Product Description
We are entering a new era of increasing understanding of how genetics influences human health and development, agricultural productivity and the ecological balance of the planet. This will be crucial to decisions involving personal, medical, societal, economic and environmental issues. This book aims to convey to non-specialists the excitement and significance of recent discoveries dealing with genes and the innovative capabilities that stem from these advances. Introductory chapters trace the historical path to present views about inheritance, introducing the concept of the gene, how genes are passed from one generation to the next, how they determine traits in all living organisms, and how alteration in genes influence traits and cause disease. Some basic chemistry is introduced at this stage to enable the reader to understand that modern genetics is a molecular science. Subsequent chapters describe how genes are encoded in the molecular structure of DNA and how that information is decided to create a functional organism. An important feature of that process - the intricate "switches" that turn genes on and off in the proper tissues at proper times - is emphasized because of its critical role in guiding normal growth and development. All of this is a prelude to chapters that describe how mutations - spontaneous, induced or directed - alter normal genetic functions to produce diseases such as heart and mental diseases, cancer and colour blindness. These chapters further describe current efforts to map all human genes and how all this information is being used to find genes, and to analyze their status as a means to improving the diagnosis, prevention, and cure of genetic disorders. Similar efforts and technology are being applied for the improvement of agriculturally important crops and animals, new industrial products, and a new apprieciation of the natural world and its origins. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A very good intro
If you are the layman and want to get basics in genetics and molecular biology, this is a book for you. Berg and Singer explain the field in a very clear language, backed by good drawings and pictures wherever you need it. Having read the book mapping genomes, uncovering kinship, cloning, differences between eucaryotic and procaryotic genomes and virus strategies will be no mystery for you. The book encourages to dig deeper, and is a minimum for anyone wanting to get the feeling of what is going on in modern biology. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best!
If you enjoy collecting online, you can't find a better reference book for identifying the many union cases and frames. This book offers enough historical background information on all aspects of the beautiful and unique union case; it's origins and makers; mat and hinge designs; all of which will help make more intelligent decisions in your collecting. You will find some of the most beautiful photos of cases from noted collectors the world over, many of which you would never see elsewhere. The author was thorough in pointing out discovered differences in several of the cases where other manufacturers made "similar" designs due to the popularity or trends of the time, stimulating the detective in all of us to find more on our own.I just have to say that this book has brought me so much enjoyment in my own collecting and an higher appreciation of the wonderful artistry from an earlier time.

2-0 out of 5 stars This book is not worth the money
This book shows many cases, gives rarity & tell who madethe cases. There is almost no text at all in this book, it isbasically a picture book. The book is lacking in information on the different companies that made cases & on when the cases were made. For those who do not know about the cases a company name is not helpful without the company background. Without the time they were made they are not helpful in dating the images they hold. The book is lacking in that it does not show a single top folding case from the early years of photography c1839 to 1842/43. You would be better off getting the books 'Union Cases' by Krainik & Walvoord & 'American Minature Case Art' by Rinhart. The two books I recommend give more information on the cases & are not just a bunch of pretty pictures. Do not waste your money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Two great scientists on a leader of 20th Century Genetics
A page turner on the excitement of uncovering many secrets of life from the rediscovery of Mendel to the threshold of revealing the genetic dictionary and how it is translated into living forms told by two leading biochemical geneticists.

4-0 out of 5 stars jf from nj
High marks for telling an interesting story well.George Beadle was a old-fashioned, principled country boy from Nebraska. But he and a cast of brilliant colleagues revolutionized how biology is done, and that is the highlight of the book.It is best when showing how Beadle got where he did scientifically.George Beadle was a driven, brilliant workaholic who kept his emotions tightly bottled, like his flies, except fpr short, well-directed bursts of anger directed at lab workers for sloppiness. His wonderful institutional personality contrasts sharply with more infamous, disagreeable sorts, like Delbruck and Watson, who appear later in the book. The book moves along smartly and efficiently, but lapses in a couple areas.I recognize this is a book about biology, but it's also a biography, and so Beadle's personal life is fair game, besides being inherently as interesting as much of the later administrative info, in which the book becomes bogged down. So, here goes: Frequent references are made to the unpleasant personality of George Beadle's first wife, Marion. But no attempt is made to flesh this out in any effective way. What did she say and do that was so offensive to so many people. What was her problem? She remains too much of a mystery, given that she was an important part of Beadle's life. This lack of info contrasts with the often overly detailed, and somewhat murky explanation of the neurospora life cycle.I had to read it three times to understand what they were talking about and have taught this stuff for 20 years. The authors are scientists, not historians or novelists, and it shows.Still, it's close to a page-turner for the first half. ... Product Description
Bruno Kreisky (1911-1990) is undoubtedly the most prominent and influential politician to emerge in postwar Austria. For some thirty years, he helped to shape his country's politics and raise its status in the world, first as secretary of state, then as leader of the opposition Social Democratic Party and as foreign minster, and finally as chancellor from 1970 to 1983. During his long tenure of public office, Austria achieved unprecedented levels of prosperity; he promoted electoral and educational reform and weathered the occasional scandal. His analytical mind and intelligence were much appreciated by statesmen in East and West as well as in the academy, as were his deeply felt humanism, integrity, untiring advocacy of tolerance and social justice, and his earnest sense of responsibility. These won him the trust and admiration of the leading international figures of his era, including Tito, Nehru, Nasser, De Gaulle, and Pope John XXIII. His international connections and his position as leader of a non-aligned state allowed him to assume the role of honest broker in international peace, human rights, and development initiatives. His stature enabled him to play an active part in the promotion of the Arab-Israeli dialogue and pave the way for President Jimmy Carter's mediation of the Israeli-Egypt peace accord through his close relationship with Sadat. As a result of such activity, Kreisky was respected and praised by every U.S. administration from Kennedy to Brezhnev, despite his support for the containment of Soviet communism. This annotated volume - a condensed version of the three volumes of the German edition and compiled by Jill Lewis, University of Wales, and Oliver Rathkolb, Director of the Stifung Bruno Archiv - gives a fascinating insight into Kreisky's life and his many activities. He lets us participate in the big decisions in which he was involved and shares his encounters with other world leaders of this time. Austria be a small country, but it produced at least one major leader whose lively and immensely readable account and wisdom many readers will find inspiring. ... Read more

Product Description
Few issues affecting the therapeutic professions are as much discussed and as little understood as informed consent. This book, written from the combined perspectives of a physician, a lawyer, and a social scientist, is the first reference work to provide a concise overview of informed consent with particular emphasis on the practical issues facing professionals. After introducing the ethical theories behind this principle, the authors describe the history and current status of the law, detailing all legal requirements for practitioners. They consider the problems faced when these theories and laws are applied in a clinical setting, offering suggestions for simplifying the interaction between doctor and patient and for making it clinically meaningful. The stress throughout is on ways to improve practitioners' performance in meeting these ethical and legal mandates. The book will be valuable for all professionals working in areas where issues of informed consent are likely to arise, including medicine, mental health care, social work, dentistry and law. ... Product Description
This book examines the New Zealand Labour government's policy banning nuclear powered and armed warships from the country's ports. It comprises a case-study of the pressure put on the government by the United States to reverse this policy. The policy is first placed in New Zealand's historical and social context and the immediate steps leading to its implementation described. There follows a discussion of US, British and Australian opposition to the ban (focusing on the US) and the options available to overturn it. The volume contains a detailed chronology of events as they happened during the first term of government until the general election of 1987 (including the sinking of "The Rainbow Warrior" in Auckland Harbour) and concludes with a discussion of the issues raised and of the apparent failure of opposition to the ban. ...
