After preparatory university studies in 1954 at Government College in Ibadan, he continued at the University of Leeds , where, later, in 1973, he took his doctorate. During the six years spent in England, he was a dramaturgist at the Royal Court Theatre in London 1958-1959. In 1960, he was awarded a Rockefeller bursary and returned to Nigeria to study African drama. At the same time, he taught drama and literature at various universities in Ibadan, Lagos, and Ife, where, since 1975, he has been professor of comparative literature. In 1960, he founded the theatre group, "The 1960 Masks" and in 1964, the "Orisun Theatre Company", in which he has produced his own plays and taken part as actor. He has periodically been visiting professor at the universities of Cambridge , Sheffield, and Yale During the civil war in Nigeria, Soyinka appealed in an article for cease-fire. For this he was arrested in 1967, accused of conspiring with the Biafra rebels, and was held as a political prisoner for 22 months untill 1969. Soyinka has published about 20 works: drama, novels and poetry. He writes in English and his literary language is marked by great scope and richness of words.

Extractions: Nobel Lecture, December 8, 1986 A rather curious scene, unscripted, once took place in the wings of a London theatre at the same time as the scheduled performance was being presented on the actual stage, before an audience. What happened was this: an actor refused to come on stage for his allocated role. Action was suspended. A fellow actor tried to persuade him to emerge, but he stubbornly shook his head. Then a struggle ensued. The second actor had hoped that, by suddenly exposing the reluctant actor to the audience in full glare of the spotlight, he would have no choice but to rejoin the cast. And so he tried to take the delinquent actor by surprise, pulling him suddenly towards the stage. He did not fully succeed, so a brief but untidy struggle began. The unwilling actor was completely taken aback and deeply embarrassed - some of that tussle was quite visible to a part of the audience. And now let us remove some of the mystery and make that incident a little more concrete. The scene was the Royal Court Theatre, London, 1958. It was one of those Sunday nights which were given to experimentation, an innovation of that remarkable theatre manager-director, George Devine, whose creative nurturing radicalised British theatre of that period and produced later icons like John Osborne, N. F. Simpson, Edward Bond, Arnold Wesker, Harold Pinter, John Arden, etc., and even forced the then conservative British palate to sample stylistic and ideological pariahs like

Soyinka, a playwright, poet, novelist, essayist, and theater director, won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986. Some of Soyinka's writing stems from his imprisonment in his native Nigeria from 1967 to 1969 during that nation's civil war. Most of his time in prison was spent in solitary confinement. From this experience emerged his work, The Man Died Soyinka, who currently is a professor of the arts at Emory University in Atlanta, writes mainly in English, but his works are distinguished by their exploration of "the African world view" and are steeped in Yoruba mythology, imagery, and dramatic idioms. Ake , his childhood biography, and his tragic drama Death and the King's Horseman , have been acclaimed as classics.

Soyinka appeared to try to speak to the crowd, but the noise and tumult made that impossible and he was quickly escorted to a waiting car. Friends said he would go immediately to the family home of Moshood Abiola, the Nigerian opposition leader who died in custody in July. Soyinka was to meet with Abiolas family, they said. Extra security agents had been dispatched to the airport late Tuesday night because of the writers return, and security checks were more pronounced at the airport Wednesday. Soyinka, who fled Nigeria four years ago fearing an attack from the regime of the late dictator, Gen. Sani Abacha, has said he was concerned about his security once he returned to Nigeria. Soyinka recently met in New York with Nigerias new military ruler, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, who urged him to return home. Dr. Yemi Ogunbiyi, a friend of Soyinkas, said Tuesday that a large airport welcome was being planned for the playwrights return.
