Product Description
First published in 1909, The Great Illusion sets out to answer one of the greatest questions in human history: Why is there war? Specifically, Angell wishes to discuss why there is war between the countries of Europe, which seem to always be at one another's throats.Angell refutes the belief that military power results in greater wealth and instead proposes that advanced economies based on trade and contract law can only generate value in the absence of military upset. War destroys any wealth that conquerors may have wanted to obtain, making the whole enterprise pointless. A deep understanding of this would, then, end the need for war.Students of history, political science, and peace studies will find much to ponder and much to argue with in this classic text. ... Product Description
Sir Norman Angell, pioneer both of international relations as a distinct discipline and of the theory of globalization, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, and one of the twentieth century's leading internationalist campaigners on both sides of the Atlantic, lived the great illusion in three senses. First, his 'life job', as he came to call it, was founded upon and defined by The Great Illusion, a best-seller whose original version appeared in 1909: it perceptively showed how economic interdependence would prevent great powers profiting from war; yet it made other, less felicitous, claims from whose implications he spent decades trying to extricate himself. Second, his magnum opus and all his best work derived, to an extent unusual for a public intellectual, not from abstract thinking but from an eventful and varied life as a jobbing journalist in four countries, a cowboy, land-speculator, and gold-prospector in California, production manager of the continental edition of the Daily Mail, author, lecturer, pig farmer, Labour MP, entrepreneur, and campaigner for collective security. Third, he fostered many an enduring illusion about himself by at various times giving wrongly his age, name, nationality, marital status, key career dates, and core beliefs.

By dint of careful detective work, this first biography of Angell reveals the truth about a remarkable life that has hitherto been much misrepresented and misinterpreted. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars SIR NORMAN ANGELL
This is an adult book about a BritishPacifist that mainly lectured about his book The Great Illusion.( I haven't read the Illusion---but the implications I gathered were that there will never be peace, the stronger always pick on the weeker, there will always be war.) He calmed he was an american ,even though he wa born in England;because, he homesteaded 160 acres in Bakersfield Calif. He was a cowboy and was taught how to survive by a cowboy named Covert. He remained in the U.S. for only a short time. He went back to Europe where he had many jobs with the press (he ran a newpaper in Paris). He had influence both positive and negative with anyone of importance in England. It seems his geatest support from the USA was Nicolas Murray Butler. Sir Angell thought his Knighthood was a farce but he used it to influence others. He won the Nobel Peace Prize and was very instrumental in The League Of Nations.Yet the purpose of the Leagur seemed to backfire and help cause the second world war: because, of the abuses of France againts the Germans. Secondly, England stoodby while Germany created it's army, weapons and advance on Austria. Sir Angell was very frustrated with the leadeship of The League of Nation and the Priministers of England such as Chamberland an those that followed, but never gave up. The book was very inlightening, but not an easy book to read. It is definitly not mental chewing gum. Albert Marrin does not talk down. I would say it is written on the 16th grade level. If your into history or international law it should me a must read.

The shells may not hit us, yet there is hardly a farmhouse in our country that will not, however unconsciously, be affected by these far-off events. We may not witness the trains of weary refugees trailing over the roads, but (if we could but see the picture) there will be an endless procession of our own farmers' wives with a hardened and shortened lifeand their children with less ampl... ... (b) That the League shall offer to the enemy peoples this clear alternative: Admission into the League on equal terms and protection by it, on conforming to its conditions (which may include democratic representation in foreign affairs) ; or, on failure to conform to its conditions, exclusion from the benefits of the League, and, instead, the penalty of such coercive measures, economic and other which it can employ.(2) The mechanism of such a League should provide not merely for the representation of its constituent states as geographical units and national or political entities but (by proportional representation) of the minority parties therein. It is further suggested that the method of putting that proposal into effect might be the calling of a Public Inter-Allied Conference to draft the definite plans by which the policy outlined by Mr. Wilson could be put into practice. The Conference should show that the things emphasized in diplomatic rhetoric are indeed the things for which the war is being fought, by dealing first and foremost with these objects:(1... ... With Eastern Europe a political powder keg in the early years of the 20th century, this plea for reasoned pacifism-first published in 1912-seems entirely prescient in hindsight, with our foreknowledge of the dreadful war to engulf the continent two years later.A classic of political theory, Peace Theories and the Balkan War discusses:. the inadequacies of the terms "war" and "peace". the economic motives for war. the impossibility of separating the moral and the material. the danger of war to be found in its illusions. war and religion. and much more.British journalist and politician SIR RALPH NORMAN ANGELL (1872-1967) was an executive for the World Committee against War and Fascism and a member of the executive committee of the League of Nations Union. Knighted in 1931, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1933. From 1905 to 1912, he was the Paris editor for the Daily Mail, and served as a Labour MP from 1929 to 1931.
