4-0 out of 5 stars A Serious Introduction to Genes
I was looking for a good introductory type book into Genes and Biotech and I think I found one. This book starts from Cell and explanis DNA RNA all that good stuff with nice tecnical drawings showing the growth, partitions, mutations etc. It is written for educational purposes so it is not popular science type that all in words, it is serious but you do not have to be a med student to understand this. A good bilogy background and serious reading will do.Book continues with other subjects related to genes and DNA. I particularly liked the sections about Brain, the machinery and the design of it. it is a perfect book about DNA and Genes and life. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Book Description
Frontiers of Life addresses fields of biology in terms of their frontiers--that is, the areas that will demand the most work in this new century. Because of their standing, the editors have been able to unite the most prestigious and well-informed authorities to place recent scientific advances into the context of their effects on daily human experiences and expectations. They ask, "What frontiers of the biological sciences will constitute the challenges of the next century?" Their first answer is an understanding of the processes and mechanisms that led to the origin of life. They take this answer as the starting point of the first section of the Encyclopedia. They thus proceed throughout the four volumes.
Separating this Encyclopedia form others is its multidisciplinary approach to the "frontiers" theme. While other encyclopedias strive to describe the past and present states of many subjects, Frontiers of Life offers the insights of world-class scientists into their subjects' growth areas.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best micro/immunology text around
I used the third edition in grad school, my husband used the second.I've been an immunologist for over 20 years, and faculty at a medical school for 10.The immunology section in this book is the best description of humoral immunity and antibody structure bar-none. In fact, for my grad school PhD qualifying exams (comprehensive exams) in medical microbiology at Stanford, I merely read Davis, Dulbecco from cover to cover a few times- and passed with flying colors.I'm using the 4th edition for the immunology class I teach.

5-0 out of 5 stars the best microbiology reference book
This book is quite useful for either students or researchers because of the clearity, information depending on previous practices, so that everybody that interested in microbes worldshould have this book as soonas possible... ... Read more
