Woodruff Professor of the Arts at Emory University. He currently teaches and collaborates with Theater Emory on artistic productions, creative writing, and other programs at the university.

Soyinka, 64, was welcomed home on Wednesday evening by hundreds of followers who sang freedom songs and surged to embrace him at the airport in Lagos, which is the country's commercial hub and the heart of opposition to long years of military dictatorship. "Looking at faces of people, one gets the feeling there's a lot of work to be done," Soyinka told reporters. The root of political crisis in Nigeria lies in the army's annulment of 1993 elections as Soyinka's southwestern Yoruba kinsman Moshood Abiola was poised to win. Abiola was arrested and Nigerian dictator Gen. Sani Abacha moved against his outspoken critics.

The accused face a two-count charge of "conspiracy to levy war against the federal military government of Nigeria" and "causing explosions in various parts of Nigeria." Soyinka, living in exile in the United States and Europe, vehemently denied the charges. "It's an old familiar charge that's now being dusted off to tie it in with this spate of bombings. This is a ploy to liquidate us," Soyinka, speaking from California, told CNN. Soyinka is the winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize for Literature. Although he is known for writing eloquent plays and novels depicting village life in Africa, he has focused his recent efforts on Nigerian politics. His latest book "The Open Sore of a Continent: A Personal Narrative of the Nigerian Crisis" depicts Nigerian military leader Sani Abacha as a bloodthirsty tyrant. The writer and three others were out of the country, but 11 defendants appeared in a court near Lagos, Nigeria's largest city. The defendants face the death penalty.

Soyinka has published over 40 works in a career that spans five decades including most recently Mandela's Earth and Other Poems Art, Dialogue, and Outrage Isara: A Voyage Around Essay (1989), and The Open Sore of a Continent: A Personal Narrative of the Nigerian Crisis Wole Soyinka was born on 13 July 1934 at Abeokuta, near Ibadan in western Nigeria. After preparatory university studies in 1954 at Government College in Ibadan, he continued at the University of Leeds, where, later, in 1973, he took his doctorate. During the six years spent in England, he was a dramaturgist at the Royal Court Theatre in London 1958-1959. In 1960, he was awarded a Rockefeller bursary and returned to Nigeria to study African drama. At the same time, he taught drama and literature at various universities in Ibadan, Lagos, and Ife, where, since 1975, he has been professor of comparative literature. In 1960, he founded the theatre group, "The 1960 Masks" and in 1964, the "Orisun Theatre Company", in which he has produced his own plays and taken part as actor. He has periodically been visiting professor at the universities of Cambridge, Sheffield, and Yale.

Some of us will be a lot more famous than others. It was this past Wednesday's edition of the Edmonton Journal that set me wondering about the peculiar nature of fame, circa 1999. Our front page story announced that the Provincial Museum of Alberta had landed a touring show of Linda McCartney photos. It's a true coup. Edmonton will be the only Canadian stop for this much-ballyhooed exhibit, Linda McCartney's Sixties: Portrait of an Era. On the bottom of page B4, a modest story announced that Wole Soyinka would be coming to Edmonton in February, for a symposium on African culture. I can't fault the news judgment of my colleagues. They're right. McCartney is news. Soyinka isn't. It's the whys and wherefores of that fact I find fascinating. Wole Soyinka is, arguably, the finest African writer of this century. He's a poet, playwright, director, novelist, essayist, scholar and translator, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize for literature. Soyinka's writing is funny and lyrical. He's fascinated with everything from the parallels between Greek and African mythology, to the evolution of the English language, to the workings of human memory.

He writes of modern West Africa in a satirical style and with a tragic sense of the obstacles to human progress. A member of the Yoruba people, Wole attended Government College and University College in Ibadan before graduating in English in 1958 from the University of Leeds, in England. Upon his return to Nigeria, Wole founded a national theatre, The Masks (later the Orisun Theatre), and wrote his first important play, A Dance of the Forests , for the Nigerian independence celebrations. The play satirizes the fledgling nation by stripping it of romantic legend and by showing that the present is no more a golden age than was the past. In this and other dramas, Wole fuses Western elements with subject matter and dramatic techniques deeply rooted in Yoruba folklore and religion. He uses symbolism, flashback, and ingenious plotting to create a rich dramatic structure. Woles works exhibit humor and fine poetic style as well as his gift for irony and satire and for accurately matching the language of complex characters to their social position and moral qualities. Wole's novels are The Interpreters (1965) and Season of Anomy , which appeared in 1973. His volumes of poetry include

The 1986 Nobel laureate and Africa's foremost playwright will give two major addresses, a directing workshop, a reading, and a press conference, as well as meet with classes and small groups of faculty and students. Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka, one of the most significant figures in contemporary world literature, will participate in lectures, workshops, readings, and other events at the five colleges. See calendar section for details of all Soyinka activities. Soyinka's significant artistic output has been matched by his unflagging commitment to political activism in Nigeria. In 1972, he published A Man Died , his prison memoirs based on two years imprisonment in solitary confinement for his efforts to bring peace during the Biafran Civil War. Currently, he is a vocal opponent of Nigerian dictator General Sani Abacha, who only one year ago shocked the world by ordering the execution of writer Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other political activists. "Soyinka is the most notable person speaking out internationally concerning the atrocities in Nigeria and the lasting consequences of European imperialism throughout Africa," said assistant professor of theatre arts Awam Amkpa, who worked with Soyinka in Nigeria and has been instrumental in bringing the playwright here. "I feel my students shouldn't just hear about his theories and politics, but should hear directly from him."
