The purpose of the course was to give an overview of the physics of artificial semiconductor structures confining electrons and photons. The study of the light - matter interaction in this kind of systems is relevant both to fundamental Solid State Physics and to related fields like Quantum Optics. Furthermore, it furnishes the background for several applications in particular in the domain of optical devices, lasers, light emitting diodes or photonic crystals. In recent years the research in this field has focused on the electronic and optical properties of confined semiconductor structures like Quantum Wells, Quantum Wires, Quantum Dots and semiconductor microcavities. In this context, several exciting effects have been observed. In particular, we mention the effects related to the microcavity polaritons, which are mixed electromagnetic radiation-exciton states inside a semiconductor microcavity. The study of the characteristics of such states, besides a wide interest by itself, shows strong relations with the domain of cavity quantum electrodynamics and thus with the investigation of some fundamental theoretical concepts. Also topics like the exciton localization due to disorder or the coherent control of optical pulses emitted by confined structures belong to the subjects, which are considered in the domain of semiconductor confined structures. The emission characteristics of low-dimensional systems like Quantum Wells, Quantum Wires and Quantum Dots are of enormous importance for the development of new types of semiconductor lasers and light emitting diodes. ... During the last ten years Quantum Information Processing and Communication (QIPC) has established itself as one of the new hot topic fields in physics, with the potential to revolutionize many areas of science and technology. QIPC replaces the laws of classical physics applied to computation and communication with the more fundamental laws of quantum mechanics. This becomes increasingly important due to technological progress going down to smaller and smaller scales where quantum effects start to be dominant. In addition to its fundamental nature, QIPC promises to advance computing power beyond the capabilities of any classical computer, to guarantee secure communication and establish direct links to emerging quantum technologies, such as, for example, quantum based sensors and clocks. The role of exact sciences in connection with cultural heritage now is well established and a new scientific branch has been generated: Archaeometry. Literally, Archaeometry means measurement on ancient objects. It is a multidisciplinary field of Investigations where the rigorous methods of exact sciences give a fundamental contribution to solving the problems associated with conservation and restoration, as well as to the study itself of the cultural heritage. Archaeometry, as a scientific research field, involves interdisciplinary groups formed by scholars of the humanistic area together with scientists: physicists, chemists, mathematicians, biologists, engineers, etc. The primary justification for the need of involving exact sciences in the field which, in the past, traditionally has been exclusive of Art Historians must no doubt be found in the conservation and restoration activities. The second argument which, in the public opinion, justifies the involvement of science with the world of Art is the confidence that scientific methods are Infallible in unmasking forgeries. But in our opinion the awareness of the central role of scientific methods as a support for philological and historical investigations is still very little diffuse or, at least, finds it hard to become widespread. Perhaps also because of our mentality, Physics, compared to chemistry, is more apt to find applications in a context free from authentication or conservation implications.

It has been noticed that the existence of dark matter is yet another displacement of humans from the centre of the Universe: not only do our planet and our sun have no central position in the Universe, not only are humans just animals (although with a 'specialized' central nervous system), but even the material of which we are made is only a marginal component of the cosmic substance! If this is the right attitude to take, scientists feeling distaste for dark matter are much like Galileo Galilei's colleagues who refused to look through the telescope to watch the Medicei planets. Nevertheless, astronomers, when required to take a ballot in favour of some cosmological model, often still vote for 'pure baryonic' with substantial majorities, although most cosmologists assume that a 'cold' component of dark matter plays a role in producing the world as we observe it.
