By Cari Hammerstrom Daily Texan Staff Celebrating the 100th anniversary of the first awarding of the Nobel Prize, the UT Swedish Studies Program held the 2001 Swedish Symposium, "The Nobel Prizes: A Legacy of Achievement," Saturday at the Peter T. Flawn Academic Center. The symposium, organized with the help of the College of Liberal Arts and the Department of Germanic Studies and funded by the Swedish Studies Excellence Endowment, attracted about 100 people to listen to keynote speaker Steven Weinberg, who received the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics. En todos estos casos la formulación matemática de la teoría contiene, para los físicos encargados de estudiarla, confirmarla o censurarla, grados de belleza que favorecen su general aceptación. A medida que la ciencia se vuelve más intuitiva, se acerca a la unificación definitiva, a una Teoría de Todo, a medida que el científico ha de prescindir del experimento y basarse en intuiciones matemáticas, los criterios estéticos parecen ocupar el lugar de la verificación. Esto ocurre principalmente con las teorías cerradas, aquellas que se convierten en especialidades autónomas dentro del marco global de la ciencia. Las últimas teorías cerradas formuladas son la Teoría de la Relatividad, la Mecánica Cuántica y la Teoría de Cuerdas (ahora Supercuerdas). En todos estos casos la formulación matemática de la teoría contiene, para los físicos encargados de estudiarla, confirmarla o censurarla, grados de belleza que favorecen su general aceptación. Steven Weinberg, premio Nobel de física, confiesa: "Creo que la general aceptación de la Teoría de la Relatividad General fue en gran parte debida al atractivo de la propia teoría, esto es, a su belleza". ¿Y qué clase de belleza aprecian los físicos en las formulaciones matemáticas de dichas teorías? Para Michio Kaku, cuando los físicos hablan de "belleza" en sus teorías, lo que realmente quieren expresar es que la teoría posee al menos dos características esenciales:
