   Extractions: Welcome to the web page for biographies of women in mathematics. These pages are part of an on-going project by students in mathematics classes at Agnes Scott College, in Atlanta, Georgia, to illustrate the numerous achievements of women in the field of mathematics. There are biographical essays or comments on most of the women mathematicians and some photos (which look best at more than 256 colors). Our goal is for this list to continue to expand, and for more biographies to be completed. We also welcome contributions of biographical information or essays from those outside Agnes Scott College. If you are interested in contributing an essay, please send your contribution to Larry Riddle . Comments, suggestions, or corrections can also be sent to this address. To increase awareness of women's ongoing contributions to the mathematical sciences, the Association of Women in Mathematics is sponsoring an essay contest for biographies of contemporary women mathematicians and statisticians in academic, industrial, and government careers. This contest is open to students in the following categories: Middle School, High School, Undergraduate, and Graduate. The contest deadline was November 1, 2002.     Extractions: Katherine Heinrich I'm interested in just about anything related to the existence of latin squares with particular properties (such as orthogonality, subsquares, intersection, completion) and ... just about anything related to graph decompositions. Usually decompositions of the complete graph (or complete directed graph), but more recently decompositions of regular graphs, trees, etc. Particular interests are orthogonal decompositions and the designs related to them, and decompositions of line-graphs. Other interests include edge-colouring problems with a Ramsey Theory flavour. For example, colour the edges of the complete graph and then determine the minimum number of disjoint monochromatic subgraphs of a particular type needed to cover the vertices. Making math accessible to a broad audience through public lectures and helping people discover they actually can do mathematics - and moreover that they do it regularly in their daily lives. Trying to show that mathematics is not what most people think it is. It is not memorization (I dont know any mathematician who knows more than the smallest handful of trig identities!), rules (there are many ways to reach an answer, and sometimes there are many answers) or arithmetic (we use calculators - we don't do the additions in our heads either!). Mathematics is a logical and (more often than you expect) intuitive search for patterns. Breaking down the barriers between researchers and mathematics teachers from kindergarten through university so that we can recognise our common interests in mathematics, its uses and its teachings. Encouraging men and women both to recognize that women have a place in mathematics; supporting women as mathematicians (from kindergarten on) and ensuring they are not overlooked.
