2000 - Zhores I. Extractions: Dr. John Bardeen, Dr. Walter Brattain, and Dr. William Shockley discovered the transistor effect and developed the first device in December, 1947, while the three were members of the technical staff at Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, NJ. They were awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1956. John Bardeen (1908-1987) A brilliant theorist, Dr. Bardeen brought his keen understanding to the transistor team by explaining effects found in early transistor experiments. Dr. Bardeen, born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin, obtained his Ph.D. in mathematics and physics from Princeton University in 1936. A staff member of the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, from 1938 to 1941, he served as principal physicist at the US Naval Ordinance Laboratory in Washington, DC, during World War II, after which he joined Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc. "My introduction to semiconductors came just after the war, in late 1945, when I joined the Bell Laboratories research group on solid-state physics, which was being formed under the leadership of Stanley Morgan and William Shockley," Dr. Bardeen once related. "Following a Ph.D. under Eugene Wigner at Princeton and post-doctoral years with John H. Van Vleck at Harvard, I had been interested in the theory of metals before the war and was anxious to go back to solid-state physics after five years at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory in Washington."

Contained in Zeitschrift für Physik, Vol. 39, Berlin, Julius Springer, 26 October, 1926, pp. 499-518. Octavo., Contemporary blue buckram, with title, issue, and year in gilt on spine., Very good. With the pencil signature of Nobel Laureate John H. Van Vleck. All attempts to explain the helium spectra using the old quantum mechanics of Bohr and Sommerfeld had failed. Incorporating both Pauli's exclusion principle and spin into Schrödinger's two-electron wave function, Heisenberg was finally able to derive a good approximation to the emission spectrum of helium. This result marks the second great triumph of wave mechanics after Schrödinger;s treatment of hydrogen. In the course of this derivation, Heisenberg hit upon a new insight and established the principle of "exchange interaction"¯a force generated solely by the exchange of positions of two totally indistinguishable quantum particles¯which turned out to have much wider implications in both solid-state and nuclear physics. Van Vleck won the 1977 Nobel Prize in physics for his "fundamental theoretical investigations of the electronic structure of magnetic and disordered systems." Book Info: The Economy As An Evolving Complex System at Princeton University, received the nobel Prize in 1977 for fundamental theoreticaldevelopments in condensed matter physics (with john H. van vleck and Sir http://www.santafe.edu/sfi/publications/Bookinforev/eecssummary.html
Extractions: This book is the outcome of a meeting of the Santa Fe Institute where economists and physical and biological scientists came together to discuss a conceptual framework incorporating a more appropriate mathematics, with a greatly strengthened capacity to deal simultaneously with many variables, nonlinearity, and dynamics. Specific techniques for nonlinear dynamics and the study of adaptive paths with the aim of encouraging the use of such techniques to understand the complex and chaotic developments in the worldwide economy were discussed. The theoretical developments were oriented by empirical generalization about the economy and by detailed analysis of specific data using new methods for coping with nonlinear dynamics. These are the proceedings of the Evolution Paths of the Global Economy Workshop, held September 8-18, 1987 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Philip W. Anderson Philip W. Anderson , a Joseph Henry Professor at Princeton University, received the Nobel Prize in 1977 for fundamental theoretical developments in condensed matter physics (with John H. Van Vleck and Sir Nevill F. Mott). He received his Ph.D. in 1949 from Harvard University. Professor Anderson has been the recipient of the Buckley Prize (1964); American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1966); National Academy of Science (1967); Heinemann Prize (1975); Guthrie Medal (1978); Royal Society (London) foreign member (1980); National Medal of Science (1983); Foreign Associate Academa Lincei, Rome; and D.Sc. Extractions: American jurist and chief advocate of "sociological jurisprudence" who was first active as a botanist and educator. He followed his B.A. in botany with studies in law. Meanwhile, he served as director of the Nebraska state botanical survey (1892-1903), during which time he discovered a rare fungus, subsequently named Roscopoundia . Having been admitted to the Nebraska bar, Pound turned to the practice of law, and eventually became a leader in the reform of court administration in the United States. Ivan Vladimirovich Michurin Russian horticulturist, of little education but some skill in crossbreeding fruit trees to survive the winters of Central Russia. He earned the praise of the Soviet government by developing over 300 new types of fruit trees and berries. His theory of cross-breeding postulated the idea that acquired characteristics were inheritable. His private orchard at Koslov, became a state institution, and in 1932 the city known as Kozlov for four centuries became Michurinsk. When Mendelian genetics came under attack in the Soviet Union, Michurin's theories of hybridization became state doctrine amid much controversy. His ways were elaborated by Trofim D. Lysenko, a Bolshevik

Extractions: John Hasbrouck Van Vleck was an American physicist and mathematician who shared the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1977 with Philip W. Anderson and Sir Nevill F. Mott. The prize honoured Van Vleck's contributions to the understanding of the behaviour of electrons in magnetic, noncrystalline solid materials. Clifford M. Holland Clifford Milburn Holland was the American engineer who designed the 1.5-mile-long Holland Tunnel under the Hudson River, between New York City and Jersey City, NJ. In 1919, Holland, took office as Chief Engineer of the tunnel that would eventually bear his name. Tunnel construction began 12 Oct 1920 and was completed in 1927. In Holland's design , the new problem of noxious gases from internal combustion engines, was solved with huge-capacity fans in ventilating buildings at each end, forcing air through a supply duct below the roadway, with an exhaust duct above the ceiling. Holland did not see his dream come to fruition At age 41, he died one day before construction crews from the two sides met. The tunnel opened 13 Nov 1927. Dayton Clarence Miller
