Product Description
This selection of papers in the field of nonlinear opticscontains reprints of original research, and general reviews writtensince 1960 up to the present. Brief comments by the author place eachpaper in a historical context of the evolution of nonlinearoptics. Papers are selected from a more comprehensive bibliographyeither on the basis of their influence on subsequent developments orbecause they were originally published in journals or conferenceproceedings which are less easily accessible. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A historical review
The book reprints most of the Nobel prize winner Bloembergen's work in the field of nonlinear optics. Those of the papers inthis volume can be found in the library. However, with the author's commentary, one can understand the motivation and direction of each work and the interesting thing presented. For students and researchers in the field, it may not be much useful as the works came from early 60s to late 80s. The first few papers review the basic of nonlinear optics, which are suitable for the new fresher. The book contains much work on topics in the past, but not the current "heat" one. Therefore, it's not useful for the active researchers in the field. But for those who are interested in the development from the past to present, you can have some insight from it. ... Read more

Product Description
This book presents a selection of papers, written by NicolaasBloembergen and his associates during the years 1946-1962, on thesubjects of nuclear magnetic relaxation, paramagnetic relaxation andmasers, and magnetic resonance spectroscopy of solids. The volumebegins with autobiographical notes to provide a personal historicalbackground. Each paper is preceded by commentary with additionalinformation regarding the early development of magnetic resonance incondensed matter. A reproduction of his Ph.D. thesis, "NuclearMagnetic Relaxation", Leiden, 1948, is included in this volume. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Product Description
Nicolaas Bloembergen, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Physics(1981), wrote Nonlinear Optics in 1964, when the field of nonlinearoptics was only three years old. The available literature has sincegrown by at least three orders of magnitude.

The vitality of Nonlinear Optics is evident from the still-growingnumber of scientists and engineers engaged in the study of newnonlinear phenomena and in the development of new nonlinear devices inthe field of opto-electronics. This monograph should be helpful inproviding a historical introduction and a general background of basicideas both for experts specializing in this discipline and forscientists and students who wish to become acquainted with it.

This is the fourth reprint and includes new references to the recentliterature. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Dated but very insightfull
This book is a classic. Bloembergen is one of those physicists that managed to cover a field theoretically a long time before many of the ideas got to be realised. I like this book very much because it starts at the basics (it was truly new at the time so he takes the time to explain things and look at them from various perspectives). The notation and typesetting ar every dated but the story is very clear.

3-0 out of 5 stars Fourth Edition???
This book is well worth the eighteen bucks, but readers should be warned that its description as a "fourth edition" seems to have no justification.Bloembergen states flat-out in his introduction that "no attempt has been made to revise this material dating from 1964."The date of the original edition is given as 1965, and the author states that the only changes have been an epilogue (1 1/2 pages) and a list of more up to date textbooks (half a page). This makes me feel that if I buy any more books from World Scientific, I would want to double check their book descriptions. ... Auszug: Willis Eugene Lamb, Jr. (July 12, 1913 - May 15, 2008) was an American physicist who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1955 together with Polykarp Kusch "for his discoveries concerning the fine structure of the hydrogen spectrum". Lamb and Kusch were able to precisely determine certain electromagnetic properties of the electron (see Lamb shift). Lamb was a professor at the University of Arizona College of Optical Sciences. Lamb was born in Los Angeles, California, United States and attended Los Angeles High School. First admitted in 1930, he received a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1934. For theoretical work on scattering of neutrons by a crystal, guided by J. Robert Oppenheimer, he received the Ph.D. in physics in 1938. Because of limited computational methods available at the time, this research narrowly missed revealing the Mössbauer Effect, 19 years before its recognition by Mössbauer. Lamb was the Wykeham Professor of Physics at the University of Oxford from 1956 to 1962, and also taught at Yale, Columbia, Stanford and the University of Arizona. Lamb married his first wife, Ursula Schaefer in 1939. In 1996 he married physicist Bruria Kaufman, whom he later divorced. In 2...http://booksllc.net/?l=de ... Read more

Nicolaas Bloembergen (born Dordrecht, March 11, 1920) is a Dutch/ American physicist and Nobel laureate. He received his Ph.D. degree from University of Leiden in 1948; while pursuing his PhD at Harvard, Bloembergen also worked part-time as a graduate research assistant for Edward Mills Purcell at the MIT Radiation Laboratory. He became a professor at Harvard University.Bloembergen enrolled in 1938 at the University of Utrecht to study physics. Bloembergen left the war ravaged Netherlands in 1945 to pursue graduate studies at Harvard University. Six weeks before his arrival, Harvard Professor Edward M. Purcell (along with his graduate students Torrey and Pound) discovered nuclear magnetic resonance. Bloembergen was hired to develop a first NMR machine. While at Harvard he enjoyed classes from J. Schwinger, J. H. van Vleck, and E. C. Kemble. His thesis Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation was submitted in Leiden, where he passed qualifying criteria. ... Read more
