Extractions: Museo Gabriela Mistral de Vicuña Este Museo, dedicado a la vida y obra de la poetisa chilena y Premio Nobel de Literatura 1945, Gabriela Mistral (1889- 1957), fue construido en el huerto de su antigua casa natal. Allí se inauguró en 1971 la réplica de su casa, ambientada en la época en que Gabriela Mistral vivía en ella. Interior del Museo Conserva alrededor de 1.100 piezas relativas a la obra y vida de la poetisa: premios, cartas, muebles y otros objetos personales de ella, además de una importante colección de fotografías. Compuesta por 2.500 títulos aproximadamente, entre los cuales se destaca la biblioteca personal de Gabriela Mistral, donada por ella misma a la ciudad para formar la primera biblioteca pública de Vicuña, y todas sus obras, tanto las que ella publicó en vida como las que se editaron después de su muerte. Consta también de textos y publicaciones de estudio y crítica relativas a su vida y obra, asi como de libros de índole general. Esta Biblioteca está abierta a todo tipo de usuarios. Celebración anual del natalicio (7 de abril) y del otorgamiento del Premio Nobel de Literatura (10 de diciembre) a Gabriela Mistral.

E n uno de sus poemas Gabriela Mistral escribió: "Todas íbamos a ser reinas de cuatro reinos sobre el mar." Las demás no lo fueron, ella sí, su madre lo supo desde siempre y alguna vez tuvo que enfrentarse a la maestra de su hija cuando fue requerida en el colegio para recibir una recomendación acerca de Gabriela: la niña era una retrasada mental, no hablaba, no gritaba y no jugaba; era evidente su retraso y por tal motivo no era conveniente su permanencia en esa escuela, debía ser inscrita en un colegio especial. La madre de Gabriela, Petronila Alcayaga, se ofendió tanto y sentenció: "Se equivoca usted. Algún día mi hija llegará a ser algo y usted oirá hablar de ella". Y no se equivocó ni un poco. Es 1914 el año que puede considerarse como el del despegue definitivo de su carrera literaria, ¿la razón?: Los Juegos Florales de Santiago, edición que gana Gabriela con Los sonetos de la muerte, poemas que se incluirían en 1922 en su libro Desolación, publicado en Nueva York por el Instituto de las Españas.

The mystery of childbearing, the sorrow of a tragic love, and a burning desire for justice are recurrent themes of her fluent and lyric verse. The early Sonetos de la muerte sonnets of death ] (1915) is considered one of her finest achievements. Tala (1938), and Lagar (1954) are three of her major volumes. Selected Poems, translated by Langston Hughes, was published in 1957. In 1945, Mistral received the Nobel Prize in Literature, the first Latin American to be so honored. See studies by M. C. Sus padres fueron Juan Jerónimo Godoy y Petronila Alcayaga, quienes la bautizaron con el nombre de Lucila. 1892 Lucila tiene tres años cuando su padre abandona la familia y se dedica a recorrer tierras. 1904 Colabora en el periódico Coquimbo, de La Serena, utilizando los seudónimos de "Alguien", "Soledad" y "Alma". 1905 A los quince años empieza a trabajar, ejerciendo una ayudantía en la Escuela de La Compañía, aldea vecina a Vicuña. 1906 Tiene 17 años. Conoce a Romelio Ureta, empleado de Ferrocarriles, quien fue el amor de su vida. Durante este período, Lucila sirve una plaza de maestra en la escuela de La Cantera. 1907 Escribe para los periódicos La Voz de Elqui y La Reforma. 1908 Figura en la antología Literatura Coquimbana de L. Carlos Soto Ayala, en la cual éste le dedica un breve estudio y selecciona tres prosas poéticas de la autora: "Ensoñación", "Junto al mar" y "Carta íntima". 1909 El 25 de noviembre, a los 26 años de edad, se suicida en Coquimbo Romelio Ureta. En sus bolsillos se encontró una tarjeta con el nombre de Lucila Godoy. Ella es inspectora en el Liceo de Señoritas de La Serena.

It discusses some of the difficulties she had as a female poet and explores the ways in which she made a niche for her poetry from which she was able to expand her readership and the themes of her poetry. Most notably, this book looks at Mistral's poetry as that of a woman who was consciously trying to find a readership starting from the limited topics readily accepted for a woman to be concerned aboutchildren and the home.
