He proved to be a good researcher so joined research department of St Mary's Hospital, London in 1906. He was to spend his entire working life here. Horrified by his experiences in France in WW1 he swore to find medicines which would alleviate infection of wounds. In 1928 an unwashed and bacterially infected flask appeared to be disinfected by mould which had grown from airborne spores. Penicillin's use in combating bacterium had been discovered. Strangely Fleming didn't follow up his discovery after publishing his results in 1929. From his initial work antibiotics were developed and added to the weapons at the hands of doctors. Millions of people worldwide owe there lives to Sir Alexander's discovery. Fleming was knighted in 1944 and won the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1945. Extractions: - Sir Alexander Fleming (1881-1955) Born at Lochfield Farm near Darvel, in Ayrshire, Fleming moved to London when he was 13, after the death of his father. He worked as a shipping clerk for five years and then became a medical student at St Mary's in Paddington, part of London University. He was a brilliant student and after graduation he joined the bacteriology lab at St Mary's, under Almroth Wright. During the First World War, Fleming saw at first hand the failure of current antiseptics to treat infected wounds and after the war he returned to St Mary's to find a solution to the problem. Initially, he developed the use of antityphoid vaccines and discovered lysozyme which had some limited use as a food preservative. In 1928 he discovered that a culture of staphylococcus bacteria had been accidentally infected by an airborne mould which had destroyed the bacteria. This was to transform the treatment of infected wounds with penicillin. The difficulties of developing the fragile substance commercially meant that it took 15 years before it could be produced in large quantities but two Oxford biochemists Howard Florey and Ernst Chan succeeded. Initial supplies were used exclusively by the armed forces and undoubtedly saved thousands of lives. Fleming was knighted in 1944 and Fleming, Florey and Chan received the Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine in 1945. Fleming did not patent penicillin, hoping that this would help to develop the product as a cheap and effective drug.

Alexander Fleming enrolled in Kilmarnock Academy on 28 August 1894. The son of a farmer, he was born at Lochfield, a farm near Darvel to the east of Kilmarnock. At the time Kilmarnock Academy was the Higher Class school for most of north and east Ayrshire and so it was there he was sent to complete his education. The entry in McDougall's New Admission Register arranged to meet regulations of Scotch Education Department, Dated 26th March 1887, still held in Kilmarnock Academy, records: SUCCESSIVE NUMBER (ON ADMISSION OR RE-ADMISSION) 2203 DATE OF ADMISSION OR RE-ADMISSION (YEAR/MONTH/DAY) 94/8/28 NAME IN FULL: CHRISTIAN AND SURNAME Alex. Text Only 1955: Farewell to scientist who discovered penicillin Sir Alexander Fleming - the man who first discovered the life-saving drug penicillin - has died of a heart attack. He was 73. Sir Alexander died suddenly at his home in London. He was married only two years ago to Dr Amalia Coutsouris, from Athens, who worked at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington. His first wife, with whom he had a son, died in 1949. For many years, Sir Alexander was Professor of Bacteriology in the University of London and until last year was head of the Wright-Fleming Institute of Micro-Biology at St Mary's hospital, Paddington. The young scientist served in a battlefield hospital laboratory in France during World War I. When he saw how many soldiers were dying from infections he became determined to find a cure. His first notable discovery was lysozyme in 1922. It is a naturally-occurring antibacterial substance, found in tears and other body fluids.

Fleming was educated in Darvel and Kilmarnock, before moving to London where he entered St. Mary's Medical School in the University of London. In 1928, he discovered the world's first antibiotic drug - Penicillin. This was as a result of an "accident" where mould was allowed to grow on a bacterial culture. In the same year, he was appointed to a Chair in St. Mary's Medical School. A prodigious scientist, Fleming was widely honoured, including a knighthood (1944) and the a Nobel Prize for Medicine (1945). Fleming is buried in St. Paul's Cathedral (London).
