'Al empezar el siglo XXI -siglo que ha perdido ya la esperanza de que el progreso hacia una paz y una prosperidad mundial sea inevitable-, esta nueva realidad no puede ser ignorada', dijo Annan, evocando las 'nuevas amenazas que no hacen distinciones entre razas, naciones ni regiones'. Ante esta constatación, Annan, que comparte el Nobel con la organización de la que es secretario general, anunció, en un discurso lleno de referencias religiosas al Corán, la Biblia y la Tora, las grandes orientaciones de la ONU para los decenios futuros. 'En el siglo XXI, creo que la misión de las Naciones Unidas será definida por una toma de conciencia, nueva y más profunda, del carácter sagrado y de la dignidad de cada ser humano, sea cual fuere su raza o su religión', afirmó.
