Book Description
Already a veteran of Pearl Harbor and the epic battles of Coral Sea and Midway, the heavy cruiser New Orleans races through the velvet black night of 30 November 1942. Only minutes into this, the last of the great surface battles of the Solomons' campaign, New Orleans is struck by a Japanese Long Lance torpedo which explodes its forward magazines, taking away 130 feet of her bow and the lives of 178 of the author's shipmates. In this intensely personal and gripping memoir, a veteran of that gallant ship tells its history from rollicking peacetime days, on through 17 Pacific battles, to the hauling down of its commission pennant and its finally being broken up for scrap.

It is a tale, as horrific as it is poignant, powerfully told. One the young should learn and old remember. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rebuilding the cruiser and the Cityof New Orleans
Tassafaranga, the last sea battle for Guadalcanal, was a sever defeat, all the capatal ships, damaged or sunk; however, the enemy never returned to reinforce their troops. This heroic story is told by a sailor with no agenda, except to tell what he experienced, knowing that he oued his life to the officer who got him into the escape tube, that the officer was unable to pass through. The city of New Orleans, damaged from Katrinka, can recover, if it will follow the example set, and the courage exhibited by its own, the Heavy cruiser, the USS New Orleans. to re-build.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Account of World War II
Hell at Tassafaronga was an excellent account of the war in the Pacific during WWII. The author articulates his personal experience with sincerity and brings the stories to life as you turned the pages that describe battles at Pearl Harbor, Coral Sea and Midway. Having grown-up in Hawaii, the story of Pearl Harbor was especially interesting... especially the sections that described the island, the people and the culture. Especially now (post 9/11/01), it is important to remember where our freedom comes from. And the ultimate sacrifices made by members of our armed services in conflicts such as those described in Hell at Tassafaronga. This is an excellent book and a great reminder of what makes our country great... and the sacrifices we must make to keep it that way. ... Read more

Product Description
From the DJ flap: One of the most fascinating debates on the unity of the Western hemisphere forms the central issue of this book: The question "Does U.S. hisstory have anything in common with that of Brazil, Canada, or Spanish America?" was first emphatically raised by Herbert Eugene Bolton in an address given before the American Historical Association in 1932. Deploring the highly nationalistic presentation of history which dominated American thought, Bolton insisted that the story of any one country in the New World could be fully understood only against the panoramic background of the entire western hemisphere. Bolton's ideas provoked widely diverse reactions, ranging from cautious approval to violent hostility. A selection of representative reactions by Canadian, Latin American, and U.S. historians makes up the body of this book."Other contributors include: Sanford A. Mosk; Ralph E. Turner; Charles C. Griffin; Roy F. Nichols; and German Arciniegas. The book is divided into several sections: Precursors; The Thesis; Reactions to the Controversy; A New Approach: The History of America Program; and The Problem Remains: The Unity and Diversity of American History. ... Book Description
Despite the death of contemporary witnesses for the late Augustan and early Tiberian Principates, Ovid's Fasti has remained curiously neglected as an historical source for the period. The aim of this new research is to show that the poem of some five thousand lines on the Roman calendar, written and revised in the years between AD 4-16, provides students of the Augustan age with a wealth of information, both about the author himself, and about his cultural and political environment. The author discovers important new insights into the way in which Augustus and his family were incorporated into the ancient religion of the city of Rome, and reveals Ovid as a unique contemporary witness of the last decade of Augustus' life and the first years of Tiberius' rule. From his poem the Fasti, Dr Herbert-Brown finds new evidence of the processes which marked the transition from the Republic to Empire. ... Book Description
This ground-breaking book celebrates the bimillennial anniversary of the inception of Ovid's Fasti by offering a variety of approaches to Ovid's poem on the Roman religious calendar. It is edited by Geraldine Herbert-Brown, whose Ovid and the Fasti (OUP, 1994) first highlighted the value of the poem as an important source for the late Augustan and early Tiberian period. The volume does not aim at consensus but brings together experts from around the world without allowing any single prejudice to prevail. It will engage all those interested in the relationship between literature and society during the early Roman Principate. ... Read more
