Excerpt:Angela Bianchini Angela Bianchini is an Italian fiction writer and literary critic of Jewish descent. She grew up there and emigrated to the United States in 1941, after Mussolini's openly anti-Semitic racial laws were enacted. Education and early career She spent her "years in waiting" (to use Giovanni Macchia's expression) at Johns Hopkins University where she completed a Ph.D. in French Linguistics under the guidance and supervision of Leo Spitzer. The presence and lectures of a group of Spanish exiles (among whom Pedro Salinas and Jorge Guillén ) determined some of her major interests in the field of Spanish literature: in particular the great 20th century poetry and 19th century novel. After her return to Rome after the war, Angela Bianchini was attracted to the world of communication and collaborated not only with such prestigious periodicals as Il mondo di Pannunzio , but also with RAI (the Italian Broadcasting Corporation). For RAI she wrote several cultural broadcasts, radio plays and original radio and T.V. programs. She has many literary studies to her credit. She was one of the first literary critics to study serial novels in La luce a gas e il feuilleton: due invenzioni dell'Ottocento (Liguori, 1969, reprinted in 1989). Product Description

Grazia Deledda Born in Nuoro, into a bourgeois family, September 27, 1871. She was a Italian writer whose works won her the Nobel Prize for Literature for 1926. She died in Romeat the age of 64, August 15, 1936.
Deledda's whole work is based on strong facts of love, pain and death upon which rests the feeling of sin and of an inevitable fatality.
In her works we can recognize the influence of the verism of Giovanni Verga and, sometimes, also that of the decadentism by Gabriele D'Annunzio.
In Deledda's novels there is always a strong connection between places and people, feelings and environment. Her work has been highly regarded by Luigi Capuana and Giovanni Verga. The environment depicted is that one harsh of native Sardinia, but it is not depicted according to regional veristic schemes neither according to the otherworldly vision by D'Annunzio, but relived through the myth.
In the book, a biography of the author. ... Read more

Product Description

Editorial Review

Product Description
1928. The Mother is an unusual book, both in its story and its setting in a remote Sardinian hill village, half civilized and superstitious. But the chief interest lies in the psychological study of the two chief characters, and the action of the story takes place so rapidly (all within the space of two days) and the actual drama is so interwoven with the mental conflict, and all so forced by circumstances, that it is almost Greek in its simple and inevitable tragedy. The book is written without offense to any creed or opinions, and touches on no questions of either doctrine or Church government. It is jut a human problem, the result of primitive human nature against man-made laws it cannot understand. ... Read more
