   Extractions: Following his graduation from Eustis High School in 1949, Schrieffer was admitted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology , where for two years he majored in electrical engineering, then changed to physics in his junior year. He completed a bachelor's thesis on the multiple structure in heavy atoms under the direction of Professor John C. Slater. Following up on an interest in solid state physics developed while at MIT, he began graduate studies at the University of Illinois, where he immediately began research with Professor John Bardeen. After working out a problem dealing with electrical conduction on semiconductor surfaces, Schrieffer spent a year in the laboratory, applying the theory to several surface problems. In the third year of graduate studies, he joined Bardeen and Cooper in developing the theory of superconductivity, which constituted his doctoral dissertation.

Glazer will meet with Lab staff, tour the Laboratory and Cerro Grande Fire restoration sites and the nearby Valles Caldera and Bandelier National Monument. His talk, "University of California Natural Reserve System: land stewardship, science, education, information management," is at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Jemez Room of the J. Robert Oppenheimer Study Center at Technical Area 3. (Note: a badge is now required to enter the Study Center). Glazer's visit to the Lab is sponsored by the Earth and Environmental Sciences (EES) Division, the Lab's Institute for Geophysics and Planetary Physics and the Geographic Information Systems Lab. The University of California Natural Reserve System is the largest and most ecologically diverse, university-operated system of natural areas in the world. Created in 1965 by the UC Regents, the NRS currently encompasses more than 130,000 acres divided among 34 major reserves and several satellite sites located throughout California. All NRS sites support university-level teaching and research, enabling scientists to tackle long-term projects with assurance their studies will not be disturbed. The reserve system also plays an important role in public education and kindergarten through grade 12 outreach, frequently well beyond reserve boundaries, into local communities and classrooms.

Kroto to visit in 2004 Florida State University's newest visiting professor isn't just a top-notch chemistry instructor, he's also a winner of the most prestigious science award around. Sir Harold W. Kroto, who won the 1996 Nobel Prize in chemistry, will teach classes at FSU in spring 2004. He is currently a chemistry professor at Sussex University in Brighton, United Kingdom. Kroto will work with faculty and students in the chemistry department as well as others interested in nanoscience, the study and creation of tiny materials by manipulating atoms or molecules as if they were parts of a machine. Nano refers to one billionth of a specified unit. "In addition to being a world-class scientist ... he's a terrific person," said Donald Foss, dean of the FSU College of Arts and Sciences. "He's a guy just full of spark and energy. And he has a deep commitment to the education of all kids, not just of college students." Kroto will be the second Nobel laureate currently teaching at FSU. Physics scholar J. Robert Schrieffer is the other. Four other Nobel Prize winners have worked at FSU in the past.

    Extractions: p r o p h e c y The following statement was released on December 7, 2001, by 100 Nobel Prize winners to coincide with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first Nobel prizes. Although the statement began circulating among the laureates last summer, most of them signed it after September 11. The most profound danger to world Peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust. It cannot be expected, therefore, that in all cases they will be content to await the beneficence of the rich. If then we permit the devastating power of modern weaponry to spread through this combustible human landscape, we invite a conflagration that can engulf both rich and poor. The only hope for the future lies in cooperative international action, legitimized by democracy. It is time to turn our backs on the unilateral search for security, in which we seek to shelter behind walls. Instead, we must persist in the quest for united action to counter both global warming and a weaponized world.
