   Extractions: Sir Robert Robinson was born at Rufford, near Chesterfield, Derbyshire on September 13th, 1886, the son of William Bradbury Robinson, a surgical dressing manufacturer who invented his own machines for the production of lint, bandages, etc., and the cardboard boxes for packaging them. He was educated at the Chesterfield Grammar School, Fulneck School, near Leeds, and at Manchester University where he graduated B.Sc. in 1906 and D.Sc. in 1910. In 1912, he was appointed the first Professor of Pure and Applied Organic Chemistry in the University of Sydney . He returned to Britain in 1915 to take the Chair in Organic Chemistry at the University of Liverpool until 1920 when he accepted an appointment as Director of Research at the British Dyestuffs Corporation. One year later, he became Professor of Chemistry at St. Andrews

   Extractions: Robert Robinson was born in September 1886 and was educated at Manchester University, coming to Magdalen College as Waynflete Professor of Chemistry in 1930; he remained in post until his retirement in 1955, when he became an Honorary Fellow. His Nobel Prize was awarded in 1947 for his work in organic chemistry. He was President of the Royal Society between 1945 and 1950. He died in February 1975. Robinson's first Chair was awarded him at the University of Sydney, New South Wales at the age of 26 and before arriving at Magdalen (where he was to remain for a quarter of a century) he had occupied four other chairs, in addition to a post in industry. Robinson made important contributions in three distinct and diverse areas of organic chemistry; in chemical theory, in the way that chemical processes occur in plants which are not reproducible in the laboratory and in the structure of natural products. He used to devise ingenious methods of chemical synthesis. He published over 500 papers. He was noted for intense energy and a restlessness of spirit. After obtaining his doctorate from Victoria University of Manchester in 1910, Robinson taught at various British universities before being appointed to the Waynflete chair of chemistry at the University of Oxford in 1930, from which he retired in 1955. He was knighted in 1939. Robinson conducted research on the structure and synthesis of many different organic compounds. His early studies of plant pigments enabled him to synthesize anthocyanins and flavones, but his most important studies were undertaken on alkaloids; these are complex, naturally occurring, nitrogen-containing compounds that can have profound biochemical effects on living things. Robinson's efforts to determine the chemical reactions that form alkaloids in plants led him to discover the structures of morphine (1925) and strychnine (1946). He also formulated a qualitative electronic theory of the structure of organic molecules. His research played a role in the synthesis of penicillin and of certain antimalarial drugs as well.

He was educated at the Chesterfield Grammar School, Fulneck School, near Leeds, and at Manchester University where he graduated B. Sc. in 1906 and D. Sc. in 1910. Robinson's extensive researches in organic chemistry have dealt not only with the structure and synthesis of many organic bodies, but also with the electrochemical mechanism of organic reactions. His interest in the chemical constitution of plant dyestuffs soon extended to another group of vegetable bodies, the alkaloids, where the whole series of his researches are remarkable for their brilliant syntheses. He contributed greatly towards the definition of the arrangement of atoms within molecules of morphine, papaverine, narcotine, etc. These discoveries led to the successful production of certain antimalarial drugs scientific papers. In 1912 Sir Robert married Gertrude Maud Walsh, a fellow student at Manchester University. She died in 1954; they had one son and one daughter. In 1957, he married Stearn Sylvia Hillstrom of New York.
