Il y eut pour maître Antonio Segni, dont il fut ensuite l'assistant jusqu'en 1932. L'obtention de la libera docenza (agrégation) en 1932 à l''université de Camerino, dans les Marches, fut le point de départ de sa carrière universitaire, qui le conduisit à enseigner à la faculté de droit de Macerata, Padoue, Gênes et Rome (dont il fut en outre doyen de 1971 à 1975). En 1939, il épousa Laura Boschian, assistante à la chaire de littérature russe à Trieste, de qui il eut deux fils, Filippo et Gino (le premier suivra les traces de son père, optant pour le droit administratif et constitutionnel). La narrativadella Deledda si basa su forti vicende d'amore, di dolore e di morte sulle quali aleggia il senso del peccato, della colpa, e la coscienza di una inevitabile fatalità. È stata ipotizzata una somiglianza con il verismo di Giovanni Verga ma, a volte, anche con il decadentismodi Gabriele D'Annunzio, oltre alla scrittura di Lev Nikolaevic Tolstoj e di Honoré de Balzac di cui tra l'altro la Deledda tradusse in italiano l'Eugenia Grandet. Tuttavia la Deledda esprime una scrittura personale che affonda le sue radici nella conoscenza della cultura e della tradizione sarda, in particolare della Barbagia.
