Product Description
When Ragnar Granit was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (with Wald and Hartline) in 1967, his scientific peer, Sir John C. Eccles, wrote that "He was awarded this prize for his work on the electroretinogram, but it should be recognized that, in fact, he has made contributtions of the highest level in two rather dissimilar fields of neurophysiology; with equal fitness he could have been awarded the Prize for his work on the control of movement. His investigations of the electroretinogram were virtually completed with the publication in 1974 of his classic book, Sensory Mechanisms of the Retina. From that time he has been in the forefront of investigators on the control movement, and his laboratory at Stockholm has led the world in what we may term the synthetic mechanisms controlling the discharges of motoneurones to muscle."In this book, Granit explains and integrates these two major brain systems-the physiology of vision and the control of motor activity. Visual perception is seen as an input system, motor control as an output system, with the goal-oriented brain mediating between. Reaching beyond the strict confines of neurophysiology, th author relates his investigationto the concerns of psychology, evolutionary biology, and the general organism-environment interrelationship. He also gauges the level of science's current understanding of how the brain works and the limits within which it might be improved. The book is meant for readers with more than passing interest in the deeper issues of biology, the general question of purpose in life, and the specific question of the purposiveness, the goal-directed nature, of the crowning organ of the higher forms of life. However, no special knowledge of neurophysiology is assumed. ... Read more

Excerpt: Ragnar Arthur Granit (October 30, 1900, Vantaa, Finland March 12, 1991, Stockholm, Sweden) was a Finnish/Swedish scientist who won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1967 along with Haldan Keffer Hartline and George Wald. Granit graduated in 1927 from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Helsinki, Finland. When Finland became the target of a massive Soviet attack in 1940 during the Winter War (1939 - 1940), Granit sought refuge - and peaceful surroundings for his studies and research work - in the neighbouring capital of Sweden, Stockholm, at the age of 40. In the same year, 1940, Granit also received Swedish citizenship, which made it possible for him to go on with his work and live without having to worry about the war, which lasted until 1945 in Finland. Granit kept his Finnish citizenship as well, and he remained a patriotic Finn throughout his life. After the Finnish-Russian Wars, Granit kept homes both in Finland and Sweden. Granit was professor of neurophysiology at the Karolinska Institutet from 1946 to his retirement in 1967. Granit said that his Nobel prize "belongs fifty-fifty to Finland and Sweden". ...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=644063 ... Read more

Excerpt: Friherre Jöns Jacob Berzelius (20 August 1779 7 August 1848) was a Swedish chemist. He worked out the modern technique of chemical formula notation, and is together with John Dalton, Antoine Lavoisier, and Robert Boyle considered a father of modern chemistry. He began his career as a physician but his researches in physical chemistry were of lasting significance in the development of the subject. He achieved much in later life as secretary of the Swedish Academy. He is known in Sweden as the Father of Swedish Chemistry. Berzelius was born at Väversunda in Östergötland in Sweden. He lost both his parents at an early age. He was taken care of by relatives in Linköping where he attended the school today known as Katedralskolan. Thereafter he enrolled at the Uppsala University where he learned the profession of medical doctor from 1796 to 1801. He was taught chemistry by Anders Gustaf Ekeberg, the discoverer of tantalum. He worked as apprentice in a pharmacy and with a physician in the Medevi mineral springs. During this time he conducted analysis of the spring water. For his medical studies he examined the influence of galvanic current on several diseases and graduated as M.D. in 1802. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher's book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: Martti Oiva Kalevi Ahtisaari (pronounced ) (born 23 June 1937) is a Finnish politician, former President of Finland (1994-2000), 2008 Nobel Peace Prize laureate and United Nations diplomat and mediator, noted for his international peace work. Ahtisaari was a UN Special Envoy at the Kosovo status process negotiations, aimed at resolving a long-running dispute in Kosovo, which declared its independence from Serbia in 2008. In October 2008, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for his efforts on several continents and over more than three decades, to resolve international conflicts". The Nobel statement said that Ahtisaari has played a prominent role in resolving many conflicts in Namibia, Indonesia, Kosovo and Iraq, among other areas. Martti Ahtisaari was born in Viipuri, Finland (now Vyborg, Russia). His father, Oiva Ahtisaari (whose grandfather Julius Marenius Adolfsen had emigrated with his parents to Finland in 1872 from Tistedalen in southern Norway) took Finnish citizenship in 1929 and changed his surname from Adolfsen in 1937. The Continuation War (World War II) took Martti's father to the Eastern Front as a non-commissioned officer army mechanic, while his mother, Tyyne, moved to Kuopio with her son to escape immediate danger from the war. Kuopio was where Ahtisaari spent most of his childhood and first attended school "Kuopion Lyseo". In 1952, Martti Ahtisaari moved to Oulu with his family to seek employment. There he continued his education in a well-known high school "Oulun Lyseo" (among its former students are two other presidents of Finland: Kaarlo Juho Ståhlberg and Kyösti Kallio) and graduated in 1952.
