I decided to be the man of action rather than the philosopher, and resolved to graduate in veterinary science and pursue a research career. At this stage I was just 17 years old, and would probably have made a very different decision if I had been more mature. When I graduated, I was contracted (under the terms of a "bonded" scholarship) to work for several years in the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Stock. I expressed enthusiasm for laboratory-based research, so the Department immediately sent me to the country as a rural veterinary officer. I spent some months driving large distances to post-mortem cattle and pigs that had died of unknown causes, and to survey cattle for various venereal diseases. This resulted in the diagnosis of Trichomoniasis in an area where it was thought that complete eradication had been achieved. Realizing that I was a danger to their regulatory effort, the Department quickly brought me back to the state veterinary laboratory, the Animal Research Institute (ARI), Yeerongpilly. My task was to conduct a large-scale, externally-funded experiment on the epidemiology of bovine leptospirosis. This project involved injecting several cows with Leptospira pomona

Extractions: NOBEL LAUREATE IN IMMUNOLOGY TO KICK OFF VMRCVM'S NEW HORIZONS SPEAKER SERIES OCTOBER 2 BLACKSBURG, Sept. 26, 19971996 Nobel Laureate Dr. Peter C. Doherty will present an address entitled "Cell-Mediated Immunity in Virus Infections" at the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine on Thursday, October 2 at 7:30 p.m. in the College Center. Doherty holds the Michael F. Tamer Chair of Biomedical Research and serves as chairman of the Department of Immunology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He is also professor of pediatrics and pathology at the University of Tennessee. His pioneering work in cellular immunology has provided important insights regarding T-Cell initiation of the body's immune response, work that has extraordinary implications for autoimmune diseases, organ transplantation, graft rejection and vaccine design. Doherty's lecture kicks off the VMRCVM's six-week " New Horizons in Veterinary Medicine Speaker Series ," which has been produced in honor of Virginia Tech's 125th Anniversary Celebration "Our institution is nationally recognized for academic programs which prepare veterinarians for work in "non-traditional" areas of veterinary medicine," said Eyre. "Many of these speakers will showcase some of these emerging ways in which this profession is serving society, and we are delighted they have agreed to be a part of the series."

Extractions: Dr. Peter Doherty, St. Jude Hospital Immunologist, wins Nobel Prize (Memphis, Tennessee , October 7, 1996 Peter C. Doherty, Ph.D., and Rolf M. Zinkernagel, M.D., immunologists whose experiments revolutionized the field by explaining the mechanism of T-cell recognition in cell-mediated immunity, have won the 1996 Nobel Prize for Medicine. Dr. Doherty is chairman of the immunology department at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis and Dr. Zinkernagel is professor and director of the Institute of Experimental Immunology at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. Drs. Doherty and Zinkernagel discovered T cells simultaneously recognize MHC self-protein and a foreign antigen on the surface of virally infected cells. Their discovery of MHC Restriction of T-Cell Recognition opened the door to an understanding of the immune system that has impacted autoimmune disease research, vaccine design, organ transplantation and the understanding of immune surveillance. Drs. Doherty and Zinkernagel began working together in 1973 at the Australian National University in Canberra. Dr. Doherty joined St. Jude Hospital in 1988.
