Extractions: Niels Ryberg Finsen In 1882 Finsen went to Copenhagen to study medicine, taking his final examination in 1890. The same year he also became prosector of anatomy at the University of Copenhagen, a post he left in 1893 in order to be able to devote more time to his scientific work. He still went on with private tutoring of medical students, thus gaining a very moderate income for his living. Already from 1883 and probably several years earlier he suffered from an illness which turned out to be Pick's disease and is characterized by progressive thickening of the connective tissue of certain membranes in the liver, the heart and the spleen. This results in impairment of the functions of these organs. As time went on, symptoms of heart trouble developed in addition to the general weakness and ascites, so that Finsen became more and more of an invalid. His last years had to be spent in a wheel-chair and his ascites had to be tapped no less than 18 times - often as much as 6 litres of fluid were withdrawn. That he in spite of this was able to make his remarkable contributions to medicine tells of a strong will and great energy. He has himself given the following short description of his work.

While a student at the University of Copenhagen (M.D., 1890), Finsen became interested in the effects of light on living organisms and in 1893 found that lengthy exposure of smallpox sufferers to the red light formed by exclusion of the violet end of the spectrum prevents the suppuration of the pustules, or formation of characteristic pockmarks. Aware of the bacteria-destroying effects of sunlight, he developed an ultraviolet treatment for lupus vulgaris, a form of skin tuberculosis, which met with great success. Although phototherapy has largely been superseded by other forms of radiation and drug therapy, Finsen's work did much to encourage the radiation therapy then being developed and led to the use of ultraviolet sterilization techniques in bacteriological research. Finsen's Medical Light Institute (now the Finsen Institute) was founded in Copenhagen in 1896.

Extractions: Finsen, Niels Ryberg (1860-1904), Danish physician and Nobel Prize winner who made important discoveries regarding the use of light waves in the treatment of disease. Finsen was born in Tórshavn, the capital of the Faeroe Islands, a part of Denmark located north of the British Isles. After completing his early schooling in Denmark and in Reykjavík, Iceland, Finsen attended the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, receiving his medical degree in 1891. He then taught anatomy in the university's Department of Surgery, leaving in 1893 to devote himself full-time to studying "phototherapy," or the therapeutic effects of light. In 1896 he established the Light Institute in Copenhagen. For his groundbreaking contributions to the new field of phototherapy, Niels Finsen received the 1903 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine.

Extractions: Jens Christian Skou Niels Ryberg Finsen, 1860-1904, Danish physician. As a young man, Finsen already suffered from a serious heart condition, which meant that he had to give up any thought of practising after qualifying in 1890. He was appointed assistant lecturer in anatomy at Copenhagen University, where he started some highly successful research into the effect of light on certain skin diseases. In 1893 he attracted attention in Denmark with a dissertation on red light and its beneficial effect on smallpox. Two years later, Finsen made the great breakthrough that established his international reputation by introducing the revolutionary carbon arc treatment (Finsen's Therapy) of lupus (lupus vulgaris). The following year he established a light institute, subsequently The Finsen Institute, in Copenhagen. In 1898 he became a titular professor. Finsen was the first Danish doctor to receive the Nobel Prize for Physiology/Medicine, in 1903, for his unique research into treatment with ultraviolet rays.
