Product Description
TEXT BOOK MOLECULAR SPECTRA and MOLECULAR STRUCTURE I. SPECTRA OF DIATOMIC MOLECULES by GERHARD HERZBERG. Originally published in 1939.PREFACE: Eleven years ago I published a volume entitled Molecular Spectra and Molecular Structure I. Diatomic Molecules which was followed in 1945 by a second volume Infrared and Raman Spectra of Polyatomic Molecules. The first volume has been out of print for a number of years but the demand for it seemed to justify a new edition. Although the book has been completely revised and brought up to date, its general plan has remained substantially unchanged. Concerning this plan it seems therefore appropriate to quote from the preface of the first edition I have endeavored to give a presentation which is readable by the beginner in the field and also will be useful to those who do or want to do research work in this field. In order to assist the former, I have frequently made use of small type for those sections that are not necessary for an understanding of the fundamentals. For the benefit of those working in the field, numerous references to original papers have been included. A satisfactory presentation of molecular spectra and molecular structure is nowadays not possible without treating thoroughly, apart from the empirical results, the theoretical background also. Therefore I have included as much of the theory of molecular spectra as is possible without going into the more difficult mathematical details. A large number of diagrams, graphical repre sentations of eigenfunctions and potential curves, as well as energy level dia grams, serve to illustrate and to explain the theory. On the other hand, I have added numerous carefully selected spectrograms of bands and band systems some of which have been taken specially for this purpose in order to give an accurate idea of tho experimental material that forms the basis of the developments. While of course most of the material presented is not new, it seems that the actual procedure followed in analyzing a band spectrum has not previously been given as specifically in a book of this kind. The same holds for the ap plications of band spectra to other parts of physics, to chemistry, and to astro physics given in the last chapter. I hope that both these features will be found useful. In the eleven years since the publication of the first edition the subject Spectra of Diatomic Molecules has developed vigorously even though not as rapidly as in the preceding two decades. Most of the progress made has been consolidation and slow evolution rather than revolution. Exceptions to this statement are the amazing advances made by applying the new tools of molecular beams and microwaves to diatomic molecular problems. Naturally I have incorporated these advances of recent years in the present new edition... ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Old but not out of date
Please note that this review is based upon the paperback Dover edition of this book (the second edition published in 1944) that I have had for many years, not the photocopied version listed here.As such, there was no problem with the clarity of the text or other features that may be deficient in the photocopied version. Thus, a prospective reader is advised, if possible, to seek out a used Dover edition.

An immediate question comes to mind when considering this book - why should one spend time with a physics book that was written in 1933?I like this book because I think that it still holds up because the structure data that it explains is still valid. When this book was written the problem of explaining spectra lines was at the cutting edge of physics and the solution to this problem lay in the newly developed field of quantum mechanics.Today, the problem of spectra lines has largely been superceded by other quantum mechanics problems and the analysis of spectra lines is relegated to a few introductory lines in textbooks or to specialist literature. This book treats the subject as it was in 1933 - the vehicle to understanding how quantum mechanics explains the nature or the electronic structure of an atom. The book is based upon the Bohr atom and explains the origin of the Balmer lines and gives a clear description and explanation of the Zeeman and Stark effects (at least in terms of 1933 QM).The discussions are clear and provide a somewhat more physical interpretation of electronic energy levels than those of more abstract modern theories. It provides a great introduction to atomic spectra and is a great adjunct to more modern approaches.

I recommend this book to those who want to understand the origins of quantum mechanics and the origin of spectra lines. While the Bohr atom is largely obsolete, it does provide a physical picture that I find helpful in understanding the nature of the electron energy levels.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great text, but the copy is poor
Unfortunately, unless you can get ahold of an older, unmarked copy, you may be disappointed by the "new" book sold through Amazon.Spectra are cut off, along with the legends. The pages look like they were photocopied, poorly, in some cases and the text on several pages is blackened by photocopied handwriting within the book.Strange, as Dover is typically very conscientious.I found another older copy and must say, I really do enjoy this book.It reads well and Herzberg describes many aspects of atomic spectroscopy and how structure is related quite brilliantly.I can highly recommend the book, but not this particular printing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Atomic Spectra And Atomic Structure
It is a very good book but the pages are not so good because are copies, anyway is not difficult to read.

4-0 out of 5 stars The best book for introductory Atomic Spectra!
Updated classic paperback text that covers a broad area from Balmer series to Nuclear Spin. Written without alot of complex mathematics, thisis a good introduction to Atomic Spectra for specialists in other fields. I loved the coverage on quantum numbers and alkaline-earth elements. ... Read more

This book is basic to the study of every discipline that depends upon spectroscopy, not so much for the rather good fundamental handling of theory, there are many good books on the subject. My favorite aspect of the book is throughtout its pages and especially its Table 39, rich with experimental results, contains references to seminal works in the field, the starting points of the study of a vast array of subjects in the basic sciences and a singular reference of my work in the study of diatomics.

Product Description
Gerhard Herzberg (1904-1999), winner of the 1971 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, is considered the founder of molecular spectroscopy. Born and educated in Germany, he started his seven decades of research just as the discovery of quantum mechanics began unraveling the mysteries of the microscopic world. He chose to study spectroscopy, the light emitted and absorbed by atoms and molecules, eventually moving to Canada where he established the spectroscopy laboratory for the National Research Council. His Ottawa laboratory became a mecca for generations of young scientists from around the world. There, Herzberg systematized the knowledge of the field in the classic trilogy Molecular Spectra and Molecular Structure, Atomic Spectra, and Atomic Structure. In awarding the Nobel Prize, the Swedish Academy said, "It's quite exceptional in the field of science that a single individual, however distinguished, can be a leader of a whole area of research of general importance." ... Product Description
In contrast to diatomic molecules, the spectroscopic study of polyatomic molecules was for a long time carried out principally by work in the infrared region and by the study of the Raman effect. However, the considerable improvement in vacuum ultraviolet techniques and the development for the study of free radicals have made possible a rapid development of the study of electronic spectra. The object of this book is to present the results of this new development without neglecting the significant older work on the subject. ... Read more

Aus Wikipedia. Nicht dargestellt. Auszug: Gerhard Herzberg, PC, CC, FRSC, FRS (December 25, 1904 - March 3, 1999) was a pioneering physicist and physical chemist, who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1971. Born in Germany, he fled to Canada in 1935, where he continued his distinguished scientific career. Herzberg's main work concerned atomic and molecular spectroscopy. He is well known for using these techniques that determine the structures of diatomic and polyatomic molecules, including free radicals which are difficult to investigate in any other way, and for the chemical analysis of astronomical objects. Herzberg served as Chancellor of Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada from 1973 to 1980. Herzberg was honoured with memberships or fellowships by a very large number of scientific societies, received many awards and honorary degrees in different countries. The NSERC Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering, Canada's highest research award, was named in his honour in 2000. The Canadian Association of Physicists also has an annual award named in his honour. The Herzberg Institute of Astrophysics is named for him. He was made a member of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science. Asteroid 3316 Herzberg is named after him. In 1964 he was awarded the Frederic Ives Medal by the OSA. The main building of John Abbott College in Montreal is named after him. A public park in the College Park neighbourhood of Saskatoon also bears his name.
