We remember that great occasion in celebration of Poland's entry into NATO. President Walesa was born in 1943 in Popowo, Poland. He trained as an electrician and began work at the Lenin shipyards in Gdansk in 1966. He was imprisoned in 1981 for his union activities and received the Nobel Prize in1983. He was elected president of the Republic of Poland in 1990. He married in 1969 and has seven children. President Walesa led Poland during one of the most difficult periods in its history. The Soviet Union had just collapsed and along with it, 50 years of oppressive rule in Eastern Europe. The transition to freedom was difficult to implement since the citizens of these nations had become dependant on a State system that controlled every aspect of their lives. People were slaves to government because of the corrupt economic and political system. The very opposite of what Marx had intended, servitude, had been achieved. After communism left Poland, people starved. Conditions in the short-term were worse than under the totalitarian regime. This was the challenge that leaders like Walesa faced:

This may prove to be a very risky move for Walesa who lacks popular support across the country. In recent polls, Walesa does not appear to have any kind of support from majority groups in Poland. A poll taken this June by the Institute for Opinion and Market Research, showed that only five percent of people polled would vote for Walesa in the upcoming election. But Mr. Wnuk-Lipiski, a sociology professor, does not rule out Walesa where politics is concerned. He stated, "I don't know any one who would say he would win next year, but he may create certain political situations that allow him to win. The outspoken Walesa continued to press the government for concessions and in 1988, the Union once again organized crippling strikes throughout the country. When it became clear that the Polish Army was siding with the people, Jaruzelski negotiated the creation of Social Democracy in Poland. The next year Walesa was elected President of Poland.

One is that he was so busy throughout the 1980s and '90s that he "did not have the time to follow developments in technology closely." But he is catching up. One major bank uses NuTech software to examine millions of customers' deposit and withdrawal habits, complaint records, bounced checks and even the number of telemarketing calls they have received. The software predicts which customers are disgruntled and likely to take their business elsewhere. The bank then calls to say "We'd like to make things better for you." That sort of pre-emptive analysis has been missing from the linear software programs still used by most companies, says Amar Gupta, an M.I.T. productivity expert. NuTech and such competitors as BiosGroup and Searchspace are counted among the pioneers of the next tech revolution. "This kind of software gives us the ability to analyze a lot of information a lot better," says Gupta. "Everybody has to be agile, and in order to be agile, you have to be able to pinpoint trends."

RIT's Student Government sponsored Walesa's visit to the packed Ingle Auditorium as part of The Horton Speaker Series. An afternoon press conference and evening presentation echoed themes of placing the fate of the world in the hands of the younger generation as Walesa expressed hopes for achieving a peaceful world without military rule. He also predicted that other parts of the world would soon unite and include the "United States of Europe" and the "United States of Asia." In a question-and-answer session following his presentation, Walesa addressed the controversial subject of NATO expansion, among others. Nearly 18 years ago, Walesa burst into the world spotlight poised as a freedom fighter for incensed Polish workers demanding the right to organize free, independent trade unions. An electrician long active in the underground labor movement in Poland, Walesa founded Solidarity, which began as a strike and eventually became a social revolution. Under his leadership, Solidarity continued to thrive as an underground organization and, in 1983, Walesa won the Nobel Peace Prize.

Walesa is best known as leader of the Solidarity movement which led to a social and political revolution in Poland. Two years ago, former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher spoke to us about the fall of the 'Iron Curtain' and the end of Soviet hegemony in Europe," said Wesminster President Jim Traer. "With her address as a backdrop, it is particularly appropriate that we welcome to the Green Lecture podium one of the architects of the new Europe." Walesa, an electrician, burst onto the international stage in 1980 during the Lenin Shipyard strike in Gdansk, Poland. Speaking atop a bulldozer, Walesa rallied demoralized workers to continue to fight for reform. Revitalized by his passion, the strike spread to factories across the nation. The strikers christened the new movement "Solidarity." Walesa's activities were supported by the Catholic Church. In January 1981 he was received by Pope John Paul II in Rome. Relationships with the Polish government, however, worsened. In December 1981 martial law was declared and Walesa was arrested. He spent a year in jail before returning to his job at the Gdansk shipyards in 1982. Under Walesa's leadership, the Solidarity movement defeated the Polish Communist party in 1989. Walesa became the first democratically-elected president of Poland in 1990.
