Editorial Review

Product Description
In this disturbing report, Amnesty International surveys in detail the use of the death penalty in 180 countries around the world. In analyses the arguments used to justify the penalty and shows how they fail the test of logic and experience. The report makes grim reading - but it also offers hope: it shows that nearly half the countries of the world have already abolished the death penalty or discontinued its use. It points ahead to a world without executions. ... Read more

Product Description
In 1946 the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, headed by Eleanor Roosevelt, began to formulate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The ideals compiled by the commission have become beacons of dignity and hope for people the world over. For the first time ever, essential human rights, as codified in the 1989 Convention on the Rights of the Child, are being presented in a book specifically for children. Joy Berry’s Mine & Yours: Human Rights for Kids, created in association with Amnesty International USA, defines and explains for kids their rights, and teaches them how to assert their rights with integrity and responsibility. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great way to introduce or solidify the concept human rights
I purchased this book to use with my students (freshman) for a human rights/civil rights unit in my reading/English class.

Even though it seems to be written for children, it is VERY comprehensive - there is a lot of detailed information with adult words and concepts, and it is fairly long.I had to paraphrase some of the words and concepts even for my higher/grade level students. My advice for people using this as a teaching tool would be to divide the book into chunks and then do a reflection/review activity between readings instead of reading the whole thing in one sitting - it's just too much information for some students to absorb in one sitting.

The pictures were probably the best part of the book - they kept my students interested.A lot of my students in my English class are also in my Global Studies class, so they were guessing which cultures and/or religions the students in the illustrations represented and why they thought so.

All in all, a great concept and a great teaching tool if presented in smaller parts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank you mom
My mom bought this book for us.It is really great and I learned a lot.We guessed where the kids where from and looked up countries on a map.Every kid should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mine & Yours: Human Rights for Kids
We read this book with my girl scout troup. We are learning about how to connect with other girls and kids around the world.Americans don't always learn about people in other countries. We want to be less ignorant and to learn about human rights! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clouds of injustice
December 2009 is the 25th anniversary commemorating the world's worst industrial accident when in 1984, Methyl Isocyanate (MIC) and other highly toxic chemicals leaked from the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal India, killing and injuring half a million innocent men, women, and children.

Clouds of Injustice is not only timely with critical environmental issues, it is a must read for lawmakers and the world leaders who must address and remedy the problem of needless stockpiles deadly and dangerous chemicals. Clouds of Injustice also about another timely issue facing our world and its leaders - corruption.

Another disaster- of greater proportions- threatens, this time in the U. S. where three times the MIC of Bhopal is being stored at the German owned Bayer plant in West Virginia (formerly the Union Carbide plant).Unfortunately, the Bayer MIC controversy and story is unfolding and sounding like a repeat of the story in Clouds of Injustice.Hopefully this book will inspire our leaders to find a different ending and lives will be spared.

Product Description
The 2009 Amnesty International Report highlights the fact that the world is in the middle of a human rights crisis. We are sitting on a social, political and economic time-bomb that will explode if human rights concerns are not addressed.Billions of people are suffering from insecurity, injustice and indignity around the world and while many aspects of this crisis pre-date the economic 'downturn', it is clear that the global financial situation is making the human rights crisis far worse. More people have been driven into poverty and placed at increased risk of human rights violations. In Africa, the food crisis, a hallmark of 2008, had a disproportionate impact on vulnerable groups. In Asia, millions of people have swelled the ranks of those already living in poverty, as the cost of food, fuel and other commodities increased dramatically in 2008. ... Read more
