chance.Dalton doesn't make the best of his second chance and is soon on the run from the Iraqis. He meets a Mossad agent named Khalela and soon they join forces to locate where Hussein is producing his weapons. What ensues is a non-stop, action-filled search that concludes with a resounding climax. The door is left open for a sequel and Pineiro took advantage of that with his next novel entitled "Retribution".

While a departure from the them of his later novels, "Ultimatum" is a highly entertaining read and most of the statements regarding military weaponry, planes, etc. seem fairly accurate. If you enjoy military thrillers with little fluff, I recommend giving "Ultimatum" a read.If you find this one enjoyable, read the sequel although it's more of a spy thriller than military thriller.

5-0 out of 5 stars The first book I've read by him and I LOVED IT!!!
WOW!!! Even though I am only in eigth grade, that's what came into my mind after I finished this book. It is a really great book and if you like war and action books, read this one. It also has a touch of romance in it between the two really MAIN characters, Leutenent Dalton and Kahlela. Touching too. Trust me. You'll like it. It's AWESOME!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Exciting Book!
This book was a very good takeoff on the Gulf War. The dictator of Iraq,Saddam Hussein has secret nuclear weapons that have to be found. Thesenuclear missiles are aimed at Isreal,Iran, and American airplanes in SaudiArabia. An American named Dalton and an Isreali named Kalela are given thetask of locating these missiles. Of course a romance blossoms between thetwo. This book turns into an exciting story. This was my second book that Ihad read by Pineiro. The team of Dalton and Kalela finally locate thenuclear missiles and destroy them. They have a rough time doing so. Onceagain a good book from R.J. Pineiro. Be sure to read the sequel to thisbook,Retribution.
