He was educated in Australia and worked for a time as a jackeroo on his parents property. He returned to England in 1932 to attend Cambridge University. During the Second World War he served as an intelligence officer in the RAF. His first novels, which were published during the war, received literary acclaim. He returned to Australia in 1948 where he produced his greatest works including Voss and Riders in the Chariot, both of which received the Miles Franklin Award, and The Eye of the Storm for which he was awarded the Nobel Prize. He wrote an autobiography, Flaws in the Glass, in 1981 and co-operated with David Marr in producing a biography, Patrick White: A Life, published in 1991 He died in 1990.
