Yet for all the accolades lavished upon Dr.Glenn Seaborg both during his life and since his death on February 25,1999, the legacy for which he will be most remembered at Northern Michigan University is his towering stature as citizen-scholar. Born just a few miles up the road in Ishpeming on April 19, 1912, young Glenn Theodore Seaborg was every bit the normal "Yooper." Although the family sold their belongings and bought one-way train tickets to California when young Glenn was only 10 years old, he never forgot his roots nor lessened his love for the U.P. Throughout his career as a scientist of the first magnitude and a popular speaker at the most prestigious scientific gatherings, he delighted in having his introduction include the fact that he was born in Ishpeming so that he could begin his talk by telling the audience,"I can see by the looks on some of your faces that there are a few people here who donÕt know where Ishpeming is. Well, let me put your minds at ease: it Õs right next to Negaunee." Two years ago, I had the privilege of accompanying Dr. Seaborg on a visit to Washington, D.C. As we met with congressmen and senators and other government officials, he proudly announced to each, "We're Yoopers, you know "then paused to see their responses.

Background Nobel prize winner Glenn Seaborg is a many-sided man. He is one of America's great scientific geniuses and one of the world's elite in the realm of the mind. He is entirely of Swedish descent. His mother Selma Erickson came to the United States at the age of seventeen and married H.T. Seaborg, the son of Swedish immigrants. On April 19, 1912 their son Glenn was born. He early began to earn his spending-money and worked his way through college as a stevedore, fruit-packer, laboratory assistant etc. Great honors and awards have come to Dr. Seaborg. Most notable among these are the Nobel prize for chemistry, which he shared in 1951 with his colleague Professor E.M. McMillan, and the Enrico Fermi Award for his outstanding work in nuclear chemistry and leadership in scientific and educational affairs. A good introduction to this man may be found in an article from 1961 explaining his contributions in the field of man-made elements, a subject which seems to be at the core of his endeavors:

Glenn Theodore Seaborg, Nobel Laureate chemist, discoverer of 10 atomic elements including plutonium and one that now bears his name, Associate Director-at-Large of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, University Professor of Chemistry for the University of California, and co-founder and chairman of the Lawrence Hall of Science, died last night. He was 86. Seaborg's death came while he was convalescing at home. The internationally renowned chemist and educator had suffered a stroke on August 24, 1998, while in Boston for the national meeting of the American Chemical Society. At the meeting, Seaborg was named one of the "Top 75 Distinguished Contributors to the Chemical Enterprise." To say that Seaborg had a high-profile career is an understatement. He is in the Guiness Book of World Records for having the longest entry in "Who's Who in America." In addition to sharing the 1951 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with the late Edwin McMillan for research into the transuranium elements (those beyond uranium on the periodic table), Seaborg received the National Medal of Science in 1991, this nation's highest award for scientific achievement. He was a member of the Manhattan Project, Chancellor of the University of California at Berkeley (1958-1961), and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (the predecessor to today's U.S. Department of Energy) under Presidents Kennedy, Johnson, and Nixon (1961-1971). He also served as president for both the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the American Chemical Society.

He was chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, 1961-71. - Maldives MIS1995L28.34 SEACOLE, Mary (1805-1881) British nurse. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, she helped tend invalid British soldiers when she was only 12 years old. At 18 she visited her relatives in Scotland and discovered a taste for adventure. In 1836 she married Nelson's godson Edwin Horatio Seacole, but was soon widowed. Her interest in nursing started early and she went to Latin America to tend to patients with cholera, where she devised her own medicines. She also learned to tend knife and gunshot wounds. She heard about the Crimean war and immediately set out for London. Aged almost 50, she planned to go to the front to use her medical skills to save the lives of men as she had done in Kingston. However, on application to the War Office, she was turned down without explanation. She heard that Florence Nightingale was recruiting nurses but was never granted an interview. She approached the Crimean Fund but was again refused. In desperation she made her own way across 3,000 miles to the Black Sea to set up a hotel similar to the one her family had run in Jamaica. Within a few months the 'British Hotel' was selling basic provisions and wholesome food, with Mary treating the sick and injured. Like Nightingale, she believed strongly in hygiene and ventilation, and also nursed in the Crimean War (paying her own passage). Here she worked in the field and treated disease, taking a more active role than the Nightingale nurses who did more basic tasks such as undoing bandages, washing wounds, spoon feeding and comforting the dying. She was Britain's first black nurse. She was commended by Queen Victoria. On her return she wrote her autobiography.

Scheele's own experience and the subsequent developments up to our day have shown that, at the end of the 18th Century, there certainly still was enough to do for those who wanted to discover new elements.     Extractions: FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE On February 25, 1999, Dr. Glenn Theodore Seaborg died. He was 86. Dr. Seaborg, one of the great nuclear chemists of the 20th century, won the Nobel Prize in 1951 for his discovery and chemical analysis of the transuranium elements (the elements heavier than uranium). He and co-workers also discovered plutonium-238 and -239 in Gilman Hall at UC Berkeley. That building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966. Dr. Seaborg made significant contributions to the periodic table of elements. He also helped produce many lighter isotopes that have had practical applications in research, medicine and industry. In 1991, he received the National Medal of Science, America's highest award for scientific achievement. In 1997, Dr. Seaborg was "immortalized" by having the element 106 named after him. He responded, "It's a great honor because it lasts forever. One hundred years from now, or one thousand years from now, it will still be seaborgium." He performed much of his valued research at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California. He and his co-workers named the elements 97 and 98 respectively berkelium and californium. Born on April 19, 1912, Glenn Seaborg received an A.B. from UCLA in 1934 and a Ph.D. in chemistry from UC Berkeley in 1937. He joined the faculty at UC Berkeley in 1939 but left in 1942 to work on the Manhattan project. When the atomic bomb was near completion, he wrote to President Harry Truman asking him to deter dropping it on Japan. In 1946, he returned to Berkeley and began work that produced one new element after another, a truly great scientific achievement when one realizes that he and his co-workers were making new forms of matter. In 1961, President Kennedy appointed Dr. Seaborg the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, a position he held for ten years. He served as advisors to ten presidents, from Roosevelt to Bush, and supported the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.
