Samuel Adams: Radical Puritan recounts the major events in it's subject'slife, but doesn't leave you with a feeling about the essence of the man.Sam Adams does not speak for himself enough via quotes from his ownwritings.The coverage of the Sons of Liberty is reduced to 13 superficialpages.It does provide a glimpse of an old revolutionary not changing withthe times after the war has been won.But it is not the full colorportrait of a life like thatVan Doren has provided for Benjamin Franklin. ... Very interesting and practical
I used the concepts in this book for all three of my children, and greatly enjoyed it. Playing with my kids and "floor time" is not my forte as a parent, so the ideas in here for how to cultivate language and how to set up the collections of toys and objects for playing with my children were very helpful.

As far as results, I do not have a large enough sample to really study, but my children are all quite verbal. I don't know if this helped, but it was interesting and if you have a child with language delays, I would strongly recommend it. ... Read more

One of the most useful software development books I've read
I bought this book in 2004 and have read most of it multiple times.This is not a how to write code book, it's a how to write and rewrite code well book.

Frankly, the reason I bought this book was because Kent Beck was a co-author.His book "Smalltalk Best Practice Patterns" is a classic, even though it is tough to read.Beck knows software development from practical experience, not only theoretical concepts.

I've been programming for 35 years, and this book reaffirmed what I had learned from working on many projects, writing many tens of thousands lines of code, and maintaining millions of lines of code.Write tiny methods.Each method should do one thing and do it well.Avoid duplicate code for many reasons.

I practice the principles in this book everyday.If you understand and practice them too, you will be a better software developer.

Still relevant today !!
This book should be treated as a classic in software craftmanship, and its contents are still relevant today as they were in 1999.

Essential reading
A great book that uses clean code examples to illustrate powerful concepts. It is good at showing critical OOP concepts as well as refactoring techniques for cleaning up code. Reading this will most likely make you a better programmer.

Good resource for teaching
What is better? Replacing delegations with inheritance or replacing inheritance with delegation?

The answer is the ultimate answer to most software engineering decisions: DEPENDS, there is always a trade-off that has to be analyzed according to the context! This book addresses those trade-offs very well.

Mostly good information
This is a large physically attractive book with beautiful full color pictures on thick slick paper.It has a wealth of good information and lots of misinformation.For example, we are told that the Webley was the first top break revolver.A picture of a Webley Pryse revolver with the typical Pryse latch is described as a Webley Mark VI government model.

In the handgun section the countries are presented in a haphazard order.It begins with Canada, where there are pictures and descriptions of 26 Para-Ordinance pistols, all 1911 clones.However, in the United States section not a single one of the firms making 1911 clones (Kimber, Springfield, etc.) are referred to.

In the U.S. section we are also presented with 30 Taurus handguns, but only 22 Colts and 16 Smith and Wesson models.Strange.

Additionally, we are told that the Steyr Hahn 1911 was adopted toward the end of World War One, the FN Browning 1903 became standard issue for the U.S. forces, the model 1915 Beretta could use the .38 Colt Automatic cartridge (boom), the Norwegian model 1893 Nagant revolver was a variation of the Russian Nagant and manufactured in the Tula Arsenal, etc., etc.

On the good side, this is a beautiful book, and most of the information is correct.
