Extractions: Women in Math (WIM) is an organization at the University of Maryland College Park (UMCP). WIM is dedicated to serving the needs of women mathematicians at UMCP. In order to fulfill that purpose, WIM members have organized a number of events. Two ongoing activities are monthly lunch get-togethers and biweekly graduate women talks . We also have an electronic newsletter for our members. This WWW page is WIM's latest endeavor. It is our goal that this page will include information or links to information in the following categories: Scholarships, Conferences, etc. Women in Mathematics Women in Computer Science, Physics, or Engineering Advice for Graduate Students in Math or Other Scientific Disciplines ... Pictures are now available from the 2nd Annual WIM picnic held in June! It was a great chance for students, faculty and staff from our department to talk over sub sandwiches and watermelon.

Extractions: Professor of Mathematics at Moscow State University. Received the prized Order of Lenin in 1951. In 1959 she became the first chairperson of the newly created department of mathematical logic at Moscow State University. Olga Alexandrovna Ladyzhenskaya March 7, 1922 - Received her Ph.D. at the Leningrad State University in 1949 and her Doctorate in the Mathematics-Physical Sciences in 1953 at Moscow State University. Worked in the general areas of linear, quasilinear, and nonlinear partial (and some ordinary) differential equations of elliptic, parabolic, and hyperbolic types, with some theoretical applications to Navier-Stokes flow. Professor of Mathematics at the Physics Department at St. Petersburg University and Head of the Laboratory of Mathematical Physics at the St. Petersburg branch of the Steklov Mathematical Institute of the Russian Academy of Science. Elizaveta Fedorovna Litvinova Studied mathematics on her own in Russia. In 1872 went to Zurich to study at the Polytechnic Institute, receiving her baccalaureate in 1876, and her doctoral degree in 1878 from Bern University (despite a Russian decree in 1873 that all Russian women studying in Zurich had to return to Russia by the end of 1873.) Returned to Russia but was prevented from obtaining a teaching position. Finally accepted a post as a teacher in the lower classes of a women's academy. Published over 70 articles on the philosophy and practice of teaching mathematics. Respected as one of the foremost pedagogues in Russia.

Her purpose was to determine the complex interplay between the personal and professional lives of those women who embarked on mathematical careers during this period, with a view to understanding how changes in American society during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s affected their career development and identities as mathematicians. From interviews with female mathematicians from that period, plus research into historical and sociological documents, Murray looked at how women in mathematics develop their identity from childhood through adulthood and into retirement. These women, having few examples to follow, improvised and "followed diverse paths in their struggle to construct a professional identity in postwar America," Murray said. Murray, interviewed by the Chicago Tribune for an article about women in mathematical careers, said the growing number of female role models might help "turn the tide" for women in the future who are thinking about making a career in a mathematical field. Research for the book Women Becoming Mathematicians: Creating a Professional Identity in Post-World War II America was supported by nearly $100,000 in grants from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the Spencer Foundation, and the Center for Programs in the Humanities in the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences at Virginia Tech.

Explanation: In our math building is a bulletin board titled "This Week in Mathematics" you can see both a web version of the bulletin board and a more detailed explanation . The bulletin board has several sections: this week's cool math link, this week's birthday, this week's math problem, and our department's calendar for the week. I change the four sheets each week; that's one of my duties as our department's webmaster. I've mostly been taking the biographies from the MacTutor website. They have the biographies of 1100 famous mathematicians from history, indexed alphabetically and also chronologically. That averages around 20 per week, so I follow my own taste in choosing one of those approximately 20 for this week's birthday. I don't always choose the "best mathematician" other criteria enter into my decisions too, such as who has the most interesting biography. The purpose of the bulletin board is to attract the attention of students walking past it, and perhaps lure some of them into mathematics. It recently occurred to me that one of the other purposes is to provide role models. Consequently, it would be a good idea to give additional weight to famous mathematicians from ethnic groups that have been underrepresented in our history books and/or denied opportunities to achieve in the past. For instance, until recently, women were mostly prevented from doing mathematics, so relatively few women have become famous in mathematics. We want to end this sort of discrimination, so those few famous women mathematicians should be publicized; they provide role models and give present-day young women the message that they can become mathematicians too.
