Among his other major contributions are his gauge field work with R. L. Mills, which connects certain fundamental forces of nature in the atom to the requirements of symmetry, and his development of the Yang-Baxter equations. In all of this, the inductive approach has been key. Yang learned this, in part, by watching physicists Enrico Fermi and Edward Teller at work, noting the way they kept experimental results rather than theoretical declarations foremost in mind. As a theoretical physicist, Yang has tried to maintain that standard for himself, a valuable asset in the exploration of these tiny scales. Of all his work, however, the work on parity, because of its intimate analogy to symmetry, may be particularly intriguing. Yang and Lee's work on parity came at a time of crisis in one aspect of the field of particle physics. A meson (a force-carrying particle within the nucleus) was discovered that decayed into 2 other pi-mesons; it was called the theta particle. Another meson, the tau particle, was discovered which decayed into 3 pi-mesons. By 1956, the mystery had a name: the theta-tau puzzle, because the theta and tau particles were otherwise quite similar: similar mass, similar charge and more. In fact, no other particles were known to be so similar and yet be different particles. But they could not be one and the same, because that would mean the one particle decayed asymmetrically. Impossible: parity was always conserved.

Mr. Yang Wuzhi was born in 1896. He went to the United States in 1923 and studied at Stanford Univ. and Univ. of Chicago. He was the first Chinese scholar with a Ph.D in math. He was invited to teach at Tsinghua in 1929 and he trained a large number of famous scientists. President Wang Dazhong highly appreciated Mr. Yang Wuzhi contributions to Tsinghua. President Wang emphasized that mathematics is a very important discipline for a top-quality Science School and a world-class university. 19 members of CAS, many celebrities, the eldest son, prof. C.N. Yang, of Mr. Yang Wuzhi, and other Yang's family members and relatives attended the ceremony.

He is also known as Frank or Franklin. Yang was brought up in the peaceful and academically inclined atmosphere of the campus of Tsinghua University, just outside of Peiping, China, where his father was a Professor of Mathematics. He received his college education at the National Southwest Associated University in Kunming, China, and completed his B.Sc. degree there in 1942. His M.Sc. degree was received in 1944 from Tsinghua University, which had moved to Kunming during the Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945). He went to the U.S.A. at the end of the war on a Tsinghua University Fellowship, and entered the University of Chicago in January 1946. At Chicago he came under the strong influence of Professor E. Fermi. After receiving his Ph.D. degree in 1948, Yang served for a year at the University of Chicago as an Instructor. He has been associated with the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, New Jersey, U.S.A., since 1949, where he became a Professor in 1955.

Born in Hofei, Anhwei, China, Yang graduated from the Southwest Associated University then proceeded to obtain a B.Sc. which he did in 1942 and then his master's in 1944. In 1946, Yang was able to attend the University of Chicago and receive his Ph.D. in nuclear physics due to a fellowship. After completing his Ph.D under Edward Teller, Yang became an assistant to Enrico Fermi who wielded great influence in Yang's scientific development. It was while in Chicago that Yang began to work with Lee on the law of parity conservation. By 1953, it had come to the attention of both men that parity conservation had some flaws when a new meson (the K-meson) possessed decay modes of differing parity. As a result, Yang and Lee began to investigate further. Through research it was brought to light that no experimental evidence existed against parity nonconversation in work interactions. Experiments conducted by Yang and Lee proved the existence of parity violations as well as the fact that the symmetry that existed between the particle and the antiparticle otherwise known as the charge conjugation symmetry could in fact be broken by weak decays. In addition to his work on parity conservation and weak interactions, Yang's other interests included statistical mechanics which he worked on with a number of researchers including Lee and also research in the nature of elementary particle reactions at high energies. In 1954, Yang also worked on the gauge theory with Robert L. Mills.
