5-0 out of 5 stars Lucid, informative assessment of an influentical philosopher
Henri Bergson was an influential philosopher claimed by the French as anearly phenomenologist, and in American and Britain as a vitalistphilosopher. Bergson And Philosophy is an introductory study of his use ofphilosophical form and dispels the view that Bergson ever stuck to one typeof philosophy at all, either vitalism or phenomenology. Rather, aBergsonian idea of "metaphilosophy" stating that, in a universewith no static foundations, there can never e a philosophy means that ifeverything is changing, then change is also a constant truth of philosophy.John Mullarkey is a teacher of philosophy at the University of Sudnerlandwho explores each of Bergson's seven major works from a metaphilosophicalperspective. Highly recommended for personal, professional, and academicphilosophy collections, Bergson And Philosophy showcases an important andlucid reassessment of an influential philosopher while setting his work inan appropriate philosophical context. ... Product Description

Deleuze, Whitehead, Bergson: Rhizomatic Connections is the first book length collection of essays exploring the relations between the work of Gilles Deleuze, Alfred North Whitehead and Henri Bergson. With contributions by established international scholars from cultural studies, philosophy and theology, Deleuze, Whitehead, Bergson examines the articulation between their concepts, methods and modes of doing philosophy and how their thought relates to different disciplines. Organized thematically, each essay examines the section themes in the context of the contrasts, differences and conjunctions--the rhizomatic connections--between their shared concepts. Deleuze, Whitehead, Bergson will make a significant impact upon and contribution to the scholarship on these philosophers, challenging many of the preconceptions, the "images of thought," through which they are all too often read and interpreted.

Product Description
The author of this volume shows that French philosopher Henri Bergson played a central role in the development of British literary modernism. While Bergson's influence on modernism has long been debated, this is an examination of the ways in which his ideas are manifest in British modernism. Focusing on the work of T.E. Hulme, the Men of 1914, the Bloomsbury Group, T.S. Eliot and John Middleton Murry, the author demonstrates that Bergson's theories underlie the literary aesthetics of the period that forms the intellectual basis of modern literature. She then turns her critical eye to five major modernist writers, T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, James Joyce, Dorothy Richardson and Joseph Conrad, and provides detailed Bergsonian readings of their major works. ... Read more

Excerpt:Henri-Louis Bergson Henri-Louis Bergson (French pronunciation: 18 October 1859 4 January 1941) was a major French philosopher , influential especially in the first half of the 20th century.Bergson convinced people through his writing that immediate experience and intuition were as important as rational and scientific thinking for understanding reality.Biography Overview Bergson was born in the Rue Lamartine in Paris, not far from the Palais Garnier (the old Paris opera house) in 1859 (the year in which France emerged as a victor in the Second Italian War of Independence and over a month before the publication of Charles Darwin 's On the Origin of Species ). His father, the musician Micha Bergson had a Polish Jewish family background (originally bearing the name Bereksohn). His mother, Katherine Levison, daughter of a Yorkshire doctor, was from an English and Irish Jewish background. The Bereksohns were a famous Jewish entrepreneurial family of Polish descent. Henri Bergson's great-great-grandfather, Szmul Jakubowicz Sonnenberg, called Zbytkower, was a prominent banker and a protégé of Stanis aw August Poniatowski , King of Poland from 1764 to 1795.Henri Bergon's family lived in London for a few years after his birth, and he obtained an early familiarity with the English language from his mother. Before he was nine, his parents crossed the English Channel and settled in France, Henri becoming a naturalized French citizen.Henri Bergson married Louise Neuberger, a cousin of Marcel Proust (1871 1922), in 1891. They had a daughter, Jeanne, born deaf in 1896.Bergson's sister, Mina Bergson (also known as Moina Mathers ), married the English occult author Samuel Liddell MacGregor Ma... ... Read more
