Extractions: , an antiferromagnet on which he had done optic experiments. This started a fruitful cooperation on magnetic phase diagrams, which eventually brought me into the field of critical phenomena. Encouraged by , who had pioneered the critical-phenomena effort in our Laboratory, I focused on the bicritical and tetracritical behavior and finally on the random-field problem. These were most enjoyable years, during which so many patient colleagues taught me physics. I left them with some regret, when I ventured with Gerd to discover new shores. We found them. Thank you, Gerd. In 1974/75, I spent a sabbatical year with Professor Vince Jaccarino and Dr. Alan King at the University of California in Santa Barbara, to get a taste of nuclear magnetic resonance. We solved a specific problem on the bicritical point of MnF , their home-base material. We traded experience, NMR and critical phenomena. Rose-Marie and I also took the opportunity at the beginning and end of my sabbatical to show the USA to our two daughters, Doris and Ellen, on two extended camping trips from coast to coast.

Extractions: Nobel Scientist Launches Distinguished Lecture Series August 21, 1997 On June 16, Nobel-Prize-winning physicist Dr. Heinrich Rohrer spoke to a capacity audience in NSF's largest conference room on "The Nanometer Age: Challenges and Changes." In introducing the first in the Engineering Directorate's (ENG) Distinguished Lecture Series, Dr. Ken Chong, chair of the lecture series and program director in the Civil and Mechanical Systems Division , said the aim of the series was to encourage "cross-fertilization of ideas and to educate ourselves." The Swiss-born Rohrer, a researcher at International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) , joined IBM's Zurich Research Laboratory in 1963. In 1986 he shared a Nobel Prize for the invention of the scanning tunneling microscope. Rohrer spoke about developments in the increasing miniaturization of production to the molecular level. Known as "nanotechnology," the process of building ordinary objects molecule by molecule has been studied since Nobel laureate Richard Feynman outlined the idea in a speech in 1959.
Extractions: Media Advisory - June 4, 1997 PA/M 97-24 Nobel Laureate Heinrich Rohrer, inventor of the scanning tunneling microscope, will inaugurate a new National Science Foundation engineering lecture series with a talk titled The Nanometer Age: Challenges and Chances. Rohrer will discuss recent advances in precision nanoscale science and technology, which will permit building things molecule by molecule and heralding a class of made-to-order materials with streamlined structures and properties. Ultra-precise medical instruments could permit surgeons to operate on individual cells. Materials dozens of times stronger than steel of the same weight could be produced. The ability to manipulate molecules would greatly contribute to an emerging field of science that explores how to arrange conditions so that atoms spontaneously assemble into specific molecular structures. Rohrer and Gerd Binnig received the King Faisal Prize and the Hewlett Packard Europhysics Prize in 1984, and the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1986. Rorher was inducted into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1994. He joined IBM's Zurich research laboratory in 1963. For more information about the lecture and Rohrer, see:
