Two years later his family emigrated to the United States to settle at Virginia City, Nevada, but they eventually moved to San Francisco where Michelson received his early education in public schools, matriculating from the High School in 1869. He was appointed by President Grant to the U.S. Naval Academy and, after graduation as Ensign in 1873 and a two-years' cruise in the West Indies, he became an instructor in physics and chemistry at the Academy under Admiral Sampson. In 1879, he was posted to the Nautical Almanac Office, Washington, to work with Simon Newcomb, but in the following year, he obtained leave of absence to continue his studies in Europe. He visited the Universities of Berlin and Heidelberg Clark University, Worcester, Massachusetts , and in 1892 he became Professor of Physics and the first Head of Department at the new University of Chicago . He rejoined the Navy during World War I, and in 1918 returned to Chicago where in 1925 he was appointed to the first of the Distinguished Service Professorships. Albert Michelson, the first chair of Physics Department at Clark University at Worcester, was the first to accurately measure the speed of light. Albert A. Michelson was the first Nobel laureate of the University of Chicago for his measurements of the speed of light. It was at Clark University that Michelson conducted fundamental research leading to the determination of an international standard of measurement, the meter, in terms of a natural constant, the wave length of cadmium light. His numerous contributions to the physics of light included the invention of optical precision instruments, many of which he used in experiments that marked the beginning of modern physics.

At 17, Michelson entered the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md and graduated in 1873. Early on Michelson was fascinated with the sciences and the problem of measuring the speed of light in particular. After two years of studies in Europe he resigned from the navy in 1881 and set out to determine the speed of light with an unprecedented accuracy using his interferometer. His value remained the best for a generation and when it was improved, Michelson was the one who did it. In 1883 he accepted a position as professor of physics at the Case School of Applied Science in Cleveland and concentrated on improving his interferometer. By 1887 with the help of his colleague Edward Williams Morley he conducted what was to be known as the Michelson-Morley experiment. Their experiment showed that there was no significant motion of the Earth relative to the ether , the hypothetical medium in which light waves were supposed to travel. This result later became the foundation of Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

V roce 1887 v Clevelandu tento pokus s ještì vìtší pøesností zopakoval. V roce 1899 se oženil s Ednou Stantonovou. Mìl jednoho syna a 3 dcery. Michelson prokázal skuteènost, že se svìtlo šíøí všemi smìry stejnou rychlostí nezávisle na pohybu jeho zdroje. Pro svùj pokus si Michelson zkonstruoval pøístroj – interferometr, pomocí kterého provedl i jiná významná mìøení. V roce 1892 se stal profesorem fyziky na nové universitì v Chicagu 1892 – 1893 pomocí interferometru srovnával délku metru s délkou svìtelné vlny a zkoumal strukturu spektrálních èar. Pozdìji sestrojil také hvìzdný interferometr, který umožòoval mìøit úhlové prùmìry hvìzd. 1923 – 1927 - prezident národní akademie vìd USA.

While in Europe, Michelson began constructing an interferometer, a device designed to split a beam of light in two, send the parts along perpendicular paths, then bring them back together. If the light waves had, in the interim, fallen out of step, interfererence fringes of alternating light and dark bands would be obtained. From the width and number of those fringes, unprecedently delicate measurements could be made, comparing the velocity of light rays travelling at right angles to each other.
