Product Description
"What Color Is Your Scarf?" depicts life in the 'gay lane' as experienced by a 40-something man discovering himself rather late in life. This entertaining odyssey provides humor, insight and encouragement to those who have either gone through the process of identity discovery or who may be at the beginning of their extraordinary journey.Though not unique, the universality of the author's experiences offers the reader with little or no exposure to this subject the opportunity to gain an understanding of what gay friends, colleagues and family members endured on the road to self-discovery. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Penentrating Book
This is quite a good book that really allows the reader to get behind the author and penetrate the subject matter in a slow, moving way. There are quite a few elements of humor in it, one of which lead to a friend of mine who was walking the streets of NY fall into a manhole while I was reading it on the phone to him (he was o.k.). The book ends with quite an explosive passage that might make many gag, but, for this reader, I swallowed it up.

I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening
I enjoyed reading the book.It was very enlightening and I learned a lot.

5-0 out of 5 stars I identified with the book
"What Color Is Your Scarf?" is by a man who came out late in life, has recognized his frailties and is attempting to make himself better. In the book, Brown tells you how he is attempting to overcome his imperfections. He has a plan and he makes the telling of it interesting.

I see no reason why the wisdom Brown inculcates wouldn't be useful to anyone as a coming-out guidebook.I would recommend it, especially to people just going through the coming-out process, regardless of their age.

5-0 out of 5 stars Loved the book
I related to a lot of things that you mentioned. Thanks for the words.

Product Description
This pathbreaking collection of essays recasts the prevailing conceptions of the historical roots and role of the U.S. Communist Party and its social setting. The contributors focus on the movement that formed around the party and the popular culture it expressed, particularly in the period from 1930 to 1960. They look at the impact of the party and its followers in the areas of education, literature, and the arts, in the African-American community, and on the women's and labor movements. In their preface, the editors place the book in the context of the broader critical examination of the history of the left in the United States. By analyzing the historical reasons for the party's appeal and its relationship to those outside its ranks, the volume contributes to a fuller understanding of the broader societal context within which all oppositional movements are formed.Contributors (in order of appearance in book): Michael E. Brown, Mark Naison, John Gerassi, Stephen Leberstein, Ellen Schrecker, Rosalyn Baxandall, Roger Keeran, Gerald Horne, Annette T. Rubinstein, Marvin E. Gettleman, Alan Wald, and Gil Green (interviewed by Anders Stephanson). ... Read more

WAR IN THE TRIBAL ZONE, the 1991 anthropology of war classic, is back in print with a new Preface by the editors. Their timely and insightful essay examines the occurrence of ethnic conflict and violence in the decade since the idea of the 'tribal zone' originally was formulated. Finding the book's analysis tragically prophetic in identifying the key dynamics that have produced the kinds of conflicts recently witnessed globallyas in Bosnia, Kosovo, Rwanda, and Somaliathe editors consider the political origins and cultural meanings of 'ethnic' violence in our postcolonial world. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Ferguson Shreds
Great book comprised of how state expansion helped initiate, dictate and continue trends of warfare; fostering, in some cases, the creation of tribes and at all times the 'tribal zone'. All the papers presented stem from the 1989 School of American Research advanced seminar on anthropology and warfare. Subjects range from ancient Roman and Sri Lankan state interaction in the tribal zone to Ferguson's more modern take on how western contact had major influence on Yanomami warfare.

The reviewer below must have something out for Ferguson since Fried is referred to many times in the chapter "The Violent Edge of Empire". Fried's idea of the state (expansion/domination) creating the category of 'tribes' and his rejection of the historical category of "Tribe" before state contact is referenced (Whitehead also refers to Fried in his chapter). Pretty bush league review from an anonymous anthropologist. The reviewer is probably upset that Ferguson shredded one of his favorite authors.

excellent book.

5-0 out of 5 stars U.S. Army Soldier
Ferguson has a great analytical mind, and a concise writing style. To dispel a myth, Ferguson does anthropological field research regularly.

2-0 out of 5 stars Remember the classics!
This work should be read as an update on Morton Fried's "The Notion of the Tribe."The authors do not give Fried enough credit but well read anthropologists will recognize that the key points stem from Fried. Read with caution as the two editors have never done long-term fieldwork among indigenous peoples. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Flying Blind: Politics of the US Strategic Bomber Program
Dr. Brown provides outstanding background, analyses, and commentary on all 15 Air Force "heavy" bomber programs, from the B-35 to the B-2. "Flying Blind" provides critical information to readers about theoverall bomber procurement strategy, funding hurdles, and designchallenges. The author reveals "Bomber Command" efforts to usethe lessons learned during WWII bombing campaigns to develop higher andfaster flying airframes with heavier bomb loads, how the Air Force'snuclear commitment led to development of 'strategic' and 'tactical' nucleardelivery systems, and how improved defensive measures forced development ofelectronic jamming, stealth, and other high-performance technologies. Especially interesting is Dr. Brown's discussion of the leaps in untestedengineering technologies as they were incorporated into airframe designs byAir Force leaders and contracted builders, and how concurrent developmentand production systems forced the Air Force to accept faulty weaponssystems.A suitable portion of this book is dedicated to the developmentof the most controversial platform, the B-1 bomber, which happens to be theprime example of bomber technology and procurement run amok. ... Product Description
The authors of this commentary take a canonical-historical approach to the books of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth, three books that are diverse, yet share the common historical context of the tribal settlement of Canaan. They examine Joshua, Judges, and Ruth as narratives with dynamic theological messages about the dynamic relationship between GodÂ’s people and the powerful God who gives land and provides deliverers for the people.

"The three commentaries in this volume will be of great help to laypeople, busy students, and pastors looking for simple, clear expositions of Joshua, Judges, and Ruth. They offer many valuable insights into individual passages as well as the overall messages of these books. The authors are informed biblical scholars who do not clutter their work with technical discussions only distantly related to the text's meaning. Their goal—of clarifying the original meaning of these important (yet often-neglected) books for today's readers-is admirably accomplished."
—David M Howard Jr., professor of Old Testament, Bethel Theological Seminary ... Read more

Product Description
What is happening in the court-house in The Hague, to which Slobodan Milosevic has been brought, intermittently, since 2002? What purposes does the International Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia serve?

'…most of these experts have featured the Tribunal as a 'political court' (Edward Greenspan) and "means of effecting policy" (Christopher Black), an 'instrument of revenge rather than justice' (Jon Holbrook) whose indictments are of a 'purely political nature' (Hans Koechler), at once the 'judicial arm of NATO (Kirsten Sellars) and the 'propaganda arm of NATO' too (Michael Mandel), politics flowing from the purpose, organization, funding and staffing of the Tribunal.' - Edward S. Herman & David Peterson

'…the Tribunal's expenses were supposed to come out of the UN budget, but in fact it has depended on US and other governments' funding, on donations from George Soros and other private donors, with equipment and staff seconded by NATO members. Some $3 million came from the United States in 1994-5, when the US was failing to meets its financial obligations to the United Nations. Gilbert Guillaume, President of the International Court of Justice, complained to the UN General Assembly in October 2000 that the Tribunal got ten times more money than his court and suggested that this was because "various parties create new forums that will be more amenable to their arguments"…' - Michael Barratt Brown ...
