Quite early in his career Salam realised the isolation and helplessness that scientists from developing countries feel when they are working in their own countries. From 1957 onwards Salam had a goal to establish an Institute where scientists from developing countries can come for visits and interact with their counterparts from advanced countries to mutual benefit. It was due to his untiring efforts and persistence that the International Center for Theoretical Physics was set up in 1960 at Trieste. Abdus Salam remained its Director from 1964 till shortly before his death on November 21, 1996. Abdus Salam emphasised the importance of education and research in pure science as a tool for development. He disagreed with the prevelant notion that developing countries should buy or import technology and need not spend money on research. He thought that this will perpetuate the dependence of these countries on the technologically advanced countries.

Apart from wide reaching contributions to particle physics, and in particular quantum field theory, Salam also won a number of prizes for his peace work. Being born in Pakistan, but living in the West for much of his life, gave Salam a remarkable perspective on world relations, and he used the respect he had earned through physics to further his vision, most noticeably in the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and in putting atomic energy to peaceful use. Yet, any writing about this man which did not concentrate on his scientific achievements would be misleading. It is fitting that Salam would work on all four of the fundamental forces at sometime in his career. He cut his teeth, in the 1960s, on the strong interaction, and was later to turn his attention to the notoriously difficult problem of unifying gravitation with the other four forces. Although he failed, like all others who have tried, he laid down much of the maths necessary for handling a possible solution- superstrings. But his greatest achievement, for which he won the Nobel Prize in 1979 along with Weinberg and Glashow, was the unification of the weak and electromagnetic forces. This led to the prediction of three particles which had been discovered at CERN earlier that year. JA

He was educated in Pakistan and received his Ph.D. in Theoretical Physics from the University of Cambridge, Cambridge, England in 1952. He has served on the faculties of the Punjab University, the Institute for Advanced Study, Cambridge University, and the Imperial College, London. Beginning with his Ph.D. thesis in 1952, which was a major contribution to the theory of renormalization, Salam has been a significant figure in the development of the theory of elementary particles. He predicted the existence of weak neutral currents and the W and Z particles before they were discovered experimentally. Independent works by Salam, Sheldon Glashow, and Steven Weinberg, which resulted in the unification of weak and electromagnetic forces, were recognized with the award of the Nobel Prize in Physics to the three in 1979. Salam and Jogesh Pati have suggested the unification of the electroweak and strong nuclear forces, one of whose predictions, the decay of the proton, is now the object of major experimental investigations in several laboratories throughout the world. Salam continues to be interested in unifying all fundamental forces of nature. When he was the head of the Theoretical Physics Department at the Imperial College (London) many students, including several presently well-known physicists, received their Ph.D.s under his guidance. In his role as the Director of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Salam has been a leader in bringing together theoretical physicists from all over the world, but in particular from the underdeveloped and developing nations. The emphasis of the Centre is to provide assistance and encouragement to physicists from the developing countries in carrying out their research projects. The Centre has become a channel through which physicists from the western nations can give aid and assistance to colleagues from the developing nations. Salam has frequently challenged western physicists to do more to aid struggling physicists from other countries.

In this capacity, he was a member of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission and a member of the Scientific Commission of Pakistan and was Chief Scientific Adviser to the President from 1961 to 1974. The following excerpt from a paper intended for the Islamic Summit held in Kuwait in January 1987 is representative of his views. “In the conditions of modern life, the rule is absolute; the race which does not value trained intelligence is doomed ... Born in the town of Jhang in the Punjab, now in Pakistan, in 1926, and educated in Lahore and then at Cambridge, where he completed his doctoral degree, Abdus Salam was quickly acknowledged as a rising star and advanced rapidly to becoming one of the leaders in his discipline. After three years of teaching in Lahore, Abdus Salam moved back to the United Kingdom, first to Cambridge as lecturer and then to Imperial College of the London University as professor. His stint in Pakistan having convinced him of the difficulties of doing science in the newly-independent countries, Abdus Salam became in time one of the leading advocates in international forums of the importance of developing science in the Third World, a cause that occupied him even more after the Nobel Prize. In 1964, Abdus Salam founded with the support of the International Atomic Agency the International Centre for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy. With a mandate to encourage and support scientists working in the Third World and provide them an opportunity to interact with the best scientists from advanced nations, Abdus Salam's leadership ensured that this Centre became firmly established as one of the major centres of theoretical physics in the world. Abdus Salam's firm internationalism made the ICTP, in the years of the Cold War, an important common meeting point for scientists from both East and West. Apart from seeking to spread the ICTP model, a task in which he was partially successful, another of Abdus Salam's unique initiatives in later years was the founding of a special programme for developing mathematics and physics in Africa.

He was born on 29 January 1926 in Jhang in the Punjab in what was then India, the son of a clerk in the office of the Inspector of Schools. At age 14, he entered Government College, Lahore, breaking all records in the matriculation examination. He continued in like fashion, winning an unprecedented succession of prizes and scholarships, through the B.A. courses in both English and Mathematics, ending by taking his M.A. in Mathematics from Lahore in June 1946. That summer, Salam won a scholarship to Cambridge. St John's had been expecting another student from India, who had intended to do research in English Literature, but he withdrew in August. The Indian High Commission offered to nominate another student in his place and the College said that it would prefer an undergraduate. It was by this happenstance that Abdus Salam came to St John's. Once in Cambridge, Salam did not take long to impress his new teachers, as the recollections by Fred Hoyle which follow make clear. Salam first took the a two-year course to Part II of the Mathematical Tripos, followed by Part II of the Physics Tripos a year later, being placed in the First Class in each. In 1949 he began research in the Cavendish Laboratory. Nicholas Kemmer, one of the pioneers of theoretical elementary particle physics, later Tait Professor of Mathematical Physics in Edinburgh, was his first official research supervisor, but Kemmer put him in the direction of Paul Matthews, then a postdoctoral fellow, thus initiating a lifelong association. Matthews introduced Salam to the problems of renormalisation theory.
