Chapters: Oswald Avery, Simon Flexner, David Baltimore, Maclyn Mccarty, Joshua Lederberg, John Howard Northrop, Hubert Markl, Fritz Albert Lipmann, Leslie B. Vosshall, Leonor Michaelis, Sam Granick. Excerpt: The Rockefeller University is a private university which focuses primarily on basic research in the biomedical fields and offers postgraduate and postdoctoral education. It is located between 63rd and 68th Streets along York Avenue, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York City, New York. Its current president is Sir Paul Nurse. Twenty-three Nobel Prize winners have been associated with the university. The university has been the site of many important scientific breakthroughs. Rockefeller scientists, for example, established that DNA is the chemical basis of heredity, discovered blood groups, showed that viruses can cause cancer, founded the modern field of cell biology, worked out the structure of antibodies, developed methadone maintenance for individuals addicted to heroin, devised the AIDS "cocktail" drug therapy, and identified the weight-regulating hormone leptin. The original Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research was founded in 1901 by the oil baron and philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, who had earlier founded the University of Chicago in 1889. The Rockefeller family has maintained strong links with the institution throughout its historyDavid Rockefeller, to give just one example, is the current Honorary Chairman and a Life Trustee. The Institute changed its name to The Rockefeller University in 1965, after expanding its mission to include education. Upon its organization in 1901, Simon Flexner assumed the directorship. As is traditional in the AAAS, he now serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors. Baltimore was born to Gertrude Lipschitz and Richard Baltimore in New York City. He graduated from Great Neck High School in 1956, and credits his interest in biology to a high-school summer spent at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. He earned a BA at Swarthmore College in 1960, and received his Ph.D. at Rockefeller University in 1964. After postdoctoral fellowships at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a non-faculty research position at the Salk Institute, he joined the MIT faculty in 1968. In 1975, at the age of 37, he shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Howard Temin and Renato Dulbecco. The citation reads, "for their discoveries concerning the interaction between tumour viruses and the genetic material of the cell." At the time, Baltimore's greatest contribution to virology was his discovery of reverse transcriptase (RTase or RT). Reverse transcriptase is essential for the reproduction of retroviruses such as HIV and was also discovered independently, and at about the same time, by Mizutani and Temin. Also in 1975, Baltimore was an organizer of the Asilomar confere...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=173905 ... Read more

Product Description
Spirit of Place: Baltimore's Favorite Spaces by Sarah Achenbach and Bill McAllen captures how Baltimore's architecture, neighborhoods and public places and spaces-the celebrated, the everyday and the forgotten-resonate in our lives and memories. We may admire architecture for its design, grace and function, but it's how we interact with a building or place-the way we inhabit it, and it inhabits us-that gives it its soul. A one-of-a-kind pictorial and narrative tour of the Baltimore region, the book is equal parts fine art photography book and oral history celebrating 56 places that put the charm in Charm City. Recollections filled with nostalgia, triumphs, yearnings, sadness and hope abound in the book's exquisite black-and-white portraits and engaging reflections, including essays by architect Tom Gamper, historic preservationist Tyler Gearhart, novelist Laura Lippman, and journalist, author and television producer David Simon. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Spirit of Place Baltimore's Favorite Spaces
This is a great book about all the special places in Baltimore. The front cover is my dad Mr. Rowland Fontz who repaired the Bromo Seltzer Clock until shortly before his death in January 2009. I have a copy of this book and wish I could find another one for his only grandson who helped him fix the clock when he was a teenager. This is a must read if you grew up or live in Baltimore. Great coffee table book. ... Read more

Product Description
... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Molecular Cell Biology by Harvey Lodish et al , 3rd Edition
The book is especially good to understand the mechanisms of Cell Biology. The beauty of the book is that it does not look at Cell Biology purely from the aspect of a cell and it's organelles but goes a step further to give a clear picture of how cell organelles and their components function in a cell and how it is impossible to study the cell without it's amalgamation with molecular biology. The chapters on DNA replication and RNA transcription are very lucid.Signal transduction is also very comprehensively explored. The book has kept abreast with latest studies and makes it an especially useful text for 1st year Masters/Ph.D students ... Read more
