This accomplishment became a cornerstone of genetics and was widely regarded as one of the most important discoveries of 20th-century biology. During World War II, Crick interrupted his education to work as a physicist in the development of magnetic mines for use in naval warfare, but afterward he turned to biology at the Strangeways Research Laboratory, Cambridge University (1947). Interested in pioneering efforts to determine the three-dimensional structures of large molecules found in living organisms, he transferred to the university's Medical Research Council Unit at the Cavendish Laboratories in 1949. In 1951, when the American biologist James Watson arrived at the laboratory, it was known that the mysterious nucleic acids, especially DNA, played a central role in the hereditary determination of the structure and function of each cell. Watson convinced Crick that knowledge of DNA's three-dimensional structure would make its hereditary role apparent. Using the X-ray diffraction studies of DNA done by Wilkins, Watson and Crick were able to construct a molecular model consistent with the known physical and chemical properties of DNA. The model consisted of two intertwined helical (spiral) strands of sugar-phosphate, bridged horizontally by flat organic bases. Watson and Crick theorized that if the strands were separated, each would serve as a template (pattern) for the formation, from small molecules in the cell, of a new sister strand identical to its former partner. These scientists are known as Dr. Francis Harry Compton Crick and Dr. James Dewey Watson. Francis Harry Compton Crick was born on June 8, 1916 in Northampton, England. He is the elder son of Harry Crick and Annie Elizabeth Wilkins. His brother A.F. Crick is a doctor in New Zealand. At the age of 24, Francis Harry Compton Crick married Ruth Doreen Dodd. They had a son Michael F.C. Crick who is also a scientist. The marriage however only lasted seven years, from 1940-1947. Two years later in 1949, Francis Crick married Odile Speed. They are currently and have two daughters, Gabrielle and Jacqueline Crick and reside in a home named "The Golden Helix." Francis Crick's education began at Northampton Grammar School and Mill Hill School in London. He studied physics at University College in London and received a B.Sc. in 1937. He tried to pursue a Ph.D. but was prevented because of the-war in 1939. Then finally in 1954, he received his Ph.D. at Caius College in Cambridge and worked on a thesis called "X-ray diffraction: polypeptides and proteins." In 1951, Francis Crick met James Dewey Watson, who was 23 years of age. This is when worked together on the DNA molecule's structure discovering it as the double helix.

    Extractions: Using Wilkins's and others' discoveries, Crick and Watson postulated that DNA consists of a double helix consisting of two parallel chains of alternate sugar and phosphate groups linked by pairs of organic bases. They built molecular models which also explained how genetic information could be coded - in the sequence of organic bases. Crick and Watson published their work on the proposed structure of DNA in 1953. Later Crick, this time working with South African Sydney Brenner, demonstrated that each group of three adjacent bases (he called a set of three bases a codon) on a single DNA strand codes for one specific amino acid. He also helped to determine codons that code for each of the 20 main amino acids. Furthermore, he formulated the adaptor hypothesis, according to which adaptor molecules mediate between messenger RNA and amino acids. These adaptor molecules are now known as transfer RNAs.
