Aug. 25, 1908, Le Croisic), French physicist who discovered radioactivity through his investigations of uranium and other substances. In 1903 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Pierre and Marie Curie Electricity, magnetism, optical phenomena, and energy were major areas of physical investigation during the 19th century. For several years the young man's research was concerned with the rotation of plane-polarized light by magnetic fields, a subject opened by Michael Faraday and to which Henri's father had also contributed. Henri then concerned himself with infrared radiation, examining, among other things, the spectra of different phosphorescent crystals under infrared stimulation. Of particular significance, he extended the work of his father by studying the relation between absorption of light and emission of phosphorescence in some uranium compounds. Systematic study of radiation.

Among a variety of luminescent crystals, Becquerel found that only those containing uranium emitted radiation naturally. This significant discovery opened the way to nuclear physics. He subsequently discovered that the radiations of radium comprise electrons, and he was the first to supply experimental evidence of the phenomenon of radioactive transformation. He was elected to the Academy of Sciences (1889) and appointed professor of physics at the Museum of Natural History (1892) and the Ecole Polytechnique (1895). E. Extractions: This article will focus on the efforts of four scientists: Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, Antoine Henri Becquerel, Marie Sklodowska Curie, and Ernest Rutherford. It emphasizes their contributions to the elucidation of radioactivity and the "key" experiments they performed pertaining to their discoveries. The biographies and photographs are adapted from The Health Physics Society Centennial Calendar by permission of the Health Physics Society. Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen (1845-1923) On November 8, 1895, at the University of Wurzburg, Wilhelm Roentgen's attention was drawn to a glowing fluorescent screen on a nearby table. Roentgen immediately determined that the fluorescence was caused by invisible rays originating from the partially evacuated glass Hittorf-Crookes tube he was using to study cathode rays (i.e., electrons). Surprisingly, these mysterious rays penetrated the opaque black paper wrapped around the tube. Roentgen had discovered X rays, a momentous event that instantly revolutionized the field of physics and medicine. However, prior to his first formal correspondence to the University Physical-Medical Society, Roentgen spent two months thoroughly investigating the properties of X rays. Silvanus Thompson complained that Roentgen left "little for others to do beyond elaborating his work." For his discovery, Roentgen received the first Nobel Prize in physics in 1901. When later asked what his thoughts were at the moment of his discovery, he replied "I didn't think, I investigated. "It was the crowning achievement in a career beset by more than its share of difficulties.

Extractions: Contribution to the Development of the Atomic Concept Becquerel discovered the radioactivity of uranium by accident. Searching for a connection between X rays (recently discovered by Roentgen) and phosphorescence, he placed a covered photographic plate next to a phosphorescent uranium salt. The plate became exposed even though it had an opaque cover and therefore was not subject to any light. Becquerel established that some of the radiation emitted by the uranium was deflected by a magnet, unlike X rays; also, the radiation was emitted by all uranium salts, whether phosphorescent or not. His discoveries led to the receipt of the Nobel Prize in physics for 1903 (shared with Marie and Pierre Curie).

Henri Becquerel was there and decides to study the existence of a possible relation between the fluorescence phenomena and those famous X rays. He was studying the fluorescence of uranium salts. Once exposed to the light of sun (thus to UV photons) those salts can radiate visible light: this is what is called fluorescence. He carried thus his uranium salts under the sun, than placed against photographic plates covered with black strong paper. The development of the plates showed that uranium salts radiated also X rays, the only known radiation capable of impressing the plates through black paper. Fluorescent materials be also X rays sources?

Extractions: Antoine Henri Becquerel was born into a family that already had a reputation for studying science. His father and grandfather were both famous French physicists. He went to school at the (Technical School) where he learned about the sciences. (Museum of Natural History) in Paris. This was exciting for him because both his father and his grandfather had held this postition before him. In 1903, he won the Nobel Prize for his discovery of spontaneous radioactivity. He discovered this almost by accident. He had been studying how different sorts of light come from different materials that had been stimulated in different ways. One of the things he was studying was pitchblende, a kind of salt. He was using the pitchblende to be able to see x-rays. When the salt was excited by the x-rays, it gave off light. One day, he left the pitchblende out on a photographic plate by accident. When he came back to it, it had given off some light by itself! This had been recorded by the photographic plate that it was sitting on. He did some chemical tests on it and discovered that the salt had spontaneously given off its own radiation. This is a picture of the actual photographic plate that gave proof of spontaneous radioactivity.
