Product Description
For courses in Management and Principles of Management.Combining education, learning and fun, Threshold Competitor is a computer-based model that simulates a small manufacturing company producing two plastic-molded products - Product 1 and Product 2. In Team the student is part of a group managing a separate company, competing with other groups in the class in the same marketplace. Solo is a play-alone version of Team, placing students in competition with computer-managed companies. Both versions encourage students to: decide their company mission, goals, policies, and strategies; develop planning, organizing, staffing, directing, and controlling skills; and make marketing, financial, and manufacturing decisions. The programs provide valuable feedback, rating and ranking the companies according to sales revenues, net income, return on assets, and accuracy in forecasting sales. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too Much Guesswork?
I used this book in as a simulation in my Business Strategy class at HLG.I think that the simulation was basically useless because there was entirely too much guesswork involved. There is no mention of what type ofproduct is being manufactured, only that is made out of plastic.Whenmaking decisions such as how much to invest in product quality it wouldhave helped quite a bit to know the specific type of product beingproduced. For example, quality is for more important when producing laptopcomputer cases than when producing toy army men.I think that the lack ofspecific information concerning the product and the market are the downfallof this book. The simulation would have been far more enjoyable andbeneficial if informed decisions could be made.

3-0 out of 5 stars Threshold Competitor
I thought that this textbook satisfied our needs of what our tasks were for the course. At first the book was somewhat difficult to understand, but after reading through various parts several times, I began to get afeel of what was to be expected to compete with the other companies.

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice try.
I thought that this simulation was a good shot at getting as close to the real world without going out into it.I think that there were parts that could have been perfected but over all it was a good simulation and I wouldrecomend it to other buisness majors.I enjoyed the competiton that itcreated and it was fun getting the results back to see who was on top eachtime.

4-0 out of 5 stars We learned together as a team.
The handbook was helpful and easy to understand. The software was somewhat hard to understand. It would have been helpful to know what the rating system was before we started. Also more information on how to forecast sales might be helpful.I learned from the experience how to worktogether to accomplish a task.I would recommond this book to anyone inbusiness.

1-0 out of 5 stars What About This?
I was given the assignment of working through and operating a business in the Threshold world. When I got into it I realized that many things were not accounted for in this world. The simulation starts you off in an industry that no one has been in yet. This is very unrealistic in today'sworld. The simulation also does not give you any information on what theeconomy is doing or what your competitor, if any, are doing. In the realworld you would be able to tell a little bit about what other are doing butnot in the Threshold world. The last thing that I did not like is thatthere is no customer loyalty or repeat buyers. Every quarter you have tofind new customers and the old customers never come back. My understandingof a simulation is a make believe world that is very close to the realworld. If this is true then Threshold is the worst simulation I have everyworked with. ... Read more

Product Description
Appropriate for undergraduate management or introduction to business courses, as well as senior-level strategy and MBA short courses. Threshold Competitor is a Windows-based business management program that simulates the workings of a small business. Threshold Competitor provides students the opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of business concepts in a competitive, but safe environment. *Team Version. Working in groups, students make the decisions needed to run small manufacturing business. Each group manages a separate company which is in competition with other group-managed companies in the same marketplace. *Solo Version. Threshold Solo Competitor is a play-alone version that allows students to play the game by themselves, at their own pace. Students make decisions in Solo Competitor that are identical to those found in Team Competitor. However, rather than compete against other student-managed companies, Solo Competitor uses expert logic to create a competitive environment that places students in competition with 15 semi-intelligent companies managed by the computer. If students perform poorly against the computer competitors, they can stop playing the current setup and start a new competition quickly and easily.Since administration by the instructor is minimal Solo Competitor works well for large classes. It can also be used for distance learning courses. (Students can send their results to instructors as an e-mail attachment.). *Team and Solo Combined Version. This combined package allows students to compete in a dynamic team-based environment, and also to work individually against the computer. Instructors can also use the Solo Version as an assessment tool to test the understanding of individual students. ... Read more

Product Description
Threshold Entrepreneur: Solo Version is a user-friendly Windows-based simulation that allows users to launch, manage, and operate their own small business enterprise, while facing computer-initiated situations. It provides them with an opportunity to apply their knowledge of entrepreneurship to the process of managing a start-up business in a safe (simulated) environment. It allows them to learn from their mistakes without having to suffer a real financial loss, and improves their odds for success when they begin their business enterprise.Readers manage the start-up of a business that sells two plastic products, which are sold through retail markets to the general public. The Solo version places readers in competition with companies managed by the computer. Readers use two screens to enter their decisions on company mission, goals, policies, strategies, and sales estimates; and, they can review previous quarters' decisions and results either on the screen or on print outs as they work. They see the results of their decisions and have an opportunity to correct mistakes in the following quarters of operation. They also process the decisions for the companies managed by the computer for their competitors. The program determines the number of products each company sells and produces a series of operations, marketing, and financial reports for the readers' company. The programs also rate the companies and rank them according to their performance on sales revenues, net income, return on equity, and accuracy in forecasting sales. ... Read more
