Il est le fils cadet d'Arthur Piaget, professeur de littérature médiévale, et de la française Rebecca James Jackson. À l'âge de onze ans, Jean Piaget, élève au collège latin de Neuchâtel, écrit un court commentaire sur un moineau albinos aperçu dans un parc. Ce bref article est considéré comme le point de départ d'une brillante carrière scientifique illustrée par une soixantaine de livres et plusieurs centaines d'articles. Son intérêt pour les mollusques se développe après l'adolescence. Il deviendra un malacologiste renommé dès la fin de ses études secondaires.
