Amazon.com Review
The Vision of Peace: Faith and Hope in Northern Irelandis the first published collection of writings by Mairead CorriganMaguire, winner of the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize. In October 1976 inBelfast, two of Maguire's nephews and one of her nieces, all youngchildren, were run over and killed by the car of an IRA gunman who hadbeen shot by a British Army patrol officer. Maguire, a housewife, channeled her grief and rage by organizing peace demonstrations andmarches that drew more than half a million people in Northern Ireland,England, and the Republic of Ireland. These demonstrations led Maguireto found the Community of Peace People to further the cause ofconstructive non-violence in Northern Ireland.

The Vision of Peace collects two dozen of Maguire's essays andletters, many of which describe the connections between her politicalaction and her faith. Although most of the writing concerns NorthernIreland, essays about the Holocaust, India, East Timor, and Yugoslaviaare also included. Throughout, Maguire urges readers to develop a"politics of mercy and forgiveness," and communicates her belief that

hope for the future depends on each of us takingnon-violence into our hearts and minds and developing new andimaginative structures which are non-violent and life-giving forall.... Some people will argue that this is too idealistic. I believeit is very realistic.... We can rejoice and celebrate today because weare living in a miraculous time. Everything is changing and everythingis possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Peace in a Restless World - a book to cherish in these troubled times
In all spiritual traditions peace is the common element of all prayers, for the yearning for peace is universal. We pray for peace with the world around us, which includes nature, the community, and ourselves.

The authors of this book show us how to apply age-old wisom to our daily practical living. In so doing we rediscover our own natural state of peace and harmony.

This book is one in the "Mananam Series."The series takes its name from the Sanskrit word "mananam,' which translates to "Reflection Upon the Truth."The sections of writings in the book are organized around the following aspects of our universal human search for peace:

Peace
Peaceful Living
Inner Peace
Peacemakers

This is a beautifully produced and well-edited volume that includes illustrations, a chart of pronunciation of Sanskrit words, a section of peace prayers (including some lovely ones from Mahatma Gandhi), and a section with background on all contributing authors.

It would make a lovely gift book, or a book to cherish oneself (perhaps to keep in one's meditation space) as both inspiration and remembrance, as one seeks to navigate the troubled waters of our times with a peaceful heart. ... Read more
