Product Description

Nobel laureate and scientific luminary Enrico Fermi (1901-54) was a pioneering nuclear physicist whose contributions to the field were numerous, profound, and lasting. Best known for his involvement with the Manhattan Project and his work at Los Alamos that led to the first self-sustained nuclear reaction and ultimately to the production of electric power and plutonium for atomic weapons, Fermi's legacy continues to color the character of the sciences at the University of Chicago. During his tenure as professor of physics at the Institute for Nuclear Studies, Fermi attracted an extraordinary scientific faculty and many talented students—ten Nobel Prizes were awarded to faculty or students under his tutelage.

Born out of a symposium held to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of Fermi's birth, Fermi Remembered combines essays and newly commissioned reminiscences with private material from Fermi's research notebooks, correspondence, speech outlines, and teaching to document the profound and enduring significance of Fermi's life and labors. The volume also features extensives archival material—including correspondence between Fermi and biophysicist Leo Szilard and a letter from Harry Truman—with new introductions that provide context for both the history of physics and the academic tradition at the University of Chicago.

Edited by James W. Cronin, a University of Chicago physicist and Nobel laureate himself, Fermi Remembered is a tender tribute to one of the greatest scientists of the twentieth century.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fermi Remembered-A magical time for 20th Century Physics
This book is based on a symposium held at the University of Chicagoto commemorate the 100th anniversary of Enrico Fermi's birth on September 29, 2001.The editor, James Cronin, was principal organizer of the symposium.A distinguished list of speakers was assembled, and written versions of their reports are included in the book. Extensive research in the U of C archives produced many interesting documents, including letters to Fermi and by Fermi, andnotes written in Fermi's hand on a wide range of topics. The results of this archival search are also included in the book.
The decade immediately after World War II was a magical time for physics. The success of the Manhattan Project, Radar, and many other defence applications of physical science attracted much talent to the field. It seemed that almost everyone wanted a PhD in physics, and graduate schools like Chicago were mobbed.Fermi was the center of attention, and the students that he trained, both individually and in classes, went on to illustrious careers.
This book covers many aspects of this exciting time.Space limitations in this review restrict my comments to only a few specifics.Fermi's computer program to calculate charged particle orbits in the cyclotron, written for the Los Alamos Maniac computer, is wonderful. It should be read by every programmer. The review talks by Fermi's colleagues, Richard Garwin, Murray Gell-Mann, and Marvin Goldberger, are not to be missed. The reading public interested in the history of 20th century science, in particular the period 1945-1954 when government support of peacetime research came into being, will find this book full of information not easily obtained elsewhere. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Slick but superficial
The latest edition of State and Local Government: Government By the People, exemplifies what is good-and bad-in most political science textbooks today. Its strengths include a clear writing style , and colorful graphs and illustrations. Every chapter is built around lucidly presented' learning objectives. Then what is wrong with this book?
Sadly, a lot. For one thing, it is much too short and abrupt for a 16 or 17 week course. However, this could beblessing in disguise, as it forces the instructor to be clever. I taught State and Local last year using an edition which had ten chapters. This gave me time to have three movie nights( All Thge Kings Men-1950 version, of course- City Hall and the Great McGinty. and bring in several outside speakers.
However, the latest version is even shorter ( 9 chapters, instead of ten.) Even worse, the omitted material consists of the chapter on, hold on to your hats, FEDERALISM.Leaving federalism out ofa discussion of US politics is absurd. As I have remarked in another place, it is like leaving the Atonement out of atextbook on Christianity or the Four Noble Truths out of a discussion of Buddhism. With all due respect to Messrs. Magleby and Light, this isa well meaning but badly flawed textbook

2-0 out of 5 stars All freakin highlighted!
Well it arrived in good time. Not until I got into class and opened my book to chapter one did I notice the HIGHLIGHTER. Chapter one is completely marked all over in purple and pink highlighter. I am very unhappy I won't be buying from this person again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Class Act
This is a very good book. I would have arranged the chapter topics in a slightly different order, mainly because the teacher's edition does not quite match up with the way the student edition has been arranged. All in all, the material is good, and current.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not to worry---it's fine
Apparently, the Fox Noise machine has cranked out a lot of negative reviews on Burns here. But ignore all that. The book is fine and well-balanced.Burns has long been a first-rate historian and political scientist and there's no reason to doubt that now.The negative reviews are from the Karl Rove crowd.

1-0 out of 5 stars Governmet? HA!
I absolutely hated this book, it gave little factual information on the srtucture and founding of our government. The book also had an enormous left wing bias which is definately inappropriate for a college class. Instructors please find another textbook that is more interesting and deals with function and structure of government {if you want your students to read it ;) }

HORRIBLE BOOK!

1-0 out of 5 stars gooses review
The best features of this book include the charts which appear to have been all polled in new york state or california due to the leftist bias which makes me question the accuracy of any of the statistics. The thing that I liked least was the books negative attitude toward third parties which it attempted to emphasize as spoilers in political races.Besides that the side stories were interesting but of completely no use in showing how government works. The chapters were long and very repetative stating information several times as if it was new even though it had been explained several times before. The same examples were also used in many cases to explain different things. If you have a class with this book there is no point in reading the whole book.If you know nothing about political science you should read up to the last 4 chapters which are on rights and civil liberties this part is just common sense and can be largely opinionated.

1-0 out of 5 stars I noticed a definite left tilt as well.
After having spent a semester taking a class requiring this book, I definitely noticed a rather liberal-leaning bias throughout most of the text. One of the obligations of national government, as stated by the text, is its "matter of fact" attitude that more wealthy individuals owe it to "impoverised" people through literally "taking money from more wealthy states" and giving it to poor states.Give me a break, there is so much socialism and liberal drivel in this book it made reading it a headache.

Profs and teachers, PLEASE find something a little more objective than this textbook.Sheesh!!!

1-0 out of 5 stars Leftist propaganda not science
This book presents the issues in a twisted manner, and never teaches fundamental values. It does not discuss at all the Declaration of Independence, does not give nearly enough historical background and generally mystifies the foundations of American politics. The meaning and value of the Electoral College is not explained nor compared to the structure of the Senate and House. Well if that was mentioned it would tell too much. Instead you get the usual leftist posturing, "uh - it's so complicated - let us fix it for you". The misery of this book is most evident in the discussion of the First Amendment - it is declared contradictory. Of course their interpretation is contradictory but this is what they like, so this is what you get. Once a conflict is introduced, the familiar soap opera style takes over. If you are not into MTV this book is not for you. BTW, editions galore and the price is definitely not "for the poor". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars for a text book its pretty good
I guess it all depends on your teacher but this is a good text book. I had the class once a week sow e where expected to read a chapter a week and then be able to discuss it. Don't try to read the chapters last minut because they are kind of long and take more then an hour to readbut you can skim them and understand them easily. I liked this book but like I said it all depends on your teacher. My teacher told us to get the workbook and I was the only idiot who did but that can help a little but this is just a basic goverment text book for a introduction class so much of the stuff is common knowledge ...
