That question has created numerous stories, myths, and anecdotes. The most popular is that Nobel's wife had an affair with a mathematician, usually said to be Mittag-Leffler, and in revenge Nobel refused to endow one of his prizes in mathematics. Too bad for this story that Nobel was a life-long bachelor! The other common story is that Mittag-Leffler, the leading Swedish mathematician of Nobel's time, antagonized Nobel and so Nobel gave no prize in mathematics to prevent Mittag-Leffler from becoming a winner. This story is also suspect, however, because Nobel and Mittag-Leffler had almost no contact with each other. Most likely Nobel simply never gave any thought to including mathematics among his list of prize areas.

Bass This is an area in which the AMS did not organizationally decide to move but in some sense was gradually moved into it by external developments, developments that reflect the broader growth of our professional community. Historically, mathematicians' involvement in K-12 education was usually seen as episodic. Certain mathematicians chose to turn their interests and reflections in those directions, just as mathematicians might become interested in philosophy or poetry or music. Interest in education was not treated as a movement in the field, but as something congenial with it. Those efforts were hospitably received in the mathematical community and were treated as a wholesome part of the general culture, but not as central to it. The situation is quite different now, but not because of change of individual interest or concern. A lot of it has to do with the whole interlocking dynamics of expansion of the field...

"I believe that the conference was a success," said student Shawn Bruce, who organized the details of the conference. "I was pleased with the overall turnout for a first time event. I believe that we accomplished our goal and achieved our purpose. Hopefully, we will not only enhance and maintain our new community, but we will also be a blessing and help to others." The AAAM visits different places each year to meet with successful mathematicians in various fields, Boisen said. These mathematicians help students broaden their understanding of the career opportunities in mathematics and see that teaching is not the only thing a math major can do, he said. Graduate students work with members of the organization, building a bond of trust, Boisen said. Issues that could affect performance and retention are identified early instead of too late, he said.
